NY- Rome, Oneida or Utica

My son accepted a job in Rome NY. Anyone in that area who can suggest the best place for a single 23 year old, just out of college to move to? I first thought Oneida to be close to Syracuse thinking he might like to be near a University and their events, but Utica looks like a nice place to live. Any advise out there? I sure could use it!
