Default Parachute jump from space

Please .. if you didn't get to watch it this weekend -- please go to www.redbullstratos.com and watch the incredible video of this young man's "sky dive" from 23 miles above the earth. i watched live - with my heart in my throat - and remembered back to watching all the marvels of the space program as a kid. This type of thing has only been done once before - from 19 miles up - in the '60s as part of the NASA space program. There are more articles out there today -- but watching it happen was WOW ... AMAZING !!!

I haven't seen it but, I think the guy needs a better hobby and/or a better way of getting attention.

He is a dare-devil - true - but they were collecting a lot of scientic data -- as it has long been under consideration by NASA as a potential way of saving a flight crew in a crippled spacecraft - ie: low orbit/upper atmosphere free fall / individual parachute landing.

Why? I always wonder why the daredevils feel the need to do stunts. I wonder about the pod he jumped out of, does that end up as space junk or is it going to fall back to earth?

Why NOT?? As OP posted - they collected some valuable data that could come in use in the future. As for the pod, it landed and they will collect data from that as well.

I was glued to it live. When I saw him standing on the edge of the pod about to jump ... I held my breath, and I don't think I exhaled until he flattened out his spin. It was simply amazing and incredibly brave.
