The original topic got removed for some reason, so I'm here to start it up again.
I love showing off my babies and seeing all the others too. Our non-human friends can be blessings in our lives and I'm thankful to have (or had) them in my life.

First I'll introduce my sister and I's "only child". Her name is Emily and she is a "red" Doberman with natural (uncropped) ears. She is really camera shy, so I don't have much to pick from.

We got her after we lost our Penny, another red Doberman who left a large hole in our hearts despite still having two other dogs. Emily is SO different! When we picked her up from Dogworks, who does Doberman and Greyhound rescue, she was quite the scared cutie. She has improved quite a bit, but still doesn't like to walk on linoleum. It's quite funny, actually.

Like most if not all dogs, she loves to stick her head out the window as I drive. Since I have a two door 1990 Geo Metro, and only the drivers side window rolls up or down, that's the one that gets chosen. We have worked out where her legs and my arm goes so that driving is very easy, and she goes back when I ask her to so I can look to the left.

She also seems to be quite the naturalist, and her favorite activity is watching squirrels. There is a local drive up, Foster's Freeze, that we go to for a soda, and if she could power the motor of my car by sheer force of will, I would save a lot of money on gas, despite the gas sipper that a Metro is. Also, I think she would like to be a hood ornament. If she's not hanging her head out the window, she's standing over the stick shift and hand brake, as close to the windshield as we'll allow her.

Like most of our other girls, she has decided the only way to sleep is under the covers, and not her own. It has to be with her human.

The other ones I wrote about are now gone, but not forgotten and I can't stand to leave them out, so here goes.

Mahana moved out of Mom and Dad's home with my sister Dawn and I. A wonderful moving present if there ever was one. She was a very good dog. She was very protective of us, loved to go on rides, and did her best to remind us, starting about a half an hour before, that dinner time was coming up soon.
Sometimes she could be quite authoritative, so we teasingly called her "Your Majesty." She especially loved young dogs and could be quite mothering.
She seemed to get cold easily, so would get covered up. She was the one that started the whole thing. Penny just took it one step further.

It wasn't long after we moved that Dawn got to thinking that we needed another Doberman (our breed of choice), because poor Mahana was playing musical beds with us. I started work earlier than Dawn, so took Mahana for the first shift at night. A few hours later, when Dawn went to bed, off went Mahana with Dawn, then back with me a few hours later, until I went to work, then she was scooted back onto Dawn's bed.

Through my Dad's contacts, (he's a veterinarian), we found out about Dogworks and were able to pick up Stormy, a sweet 4 month old Rottie/Doberman mix from an animal hospital about three or so hours away, where they had done a spay and a tail docking, since the previous "owners" seemed to have tried to do it themselves by putting a rubber band around her tail and it got badly infected.

She loved everybody, and despite her imposing size and obvious looks to what people considered terrifying breeds, people were drawn to her. She oozed a sincere desire to meet people and loved to clean their hands or any other part of the body that could be reached. (Like little kid's faces.) She seemed to be a human heating unit, and was the only dog that generally did not need to be covered. It was heaven having her next to you as she liked to lie back to back and helped warm up the bed pretty quickly. She liked to help clean in other ways too. Heaven forbid there was a dog bowl with any kibble in it, it got swiped clean by an eager tongue. She really felt she was helping my parents when we'd go to visit them. Their silly (Standard) Poodles would leave stuff like that hanging around?

She also had an endearing habit of carrying things around. Unfortunately, the other dogs loved to de-stuff toys, and she was frequently left with the limp remains. She also liked to carry the little sample bags of dog food. If she thought she was going for a ride, you'd see her looking urgently for something to carry!

After a month or so with Stormy, the rescue group called my Dad's animal hospital, which is where Dawn was working at at the time. Someone had called to say they found a Doberman puppy and had tried for a month to find her owners to no avail. They were told by their landlord they had to get rid of her that night. Could they drop her off to get her spayed, then Dogworks would take over from there.

Not long after she showed up, I got a call from Dawn. When she told me about this puppy, I could see the writing on the wall. She had already fallen in love with her and was determined to keep her. All day in the kennels she had been quiet, but when Dawn took her back the next morning she kicked up such a fuss! We figured she was VERY upset at being taken away from her home like that, and was letting us know she had found her home!

She was relentlessly happy! All you had to do was look at her and she'd wag her stubby little tail! She got the wagging so quickly that her behind couldn't help but join in and we said she was doing the Tahitian Fast Dance. She'd also use her wagging tail to try to distract us if she was up to no good. For some reason, she had no control over her tongue when we ate in the front room, and would start tasting the air as her head moved unerringly to our plate of food. When we'd admonish her, the tail would start to wag as if to say, "See how cute I am?" It was really hard to stay mad at her, or any of them, for long.

Although her ears were cropped, one refused to stand up, and we figured it was her subtle way of reminding us which way we'd "go" after death depending on how well we treated her.

She was also fearless and bold. Nothing could get in her way. She'd keep whacking at whatever was blocking her way until it finally moved and she could get by. She, too, was a very good dog, but got weak around anything smelling tasty, and garbage cans or counter tops didn't stop her from trying to get to the yummy tidbits she knew were there. We eventually installed a gate that attached to the walls, that took some tough treatment but held it's ground for the most part, with a few repairs.

For some reason, we had a hard time coming up with her name and called her the "Little Red One" from May to November. One day she had evidently found some pills that made her very wobbly, like drunk. That scared and saddened us to think that if something had happened she hadn't had a proper name. At almost the same time we thought of the name Penny. A Pretty Penny, because she was worth so much more than one cent to our hearts.

She's the one who started the sleeping under the covers. I always thought I was in a little bit of heaven surrounded by my 'babies'. Penny liked to dive under head first and lay the length of my legs, and her warm breath would warm my feet. (Perhaps she did that out of self defense? Keep the feet off her belly?)
That was especially great during the winter. I like to sleep in a cold room, but be warm under the covers. It didn't take nearly as warm to warm up with two or three large dogs sharing a queen sized bed.

ALL of our girls love our Dad. Once he showed up, you'd think we no longer existed! (I have to admit though, Doc was another story. . .)
If we said Dad, we'd have to be prepared to have him show up within a 15 minute's grace period or else we'd be read the riot act!

Another thing, all our girls but Mahana have learned to accept that warm bellies attract cold hands and feet. When I did that to Mahana for the first and last time, she practically levitated off the bed!

I know there's tons more to tell you about each one, and I'm sure I'll be figuratively kicking myself later for forgetting to tell you about one thing or another, but I'll sign off for now with a few more pictures.

So now it's your turn! If all you want to do is post a picture, fine. Whatever I can get. . . I so love animals!

Those terriers are adorable. I especially love the white one. Sometime, we'll be getting another dog. We'll check shelters, but I'd really like one that doesn't shed.

Barnbum, that close up picture of your cat is a great picture. If I had a picture of my cat like that I would blow it up and hang it on the wall.
