Does anyone else this annoying pop up that's called My Web Face. It says you can make a cartoon of your face and it's free you just have to click. I was getting it a lot when I first joined this board and they luckly it went away. Today it is back with a vengence and it's a pain in the neck and impossible to get rid of. I barely get to read one discussion and there it is showing it's ugly face again and again and again. Please help. I do have an antivirus and pop up blocker on my computer and this is the only site that this is happening on. :-(

Yup, in the same boat! I asked Admin about it and he says that I probably have adware somewhere on my system. Got that far, was going to research adware, and then was distracted. Now that it's back again, I'll have to renew my research!

quilter711 03-02-2011 01:49 PM

I have the same issue with the same controls in place. Only happens on the "Quilting Board". I live in MA! Is this a state issue???? I wish we could get rid of it!

irishrose 03-02-2011 01:49 PM

I've never seen it. The only pop ups I get here are the quilting ones and ones that pertain any subject discussed. It's a little unnerving to have a shoe ad show up if someone mentions shoes, etc.

GrammaBabs 03-02-2011 01:50 PM

YES..... have to go off and then back on, from my e-mail notification... how does this happen...??? anyone know?

PegD 03-02-2011 01:50 PM

I don't have it.

GrammaBabs 03-02-2011 01:51 PM

i was going to say it was "new england".. but i see another state as well....................

cakes quilts 03-02-2011 01:56 PM

I get it also. Its very annoying.

quilter711 03-02-2011 01:57 PM

I have McAfee. Does anyone know if this protects you against Adware? My subscription is active and up to date. I have done a full scan of my system. Still have it!

You will have to get some to remove the adware I think, hubby always takes care of that for me. That one of the reason I keep him. LOL

miss_ticky2 03-02-2011 02:05 PM

It certainly sounds like some adware or malware. An antivirus program may not necessarily pick it up. You need something to detect adware/malware. Try Superantispyware and Malwarebytes...both good free programs and they are safe. I use them both all the time, in addition to my antivirus. If you google each you will get the site to download them from.

With the protection I have I shouldn't be getting this. I'm sorry others are getting this nuisance too but I'm glad I'm not alone. At least it's not only here in MA.

I'm going to run my software on my own. It usually just runs when the time is set up by the program. Maybe that will help.

*Knocking on wood* I haven't had it in a while, maybe my wonderful wife took care of it when she brought my computer back from the land of the blue screen!

I've had this happen several times...primarily when I'm in the "Pictures" section. Very annoying and I have to get off the board and go somewhere else, then return. It only happens at this site. Not sure if it's linked, but had to run a scan the other night because of Java...

ghostrider 03-02-2011 02:45 PM

This issue has come up before. There is a "possible" solution on the last page. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-96432-1.htm Oh, and btw, malware programs do not get rid of it.

ptquilts 03-02-2011 03:02 PM

try using Firefox with AdBlocker Plus. All free and I never get popups or banner ads on this site.

BellaBoo 03-02-2011 03:08 PM

I use Google Chrome for my browser, no pop ups and no sites load that has a virus or spyware attached. You need a registry cleaner to get rid of most spyware. The best cleaner and tune up used by most computer fix it places is called Tune Up. You can use if free for 30 days to fix your computer and then if you like it buy it. An ex Best Buy computer guy told me use it before buying a new computer.

I use Firefox and it also will do a spell check as I'm typing. I love this browser. I never use internet explorer any more.

donnajean 03-02-2011 03:57 PM

My computer has Windows Vista with Explorer. When you click on "Tools" on the top Menu bar, there is an option to turn "Pop up blocker" on or off. I keep mine on off, & only turn it on when it's something I know I want to see.

Mine works this way also...

EagarBeez 03-02-2011 05:56 PM

I don't get any pop up's at all... I have Norton Internet Security and it seems to take care of everything. Maybe you should shut down your computer and reboot it, or do get a mal ware program and run it to take out something like that. Check your tools on internet, and your pop ups, you can add sites that you don't want to recieve pop ups from, and you can add the quilting board, and that may take care of it

cbjlinda 03-03-2011 02:44 AM

I never get any popups but then I think my norton takes care of a lot of problems like that and I am sure my hubby has one of those programs that prohibits them.

granky 03-03-2011 03:39 AM

I had the same thing happening with a porn site with the same response from the quilting board administrators. I called my computer geek friend and was told to download two free programs...Adaware by Lavasoft and Spybot. I did, and it got rid of most of the problem, but not all. I searched my 'programs' list from my start menu (where it lists all the programs but you don't have to go to 'programs' on your C drive) and found a new Antivirus that was a fake. I deleted it and all is well. The culprit is a program that tries to make you think it is protecting your computer. At least, that was what was happening in my case.

Shorebird 03-03-2011 04:07 AM

Your anti virus probably is not going to fix this.....i sounds more like adware or malware......and there are free downloads that will remove those.....I am in VA and do not have that problem on this site. You do have to be very careful with using links

Flo Pierce 03-03-2011 04:10 AM

There has to be a way to get rid of it. My dh is asleep or he could tell you. Please get somekind of virus protection on you
computer or you'll get something (being on line) worse than that little face.

Try to run your scan as an administrator. My web search is annoying. I took me quite a while to get my web search off until spybot told me to run as administrator. It is a free download. I learned never to click on any smiley faces. Hope this helps.

lovedquilts 03-03-2011 04:40 AM

I get it too.

Jackie D 03-03-2011 04:49 AM

I never get pop ups, are they advertisements?

So far no faces here. Thankfully! I think my avatar ate them!!

If you don't have these programs, download them (they are freeware) and run a FULL scan with Malwarebytes.
Then run CCleaner.
Best I have found so far!!

Malwarebytes Anti-malware (Free Version):
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

CCleaner (right side of screen by green download arrow:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

You should see a difference in speed after running these also.

Another thing...
Don't know what version of windows you run (I have Win XP)
If you click on "TOOLS" up in your browser. In the list of items there should be one that says "POP UP BLOCKER"
Scroll down to it & make sure it is turned ON.

jad1044 03-03-2011 05:03 AM

I beleive there is a place in the computer where you can block pop-ups from happening, but I'm no guru - just go by what my sevice tech told me.... but it helped with NO pop-ups at all on any site I get into! Lovely!

RIDGEFIELD 03-03-2011 05:03 AM

I thought it was just me that was receiving these annoying pop-ups. You have to keep clicking on it to close it. If everyone is getting them it must be on the board site. Hope they can find a way to fix it.
