Celebration today, hubby got his new kidney and pancreas transplant 20 years ago today

What a great day to celebrate. He was a severe diabetic since he was in 4th grade and was on 3 shots of insulin a day.

In 1989 both kidneys failed and was on home dialysis for 1 year and still worked a full time job

On September 18, 1990 he got a new chance in life! He got a new kidney and pancreas transplant at Indianapolis, Indiana.

He is no longer a diabetic and no longer on insulin!

He was one of the patients that made history for Methodist Hospital as the did the following transplants within 24 hours at the hospital and cancelled all other surgeries

1. my hubby got kidney and pancreas
2. guy got other kidney
3. guy got heart
4. lady got lung
5. another lady got lung

all of these organs from the same donor (he was drinking and riding his motorcyle and was brain dead) we are so thankful that he donated his organs for others

also skin, eyes, bone marrow was donated to other hospitals

(when the donor, Peter got his drivers license he told his parents he wanted to be an organ donor) we are so blessed that he was as he has helped out alot of patients

Thanks everyone!

We had a Dr. appt. last month and as we was walking down the hallway we ran into his surgeon. He was so happy to see Reggie and there was another Dr. with him and he sure talked about the double transplant to the other Dr.

It made our day!

It is wonderful to know that your husband is still doing well 20 years after the transplants!

Does he have any restrictions because of them? Anything extra he must do to maintain them?

Yay for hubby - congrats! I love my insulin pump, but would love a working pancreas even more.
