Lots of us talk about our fur babies. Lots of you commiserated with me when Ebony, my black Siamese died a few weeks ago.

Now, I have found a new friend. He is about 6 years old and is an Akita.

It is fairly new breed in this country so I don't get to meet many owners. Thorn seems to be quiet and loving (a lot of bonding still has to happen) and we want to do the best for him as we are his third home in 2 years.

I will post a photo of him soon. I think he is really handsome. Psstttt don't tell my husband as he could get jealous!

If any of you have an Akita, I would very much appreciate your input about the breed.

I don't have an Akita, but I do have a funny story about one. Many years ago we lived in Japan. Every afternoon a Japanese man came down our street walking his Akita. The dog was almost as tall as he was, and he had a rope on that dog That was as big as the ropes they use to tie up ships...big ships! One day, our Scottish Terrier broke his chain to run after the Akita. When he got there I don't know who was the most afraid, the Scottie who realized the Akita's foot was as big as he was, or the poor Japanese man who was about ready to let go the rope and run!

A friend has one of these lovely creatures, and since she lives alone finds that when the word gets out what she has as living with her, she has no unannounced visitors at all. When we go to visit we are introduced and then the dog goes off to lie down somewhere else. Well trained, he is. And a lovely dog he is.

But not as pretty as my own lovely Dobermans!!!

Theres a movie about one, called Hiatchi, or something like that.....you have GOT to see it. I cried for days after seeing the movie! Akitas are VERY loyal!

They will bond with you and they are very protective, Find a special treat for him. Something that he really likes and only give it to him when he does what you ask him to do.

We don't have Akitas but have a relative who does. They seem to be friendly, but good watch dogs, but can be territorial and aggressive to other animals. I would check out a book from the library on them, but don't give him up just because of what a book says about them. He deserves a chance and thank you for giving him that chance, I'm sure he'll make a wonderful companion for you.

No Akitas here. though my Siberian is mixed with one of his relatives - a Shiba Inu. They are beautiful dogs in any size. Welcome to the quilting world, Thorn.

I had an Akita, he was laid to rest about 5 years ago, I still dream about him,and find myself getting a little choked up as I type this. He was a very smart, and quiet dog , he always seemed to be so wise and aware of everything. He was not real affectionate as some dogs are but he loved his family, and always wanted to be in the same room as us. he knew what our schedules were and would go lay in the yard and look down the drive waiting. He always slept by my bed at night. I still miss the wise old man......

They can be very protective of their family, you may need to watch him if you have lots of people in and out.My Akita never once offered to be agressive with people he knew but I did not trust him with strangers which was fine with me . Unlike the two clowns I have now a bassett and a bull dog, they welcome everyone lol.
