I was checking my son Jacob's social studies homework and found out there is another ocean-instead of the 4 I learned about in school now there's 5-the Southern Ocean. How do you just create another ocean?!

I'm curious..what's the 4 you learnt? Indian, Atlantic, Pacific and ? (my memory must be failing me..lol). I've always known of the Southern Ocean..maybe because we lived right on it..lol

Here's a site of them all and a few facts.

(You're missing the Artic from the list.)

I think it's a plot to force the schools to buy new books--LOL! BTW--Wouldn't it make more sense to name their new ocean Antarctic Ocean or change the name of the Arctic Ocean to Northern Ocean? Obviously this society needs more work to do if they have to add another ocean and then give it a name that doesn't really relate to any of the others. Maybe that's what their next big announcement will be.

I learned about Artic, Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans. The Southern Ocean is news to me-I'm a little slow on the uptake apparently-I googled it and it was named in 2000.
