For some reason the barley always gets them, that is why I always put it in a bag but I think they eat thru it. That Kashi cereal is like health food store stuff it draws them like magnets. I guess if we freeze everything 1st we can kill them before they get started. Oh well at least the pantry is clean now. I use to sell Tupperware too. Don't know how I did it because I was kinda shy.

I think my cabinets are safe. They're all empty, except for the dishes, pots and pans in them. No food at all. :D

I had that problem till I found out how to fix it. First clean cupboards out of all possible bad food. Buy bay leaves, place a few loose in each cupboard. Then when buying food, freeze it first to kill anything that may have been in there before you bought it. I know, yuck, but most of the problems we all get is from storage before we get it. Once you remove it from freezer, keep in airtight containers as usual and you should be good. I (knock on wood) have been fee of them for several years now, the bay leaves just lay on the shelves in the cupboard, and are not in the way, I have them in every one with food.

I read once that when sailors had long sea voyages in the olden days and they existed on those hard baked 'ships biscuits', they were unknowingly being kept more nourished by the protein in the weevils that lived in the biscuits than by the biscuits themselves! :shock: :lol:

Have you noticed that bugs usually go for the more nutritious foods?

I have NEVER found a bug in the white sugar!

And if they have a choice, they go for the whole wheat flour before the bleached white flour.

Maybe the bugs are smarter than we are?

I keep ALL open foods such as grains and starches in the fridge or the freezer (except bread). my husband thinks I am nuts every time I need flour I have to run to the freezer but...it keeps us bug free!

I freeze all my starch food products for about two weeks then put in the pantry. The freezing kills all bugs that have not hatched. Since I started doing this I bought a small chest freezer just for this purpose. I leave all my baking ingredients in the freezer and take out the rice, pasta, pet food, after two weeks. Living in the south, an infestation will happen very fast if I don't stay on top of it. It took me about two months to get rid of my first encounter with the weevils. Never again do I want that hassle to go through.

i have had infestation after infestation and no matter what i did they alwasy came back. I removed everything from the pantry, threw out all the infested stuff and wiped down all the shelves, walls, under shelves and wiped down each jar and packet..whew what a job....I was sick of it...and then i read that bay leaves stop the reproduction cycle so i went out into my garden ( i have 3 bay leaf trees) and took 20cm cuttings and put them at the back of the pantry close to all the things that they always infest. i can happily say i have been bug free now for 6 months....I also used those sticky traps previously and they were full of moths so as you see i had a huge problem and the person who said that she thinks we bring them home from the store might be right.

If you store new products in your freezer for a couple of days,it will kill any eggs(yes,they are in it all). I had a weevil problem periodically until I did this ,then never again.
