Be careful when bidding on items on e-bay as you might pay more for a second hand item when you can get a new item for less.I was bidding on a beautiful quilt pattern and before I bid I looked up the cost of the pattern new and it was 50.00 so I bid up to 40.00 for it I didnt win the item but the person who did bid and won it for 102.00 I will be getting this pattern brand new for 50.00 plus 5.00 for postage so I think I got the bargin

I've also taught myself to check the "new" price before bidding.
Been burned before that.

lauriejo 01-27-2011 04:45 AM

It is so easy to get caught up in the auction fever! I don't keep too much in my paypal account just so I have to really think about what I am buying. What is the pattern that cost $50?

sandyo 01-27-2011 04:47 AM

saw sewing machine on craigs list for $130 looked it up and could get it new for $90

One of my co-workers put a used cell phone on ebay expecting maybe 50 dollars it bid out at nearly 250 dollars, more than it cost new.

sewwhat85 01-27-2011 09:28 AM

i agree should always check new prices before buying anyplace on line not just biding

That much for a quilt pattern?
I find that original patterns for a Dianne Von Furstenburg 1970s wrap dress sells for over $129 dollars last time I looked. Found a used one in a bunch of patterns in a yard sale and never really looked at it till last month while decluttering, just bought it for a nice cape pattern that was in it.

Now what to do? Have to think on this. Might as well make myself one, always wanted one but never could justify the cost in the 70s. Not quilting, but maybe worthwhile. I need to be good to me some of the time.

What quilt pattern was it that cost so much. Others here might find them in flea markets/yard sales and be glad to sell them for much lesser $$$$$
I've passed over quilt patterns in the past, simply because I knew they were well beyond my ability to make them.

Those who use etsy check their prices also. I bought some polymer clay beads on there that I could have bought at another place for 1/2 price. I never thought anyone would do that. I never would but it takes all kinds.

christina d 01-28-2011 03:37 AM

the pattern is a set of twelve called birds in full view

Lyn 01-28-2011 04:39 AM

Usually a pattern like this comes in sets like a block of the month. You can get each separate pattern for a few dollars or buy the whole set.

CarrieAnne 01-28-2011 05:27 AM

WOW! Must have been a nice pattern!

If the seller on ebay has a store too check that before bidding. I found the same blocks in the store for less than the bidding price.

I never thought to do that. But now I will! thanks

sueisallaboutquilts 01-28-2011 08:41 AM

There's one seller on ebay I just love. She has penny auctions but also sells buy-it-now. I don't bother with the auctions b/c many have gone higher than the BIN price.
The others are right about checking what each seller has in their whole store.

Irishlady 01-28-2011 09:34 AM

I learnt my lesson the hard way. I put in a bid for a knitting pattern book on ebay. I won the auction with a bid of £16.00 for the book. Out of curiosity I looked the book up on Amazon, I wish I hadn't, they were selling the same book for £4.00. Needless to say, before bidding on anything I now do some research on prices.

I many people who bid on ebay are addicted to the winning process. It's like gambling and they really don't care about the price. I don't know.

Nanamoms 01-29-2011 08:12 PM

I've seen that happen, too. I actually listed a piece of exercise equipment and 2 people got in a bidding war. Ended up getting over Retail for it. That was nice for me, of course!!
