My best memory of the 4th was a family gathering at my brother's in the Colorado mountains. We had buckets of dirt from a topaz mine and spent the morning finding jewels. Then we dressed the 4 and 2 year old in costumes, made pinwheels and ribbons streamers, decorated the wheel barrel and paraded them up and down the dirt road by the house. My 80 year old mother taught them to say "Hooray for the 4th of July!" They begged to go again and again, so we took turns parading and being the crowd cheering. For dinner we ate fresh caught trout and crayfish. What is your favorite memory of the nation's birthday?

A number of years ago, Chicago had a Fourth of July concert in Grant Park. We could listen to the concert on the radio. At the conclusion of "The 1812 Overture", fireworks were shot off from a barge across Lake Shore Drive from Monroe Harbor. A friend had a sailboat moored at Monroe and it happened to be the closest mooring to the barge. We could see the shadows of the workers running around setting off the fireworks. Absolutely spectacular!!! My very best Fourth of July ever spending it on the lake with family and good friends.

When I was little we were on an army bace in alabama.
We couldn't shoot fire works off on the base,buuuttt daddy took my brothers sister & me to a wooded area away from the houses & put the hood up on the car & set off some fireworks any way. When the mp's came by they ask daddy if it was us & he said no because he was working on the car hehehe. so the went away & left us to the fun. CAthy A tumrub

I think my favorite memory was my dad celebrating. I believe it was his favorite holiday. He used to spend over $100 (back in the 50's) for fireworks. Then put up a large 4 x 4, 8 foot high with a cross piece and figured out how to have one spinner after another light the next with a long fuse. In between he shot off fireworks from the ground. His show would last for over an hour. (Our house was surrounded by 3 large fields.) It got to the point that all the kids in a 2 block area came to our house to watch fireworks. He always made sure everyone was safe and at the end every kid that wanted got at least one sparkler. He had so much fun.

All of my 4th's when I was a child were great, always meant family picnics with aunts, uncles, grandmas & grandpas and dozens of cousins. This year, however will be my saddest. We woke up this morning to find our almost 16 yr old pom dead on the floor, so we spent most of the morning digging a grave and burying her. We will remember the freedom we have & all those who sacrafices so much to keep us free this year, but we will not be doing much celebrating.

Very similar, but in Boston, they shoot off the fireworks from a barge on the Charles River. We were on the tugboat that came to pull the barge back out. Fireworks coming right at you, unbelievable.

I have several memorable 4ths. The first was when I was about 4 or 5. We lived across the street from a semi-pro baseball diamond. My babysitter took me out in the yard & thrilled me as she made sparklers pinwheel thru the air. Most of them went out when they hit the ground but evidently a couple didn't. They set the ball diamond on fire! We'd gone back into the house & were doing whatever when we heard sirens & looked out to a blaze. Yikes! We didn't get in trouble but it was quite a memorable 4th.

Another year my older cousin promised he'd make us super fire crackers. He was to start his surgical rotation in medical school July 1st so this was actually a little before the 4th. He was mixing various components for the fire crackers when somehow it sparked & there was quite the explosion in his bedroom... enough to blow his ear drum completely out & blow a couple of his fingers off. Needless to say, he's not a surgeon. And I've steered real clear of fire crackers ever since!

The last was 2 4ths in a row. The first took place when we lived in OK & the second when we'd moved back to KS. Both years I tripped (different ways) while doing housework (see what doing housework does for you? LOL!) & broke all 10 of my toes... 2 years in a row! I'm here to tell you... the ER on the 4th is one busy place! And I'll also add that while broken toes may not sound particularly painful (inconvenient, yes, but not painful), they really are. They take forever to heal, too.

This 4th was calm... thankfully! LOL!!!
