I know we have quilters in New Zealand, but not sure if any in Christchurch. Please keep them in your prayers after the earthquake happened. If you are there, let us know how you are doing!

Thank you for posting this, Dix. They've been in my own prayers. I have heard no more about this event and hope all are okay. The quilting magazines from that part of the world are awesome, amazing quilters "down under". Does anyone know if earthquakes are usual in that part of the globe?

I have a nurse from New Zealand that I see about twice a week. We are quite friendly and she talks about home often. She has never said anything about earth quakes. I will most likely see her Monday, I will ask her about it. Yes my prayers are on their way!

Fox just now said that the first quake was a 7.4 and now an aftershock was 7.1.

This article says NZ gets 15,000 earthquakes a year!
This particular one was a doozy. So sad. Prayers out to those affected.

Let's hope the damage is small. We get a lot of earthquakes here in California. Not fun.

Our latest news bulletin said so far, no deaths, and only two major casualties, but lots of damage to infrastructure. I have friends who live inland from Christchurch, and no reply from them yet, but perhaps power or communications are out.

Blue Chicken said that the airport is closed too.

Yep! I found out about the frequency of earthquakes in NZ after our DD and DSIL moved there last year and there was one. Didn't make me a very happy camper. From what I know New Zealand's North Island contains a number of active and potentially active volcanoes. Apparently no active volcanos on the south island, but I think that due to the islands being shaped by volcanos, the area has frequent earthquakes.

I've been following the news of the earthquake from here in Australia and we are all very concerned about the welfare of our friends and relatives across the Tasman Sea in Christchurch. There has been a lot of damage but no loss of life, fortunately.

Anyone who wants a local view of events can check out the newspaper at http://nzherald.co.nz
