Well this has to come out at some point. I was let go from my job friday as part of some restructuring thing my boss is doing he said it had nothing to do with me or my performace but that i was being let go later i find out from my manager who has given his two weeks notice that he my boss is looking to hire lower wage people this for some reason didnt surprise me he has been complaining of money woes for some time despite the fact that we wer busy. well i filed for unemployment for today and financially ill be ok i just wanted to let friends here know whats going on with me. I guess there is a bright side to this ill have plenty of sewing time for now and time to do projects around the house. this still makes me kinda sad though i didnt exactly like my job and there wer inherent risks involved with it but it was framiliar to me and i liked my co-workers well enough about this just thought my friends here should know where im at. Chris

sewjoyce 05-04-2009 05:23 AM

More time for sewing and okay financially???? Sounds like a win-win situation to me

(Are you sure your boss can lay you off and then hire someone to take your place at a cheaper rate??????? You might want to look into your legal options also....)

chairjogger 05-04-2009 05:29 AM

So sorry for loosing your job. You are making lemonade with a sour thing happening.

Good luck to you !!
Ellen

Piedmont Quilter 05-04-2009 05:38 AM

So sorry to hear about your job lose. Although, more time for sewing sounds great :D :D I would run the laying off and re-hiring at a lower rate by the Labor Board just to see what they say. That is not good business practice and the Labor Board or BBB should be made aware of this.

Welcome to the club GK. I was laid off in Nov due to "downsizing" yet they had two interviews that morning for new hires. There is nothing out there in my neck of the woods. I don't know what I will do when unemployment ends. God will provide.

sharon b 05-04-2009 06:06 AM

Chris I am so sorry to hear this news, and unfortunatley I think it will get worse before it gets better. Count your blessings that you can make it on the unemployment, there are many who can't. And we will be looking forward to seeing so many more of your projects ! See this is me waiting  LOL Now get sewing and pounding

Sew Joyce is right. But, the way they get around this is to retitle the job and description, which many companies are doing right now. If what they are saying is true, why would they have not offered you a pay cut to stay, which many companies are doing right now.

If you have past reviews showing you were doing your job. I think you should go to your local labor board.

Kyiav10 05-04-2009 06:55 AM

Chris, I am so sorry to hear about your job loss. My thoughts are with you. Please let us know if you need anything.

Kyia :(

tlrnhi 05-04-2009 07:04 AM

Oh Chris...I'm sorry to hear that!
I'm sure you'll find something, but in the meantime, you can finish your projects! :)

Having been in this position 20 years ago when the computer industry consolidated and tightened up, I know what you're going through. A couple of pieces of unsolicited advice:

1) Start your job hunt now, not when your unemployment runs out. Your job right now is to 'find a job.' With the market like it is, it may take some time and you may find yourself headed in a new direction. You may not find anything making the money you make now. Chances are though, it will pay more than unemployment.

2) Don't get discouraged. These things take time. It's easier to do when you are not completely without income. You'll also interview better while you still have the unemployment safety net - it's an attitude thing.

Hang in there!

Shelley 05-04-2009 07:07 AM

One more thing.

I never did go back into my old field - computer programming. I became an accountant, working for a CPA. I eventually opened my own bookkeeping business so I could work around the kids' schedules. I've now added the quilting business. I guess my point is, go with the opportunities you find. You may find something you like better than your last job. ATTITUDE....It's all attitude!!!

Ive seen my boss do similar things to other good people i think he just doesnt like to keep people too long it probly isnt worth fighting this issue

I was going to try and find something in the sewing field we have some upholstery shops and things around here. I was a welder mostly at my last job but i did also sew awnings and other things together for them so i gained a new skill while i worked there.

Ducky 05-04-2009 07:15 AM

Sorry to hear about this, Chris. It's a hard blow to take, even if you have an inkling it will happen. Been there, done that. I echo Kyia....let us know if you need anything. All the best to you.

Joan 05-04-2009 07:33 AM

Chris, I am so sorry to hear about your job but knew you didn't totally "like" it. This economic "downturn" is causing lots of changes for lots of people.

Let's just hope that "when one door closes, another door opens......." applies here.....

Regardless, change is always difficult to deal with and my thoughts are with you. Thank goodness for unemployment!

Hugs,
Joan

quiltnut4ever 05-04-2009 08:12 AM

Sorry to hear what your're going through. This is the time to rest and enjoy the peace and serenity and of course quilt! {{{{HUGS}}}}

leona07 05-04-2009 08:44 AM

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your job. My boyfriend was laid off from his job of 12 years the day before thanksgiving! It is so tough out there right now!! There are no jobs anywhere!! My mom was also temporarily laid off while her job changes owners.

