Baking soda issue
 

I thought I'd share this humorous/frustrating thing I discovered earlier today. I went to take my extra box of baking soda out of the cupboard only to discover that it was a Fridge-and-Freezer Pak!! I know I had to have picked it up in the baking aisle so this was quite a surprise! It says on the box that it is not recommended for baking because of the ingredients! I definitely purchased it for baking but rather than toss it out, I've put it in my fridge :-)

I will chalk this up as one of my senior experiences and hopefully by pointing it out, it may save you the frustration of making the same mistake.

tell your grocery store people that too. they put it in the wrong isle to me.

Never heard of it! Hard to believe it is different from the baking kind. I can tell you something baking soda really helps and that is to put a little in your towel load each time you wash them and it takes out the "smell" that towels can get even after washing them carefully. I put it in the pre-wash section.

News to me,seems it doesn't keep the frozen green peppers from making the freezer stink.

It's regular baking soda just in a different package and you can use it for baking. It's only AFTER using it in the fridge that it shouldn't be used for baking, not because it's dangerous to eat but because of the odors it absorbs would make your food taste funky. Nothing like chocolate chip cookies with a hint of onion...ack! LOL

On the box it says "while Fridge-N-Freezer contains pure Arm & Hammer banking Soda, we do not recommend it for baking as the granulation is designed specifically for deodorizing. After use, pour down the drain to freshen."

I also use baking soda to clean the toilet and as an abrasive cleaner and also with vinegar to clear slow moving drains and for a multitude of other things. It will not go to waste, but it is frustrating when you need to bake and don't have e right thing.

I notice a lot of things I'm picking up now days that I didn't want. Like crackers with no salt on them. Lite dressings. I don't like them. Stuff put back in the wrong place by CUSTOMERS WHO DECIDED AGAINST IT. Empty candy wrappers, someone's little one ate the insides, and they don't pay for it. But stores will put their brand, the same color wrapper against the popular one, so I pick up the store brand when I wanted a different one.

My son once did the same thing when I asked him to pick up some soda. It said it is not for baking, and I was not about to use it for that, so we put it in the fridge. I am too fussy about my baking to use something that clearly says "Not for baking"!

This is an easy fix. Only buy the baking kind. I used baking soda (baking kind) in the frig and freezer long before they sold a special box for that use. So buy the baking only and use it for baking and the fridge. I open the spout area of the box carefully, leaving the flap, then in a month, I hold the flap shake the box and put it back in the frig. Then I use it in the wash.

Sounds like my 88 year old mum, who was putting " coconut milk" on her breakfast cereal until I pointed out that it was a shampoo and not the edible kind...glad I went to visit.lol

It is really good for cleaning gunk off cars ( but doesn't leave a shine) and also for cleaning grime in the kitchen and bathroom.

I did the same thing but realized what it said before I pulled it off the grocery shelf.

actually I don't believe the whole "Deodorizes your fridge and freezer" racket - baking soda does not work that way. Now if you make a paste with water and smear it on something, it will clean off odors (like plastic containers). Also I like it for a mild scouring powder.

Just another racket to sell more baking soda IMO. Like unflavored gelatin was supposed to be good for your houseplants and your fingernails. People are doing less baking and they are certainly using less unflavored gelatin, so the companies come up with "NEW" uses.

Baking soda and white vinegar are my go to products for cleaning. Baking soda and white vinegar mixed together in a paste is great for cleaning sinks, tubs etc in place of scouring cleanser. Baking soda in wash freshens wash and you can use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. The clothes don't come out smelling like vinegar. I use white vinegar to remove mildew and mold from the stucco on the outside of my house instead of bleach. The list could go on and on...

Hmmm. I going to do this. Forgot about it. I have never been happy with my front load HE washer cause everything stinks, but maybe this will help.

As always, you ladies have some wonderful ideas! I'm going to try some of these things, especially adding it to the laundry, especially with towels. If only I could remember all these ideas, it would be more helpful.

I grabbed a package accidentally, too. Used it in the fridge, then used it in the cat litter. I've used baking soda in the litter box for years. Have one old cat (19 yrs) that has allergies so can't use anything but unscented litter. The baking soda doesn't bother him.

Baking soda - what a great kitchen helper. I use vinegar to clean my coffee pot. I make it about half vinegar and half water and run it through my coffee maker. Not to let good vinegar go to waste, I put the old baking soda in my bathroom drains, and pour the vinegar water on that and it will clean out the drains. I run at least 2 waters through the coffee pot and then pour the hot water down the drains. I almost never have clogs :)

i made some last week as well- so cheap and works great!
