More babies are born at the full moon. Also, in astrology, if the person's chart shows the moon is square to the sun, the parents were not getting along when child was conceived. Ring around the moon means rain. Work begun at new moon will be more prosperous. Work begun at full moon will always struggle to survive.

The stripe on woolly caterpillar in the fall tells of the winter temps... the thicker the stripe the colder the winter.

An itchy nose means you'll have a fight.

Spit on a bite to stop the itch.
what if the moon squared ALL the planets bunched up on top one another?

If a ladybug lands on you, good luck is coming your way.

My favorite one is, what you do to your parents, your children will be ten times worse.

Those are good.

This means that the amniotic sac doesn't break during the birth and the head is born still covered in the membrane. It doesn't happen very often even in natural births. It almost never happens in the hospital because the 'water' is so often broken artificially. Some say that a child born this way may have special intuitive powers, be destined to be a midwife, have extraordinary luck or never die by drowning.

My second son was born this way - and I think he has been very lucky in his life. I always tell people he is the kind of person who would fall into a bucket of doo-doo and come out smelling like a rose.

Once he was in a car accident (he was the driver) all the 4 other kids in the car were taken to hospital (nothing serious) and he was left on the side of the road without a scratch. There were no police charges either - and he was clearly in the wrong. I dont know how he got away with that one.

He has been very lucky in lots of things. Now if he could just win lotto so his mum could retire. :-D
I've heard this too....from memory in the old days didn't they save it as a talisman or something? Anyway, wish my second son was like yours.....one thing after another with my young fella....I could do with winning lotto, just to pay for the therapy I'll need to get through his and my life with some shred of sanity:)
I didnt say it was all smooth sailing earthwalker, there were times when I could have strangled him with my bare hands  but he has come good in the last 2 years and now he has found a good girl as well. But for 27 years, if there was trouble, he would find it.

Sailors used it as a lucky charm when they were at sea.

I can just picture this!!LOL!

speaking of superstitions, everyone knows about the wishbone and making a wish. How many grew up calling it a "pully bone"? I had a friend down south who called it that.
I grew up calling it a pulley bone and all the kids wanted it When two pulled the one with the longest piece their wish would come true.

was raised by superstitions:

don't put a hat on the bed, bad luck,
don't pass anyone one the stairs, bad luck,
don't sing at the table, bad luck ( some how birthdays were excluded)

spill salt, sprikle a few grains over left shoulder to keep away evil spirits

if you drop a "T towel" a towel you dry dishes, you will get company

if your left hand itches, money is coming your way.

who knows who what when and where from my family.. as I grew up and had children of my own.. I really tried not to pass this intense life style.. hah!

I always worried I was effecting my LUCK all along life's path until I really understood: History 101 or such.. German's used superstition to teach their children manors.. made sense to me.. except for the salt on the floor.
nice thread !

Same thing with fore runners if you heard 3 knocks on your door, and I remember that happening, mom would go to the door and no one was there. Then she got a call her brother passed away.
-----------------------------------------
Back in WV in Mom's Field family, this had to happen 3 times. Three times you heard the 3 knocks at the door, opened it with no one there, so you start phoning family to tell them you loved them. One of my WV uncles was visiting family in Ohio and this happened, he got in the car and immediately went home with his sister's love to all, got there just in time to tell his Dad, my grandfather, goodbye.

Left palm itching, money coming to fill it up.

A whistling girl and a crowing hen, both come to no good end.

Strangers with 3 piece suits and hats would do horrible things to little girls, so my cousins and I, on spotting such people, were supposed to run tell our uncles. Took WAY too many years for it to sink in on me that our uncles were the bib overall with flannel shirts and heavy work boot types, and the only ones with 3 piece suits walking over the hills were the dreaded Revenuers!!!! For way too many years I even had knee jerk reactions to my own DH when he had to go to meetings dressed in suit and tie!!