In these tough times, it is best to try to be optimistic. When one door closes, another door opens!! I wish you the best of luck, and enjoy the vacation that you have been given!!!!

beachlady 05-04-2009 08:49 AM

Sorry about your job loss. I am sure something will come about. Another reason I am glad I am retired! No one can let me go!!!!

gcathie 05-04-2009 09:17 AM

Butterflyspain 05-04-2009 09:19 AM

Just a thought, but in England it is illegal for a Boss to do that and you could object to that through a solicitor or someone.

Very mean.

Tink's Mom 05-04-2009 09:21 AM

Sorry to hear this,Chris, but you will be able to enjoy(?) the nice weather, and get some sewing done.....

My son was downsized in Dec., and the also brought in people that were 1/2 of his salery.

Sorry you got the boot - even if it appeared to be a soft-sided Ugh. I agree with sewjoyce that there may be some legal irregularities - however, if you are OK with the situation, then good luck on your next journey.

I think only a quilter can see the logic between Welding and Sewing.

quilter1962 05-04-2009 10:00 AM

Chris

So sorry to hear that you have been laid off from work. Keep your chin up & think positive - something may well turn up unexpectantly, you know how when your not looking sometimes that door of opportunity appears.

Keeping you in my thoughts. My job also looks very bleak. I am currently looking for alternative work too.

Exactly! And, I can tell by what you have said, GK, that you are in that mode ... looking for opportunities. My exact first thought was: Sometimes, we don't like a job, but we are committed to the friends we have made there. When it is time to move on, we hang on until the bitter end for "them" ... which is fine, but you are sounding as though it was sort of a mutual separation. Do what your hand finds to do, and you will find your place. I am sorry that the job ended in this way, but in five years, you are going to look back (I'm betting) and say the best thing that ever happened was my boss invited me to leave ...
This too is an opportunity .... the hardest thing I have ever had to teach the kids is: The only limit is your imagination ...

Shemjo 05-04-2009 10:53 AM

Best of everything in your new venture!

bearpaw 05-04-2009 11:17 AM

I don't really have any words of advice other than what has been posted already, but I can say I'm sorry.

I've always wanted to learn upholstery. Good luck if that's where this takes you!

pocoellie 05-04-2009 11:32 AM

I'm glad you're okay financially. It's probably better this way anyway, maybe you'll find a job you enjoy, in the meantime you can be getting quilts done.

quiltwoman 05-04-2009 01:29 PM

Sorry to hear your news. It sounds like you have a great attitude about it.

Jim's Gem 05-04-2009 01:32 PM

Sorry to hear you lost your job Chris. This will be good time to get some sewing and some relaxing done. I hope that you can find another job that you might like better.

Butterfli19 05-04-2009 02:04 PM

Chris - you see the positive in this and that is wonderful. For years my motto has been "Everything is Temporary." Try to limit your pity parties and keep busy. Get into a routine just like you did for work. Take one or two week's "vacation" then start the job search. In the mean time, spend time with your hobbies and spruce up the house. Little things work wonders. Sew a valance, make some new chair cushions, a couple of potholders or something special just for you.

Things always get better. It may take time, but they do.

genghis khan 05-04-2009 04:22 PM

Thanks everyone for your support, at first when this happend i wasnt going to say anything about this (must be a male ego thing) but then i got to thinking that it would kind of like lying to my friends in here and maybe i needed to talk about it and i do feel better haveing gotten that out of the way thanks again everyone. Chris

Chele 05-04-2009 04:29 PM

Tough news, Chris. Keep your chin up and find that perfect job. Or, just one that pays the bills. That's why we work right? And that's why they call it work! Stay positive.

kimmers 05-04-2009 04:32 PM

So sorry to hear your news! Maybe in your search for a new job you will find the one that you enjoy going to everyday! My thoughts will be with you in your search!

mary quite contrary 05-04-2009 05:27 PM

Sorry to hear this Chris.

amma 05-04-2009 09:03 PM

I'm so sorry to hear this Chris, glad that you are being so optomistic about it :D When one door closes another one opens  Can't wait to see your quilting projects while you are waiting on a new opportunity to happen :D :D :D

I understand Chris, what you say about the male ego thing. It's not just a guy thing. Any time i've lost a job, i always felt like i'd given it my all, and so when it happens, it's not just the finances, but it feels like a kick in the gut. Your job becomes a part of who you define yourself as. Sorry this has happened, but now you have time to quilt, right? :)

reneebobby 05-05-2009 02:43 AM

Sorry about the job, but where one door closes another one opens, keep a positive attitude and good luck

quiltswithdogs 05-05-2009 03:33 AM

I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. My husband still has his but his pay has decreased so much it is now minimum wage. They don't talk about all those who are employed but fewer days/less income in all the statistics in the news. If it wasn't for health insurance, my hubby would go look for another job. COBRA would be just too expensive for us during the next job's probation period. We know because we had to pay for it last year when he got downsized out of the previous job. But, I ended up needing 2 surgeries in 08, so we were very glad we signed up for it. Just a reminder.... don't forget to arrange for health insurance!
Good luck on your current "job"; looking for a new job!
