What is your favorite memory of your childhood ? Mine was being rocked in my mother's lap when I was about 3or 4. My sweetest memory ! She would sing to me songs like , "as time goes by" and casey would waltz with the strawberry blond and the band played on , there'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of dover, etc. Another wonderful memory was when my father rocked me in his lap in my grandmother's rocker and I remember the smell of his freshly ironed white shirt when my face was pressed against his chest. Just realized they were both memories of being rocked !

One of the most prominent is the Freeway incident. I was maybe 3 or 4 ( no seatbelts at the time) we were flying down the freeway on a hot summer day and I was showing my dolly everything out the window when I lost her. In order to retrieve her my father walked back down the freeway for a mile until he found her on the shoulder. The vision of him walking away and returning doll clutched in hand is very vivid. I still have her in the china cabinet with a small scuff on her face. My mother taught us the beauty of art in evreything. All of us learned to create at her leading. Both my parents (my father a pastor) believed a child should be brought up in the Lord and taught to inquire- we had many discussions at the dinner table that included debates, bibles, dictionaries and other resources to support our point were branded like swords. Guests weren't always sure what to make of it if they hadn't been exposed to those dynamics. We were respectful but we expanded our vocabulary and learned new ways to express ourselves. Course if the guests were off balance by the interaction they usually were toppled by the goffy stuts we pulled most were just unplanned kid stuff.

My earliest quilting memory is working with my Grandmother, Mother,& Aunt embroidering & sewing together & then quilting baptism bibs for our church. I was about 5. This is the root of my love of any form of stitchery.

I remember all of us sitting in the parlour of the big old farm house we owned, fireplace blazing on a cold Buffalo, NY snowy night, laughing & sewing, having hot chocolate & homemade goodies that my Grandmother always made. She was the best baker, I can still taste her caramel & nut sweet buns!

All are gone now, but the memories warm my heart!

Thanks for starting this, you made my day happy!

Sitting quietly on the old wooden covered porch in front of the house, as dusk set in and I could hear my Grandma and an aunt or two and maybe an uncle rocking, rocking gently back and forth. I can remember holding a quart jar of lightening bugs with cheesecloth on top, and watching them flicker on and off. The quite voices with long pauses and the bushes full of lightening bugs going on and off, each bush in its different pattern, still lingers in my mind. That was a quiet time after all the work was done on the farm and family could come and visit. Talk was cheap but family was precious and togetherness was priceless.

I rememeber sitting close to mom and her trying for hours to teach me to crochet. We made so many granny squares. If she only knew what kind of love of crafts she was starting in me then. She is still my biggest fan.

writerwomen, I had to laugh at your post, as I have my own "freeway incident".

Probably about 1965, driving from FL to MI in a stationwagon...Dad driving, Mom in the front passenger, me (the oldest) and my youngest sister in the middle seat, my other sister and baby brother in the back (and like you, no seatbelts)...anyway, we stopped for dinner, and then everybody piled back into the car...The sister next to me didn't realize it right away, but her blanket got stuck in to door. We took off, and about the time Dad got to cruising speed, sister wanted to cover with her blanket, which of course she couldn't do cause it was stuck in the door. So, what does she do driving down the interstate at 65 MPH...OPENS THE DOOR!!! Gosh at the scrambling that went on in that car...Mom fairly flew over the front seat, I grabbed sis' foot and held on for all I was worth, and the sister in the back grabbed sis's hair and pulled as hard as she could. Little sis was screaming and yelling (mostly cause her head hurt from the other sister pulling her hair), and finally Dad got the car pulled over and stopped.

We all got out for a minute, and little sis says "What was that all about? All I wanted was to lay down..."

I was only 7 at the time, sister in the back was 6, and sister trying to get out the door only 3. Sort of funny now thinking back, but of course at the time it was about an hour before Dad could start driving again..

Any my BEST childhood memories??? Playing cowboys and indians with the kids in our neighborhood, roller skating, sitting on the porch with grandma waving at all the cars going by, and pretending our mini-bike was a horse that I was riding through "The Big Valley" with Heath  had just a bit of a crush on him...
