1970s music

What would be your favorite best and worst song(s) of the 1970s? I'm talking about music that just defines the era for you - the tunes that when you hear them, they take you back to where you were, how you were dressed, and what you were smokin (ha!) when you first heard it. My taste in music is really eclectic, so please differentiate between the good, bad, or ugly, as I'm apt to like it all!

I'm doing a mix cd for work - we're dressing 1970s for Halloween. I will name the CD "1970s - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly".

I'm making a sock puppet out of a knee high stocking - it will look like Cher. I'm getting a cheesy mustache and I'll be going as Sonny and Cher Energy! I see a really bad ventriloquist act in my future.....but it'll be fun! Yes, I know, Sonny & Cher were more of a 60s thing, but you couldn't have the 70s without the 60s right? And that's when their tv show was on too.

And I thought a mix cd would be fun as well.

So....songs? Ideas? So far I'm thinking:

I Will Survive (good or ugly, depends on what time of the month it is!)
Disco Duck (really ugly)
YMCA (GREAT)
American Pie (good)
Afternoon Delight
Rapper's Delite (ugly)
Play That Funky Music (I double dog DARE you not to shake your booty to this one!)
Shake your booty (good)
Stayin Alive (good)
Grease (good)
Theme from Jaws (GREAT)
Da Doo Run Run by Shaun Cassidy (cuz he was my first celebrity crush, but hey, I was 9 and it was the 70s)
Muskrat Love (ugly)

And NO CHEATING from internet searches....because most of the above came from one!

Can't wait to hear your ideas.....

Thanks,
Gina

I love (and constantly play) anything by The Eagles. Your party sounds like lots of fun!!

Jingle 10-24-2012 05:10 AM

I like all the songs you listed and I like about anything music from Big Bands to some today. Anything song really that has a good sound, beat, etc. In the truck we listen to an oldies station playing mostly 70s-80s. I'm 67.

You don't have anything from "The Urban Cowboy" and you're from Houston. LOL. How about "Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places" by Johnny Lee. good

funcupl 10-24-2012 06:52 AM

Cherish by the Association....love that one. Or any of the Rightous Brothers songs....Reminds me of my dating years. Isn't it funny how some songs just bring back memories of what you were doing at that time in your life?

Chasing Hawk 10-24-2012 09:56 AM

Oh gosh!!
I would have to copy my whole playlist on my Ipod here.....lol

Out of 732 songs on it, I would have to say at least half of those are somewhere in the '70's. My husband is a diehard classic rock man.

debquilts2 10-24-2012 10:08 AM

The only LEGAL way I know of to get songs on your iPod without paying for them is if you already have a collection of music on CDs. You can import those CDs using iTunes. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase your songs.

fatquarters 10-24-2012 10:42 AM

Goodbye yellow brick road, Elton John.

I read your post this morning, and have had this song in my head ever since. I thought maybe if I just come back and tell you , my brain would quit singing it.

I didn't pay for all 732 songs...LOL.... on my Ipod, most of them came from our CD collection that I imported to Itunes. I paid for 216 from the Itunes store. But this is over at least 4 year period and some of it was paid for by gift cards. My family knows how much I love music.

cbpirate 10-24-2012 05:40 PM

but, looking at all the lists does bring back a lot of memories

Pam S 10-24-2012 05:50 PM

Everybody's coming up with the best songs, what about the worst ones? For me that would be tie between Disco Duck and Feelings. Some things do not improve with age.

Neesie 10-24-2012 06:02 PM

Okay, worst song . . . how about "You're Having My Baby," by Paul Anka? :D

mrsponcho1 10-24-2012 06:04 PM

Oh, the memories from high school....lol

Peckish 10-24-2012 06:05 PM

AARRGGHHHH "Feelings" that song was the WORST! And there was another idiotic song, "loving you is easy 'cause you're beautiful"... can't remember who sang it, but my husband says her Indian name is "Sings With Dolphins" lol (because the notes went up so high)

Peckish 10-24-2012 06:10 PM

Monster Mash... anything by the Carpenters....

auntpiggylpn 10-25-2012 02:51 AM

I have to tell you that "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf is my all time favorite song! I even have it as my ringtone on my cell phone. I realize that it originally came out in the late 60's but I think it got the h*ll played out of it in the 70's!!

Donna Summer "I Feel Love"
Anything by Barry White, Al Green

quiltdragon 10-25-2012 04:39 AM

Oooh, so difficult! This is my pared-down list, in no particular order, and no going back over it because I would have added loads more!

Sometimes when we touch - Dan Hill
Follow You, Follow Me - Genesis
Three Times a Lady - Commodores
We've Got Tonight - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
House of the Rising Sun - Animals
A Horse with No Name - America
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzie (because I bought the single for my mum thinking she would love it!!!)
Mouldy Old Dough - Lieutenant Pigeon (just too funny)
Baby I love your Way - Peter Frampton
I'll Have to say I Love You in a Song - Jim Croce
You are so Beautiful - Joe Cocker

That's only a fraction of my real list! I have to cringeingly admit I used to cry myself to sleep over David Soul singing "Don't Give Up On Us"!!!! Anyone else?

TanyaL 10-25-2012 04:54 AM

I Didn't Promise You a Rose Garden - Good
Jimmy Buffetts - All Bad

Neesie 10-25-2012 06:54 AM

Back to the BEST - Ya need to throw in some by The Temptations and The Four Tops! Was thinking those were from my 60s days but they continued into the 70s, as well. I graduated from high school, in '71, so the two decades kinda run together, for me.

I have to say, some of the songs, on others' BEST lists, would be on my WORST list . . . and vice-versa! :D

Caswews 10-25-2012 07:13 AM

Wait a minute here ... I cannot shake my booty like I used to or my hips will have to see a chiropractor !LOL
Hmmmm... Lots of good songs came out of the 70's including some umm One hit wonders .. I would have to really break this up and say: Transsiberian Orchestra (yah I am a fan of the old band era -and no I am not THAT old !LOL, hmm maybe that was the 80's ? Hmmmm not really sure anymore its that door way study..LOL).
Gosh never really thought about it .. hmm must go listen to the cd's of 70's music to figure it out .. LOL
