Thank you Ditter for this info...I often wondered about people who did that. I always stand mind on it's side closed if I'm leaving it unattended at all and I don't put mine down on the bedding ever and now would never think of it thank to you...

The 'nerds' (computer-savvy persons) tell us that laptops are now supposed to be called 'notebooks' and say that they should never be used on soft surfaces because blocking the vents may well ruin the computer. I did not know this until reading Ditter43's warning and checking Snopes.com. Thanks, Ditter.

Apparently faulty batteries are more likely to cause computer fires (HP has done recalls because of this).

all computers need air circulation. i always wonder about t.v.'s placed over fire places that don't have a mantle to deflect the heat away a bit. just asking for trouble.

My newer laptop doesn't get very hot, I use it on my lap. The vent is on the side which makes much better sense. My cat loves the warm air blowing out so is always by my side when I'm using it. My old desk tower was taken apart to clean and the guy was shocked that very little dust was inside and it sits about an inch off the floor.
