Does anyone know any possible way to get black walnut stains off of my hands? I shelled about 1 five gallon bucket and I have about 3 more to go. I did about a half a bucket yesterday with regular garden gloves on and my hands were a little stained. So today, I wore latex gloves like my mom suggested and now my thumbs are black and I shelled just as many.

I’ve tried soap and hot water, shampoo, face wash, WD-40, Vaseline, lemon juice, salt, bleach, and lotion, all to no prevail. Any other ideas or cures??

The only good thing, it won't wear off on anything, so I can still quilt!

Try some hand cleaners from the automotive store. I believe one of them is called "Goop" another is "Goof Off". I don't know if they will work but could be worth a try.
Those walnuts will taste really good in some pumpkin bread this fall!! (and fudge...can't forget fudge!)

Try some coconut oil. Kroger and Walmart sell it in a 1 quart jar in with the other shortenings and oils. It runs around 5.00, no need to buy the high dollar virgin cold pressed oil for this job.

I always try to remove stains or tough dirt with like substances. Coconuts and walnuts - nuts!

Oh, I wish I lived closer to you. What a wonderful wealth of natural dye for fabric.

So, gonna share those ol' hulls with us, Ms. Black Hand? They're great for staining fabric for that 'primitive' look.

http://www.ehow.com/how_6704276_remo...ains-skin.html

Tells how to remove the stains from hulls. Some of the other ehow posts address removing wood staining products, not the real gen-u-ine black walnut. Get the right one.

bluteddi 09-21-2011 03:35 PM

just a thought... I wonder if makeup remover would help?

Liz aka Helen 09-21-2011 03:42 PM

Next time just pickle them before the shell gets hard, then you won't have to worry about them

dd 09-21-2011 03:42 PM

Now you know why the ladies used to use them for hair color in the old days. I remember stained fingers as a kid. Guess that's why grandmom always had us kids do it.ha ha

How do you pickle them ? does it effect the flavor at all ? My parents have a blk walnut tree and I thought about gathering some for fudge .

This little lady was wearing latex gloves under garden gloves but my hands are still stained. I think I might have gotten a whole in the thumb :(

Can I PLEASE have step by step on how to dye the fabric with Black Walnut hulls

And that is why they were used to "dye" fabric back when. Also cut the nuts into slices and used as buttons.

ummmmmmmm black walnuts......yes bread and fudge...reminds me of a candy store that sold that black walnut fudge...many years ago.

joyce888 09-22-2011 07:43 AM

No but I will take the Black Walnuts off your hands! As a kid that was the only walnut I knew (lived in Missouri). Still love them but they are really scarce in Georgia.

Charleen DiSante 09-22-2011 09:53 AM

grannypat7925 09-22-2011 09:58 AM

From my own experience as a child, it has to wear off. Always wear gloves when hulling walnuts!

sarahrachel 09-22-2011 10:03 AM

the oil doesn't work, but I plan on making a walnut pie (pecan pie but with walnuts instead) for thanksgiving and I love putting them in chocolate chip cookies and in my grandma's cinnamon rolls before baking, and of course sprinkling crushed ones on top of the icing!

jdiane318 09-22-2011 10:09 AM

I have used regular toothpaste and it took care of the stain and the smell.

OH MY GOD!!!! That acctually works!!!! Well, it took out most of today's stain, yesterday's must be in there pretty good by now, but the toothpaste started turning colors and I thought it was my imagination until when I washed it off part of my hands were cleaner!!! Thank you SOOOOO much!!

Ibis 09-22-2011 10:31 AM

NO matter what you use guess what it just has to ware off on its own i learned the hard way too and iam still waiting for stains to be completely gone i have tried almost any product known to remove stains no success.

When we lived in our house, we would spread the walnuts in the driveway and drive over them when going in and out of the drive. Be sure to get them picked up before the squirrels get them. That happened to us 1 yr. The little rascals took every single one. Oh, were we ticked. LOL Why ours when they had a whole city park full just a block away.?
