Hello all!

Lily's hen, Lucy has hatched two chicks. She had twelve eggs in total but one disappeared (she probably ate it!). She's still sitting on the other nine but I don't think there's much chance as the chicks hatched Monday. However, Mummy and chicks have all eaten and drunk so I'll leave her another day then take the rest of the eggs away so she can get on with rearing the chicks she's got. Not a great result but my neighbour, who gave me the eggs (we don't have a cockerel) said their cockerel wasn't very 'puissant' which is French for, literally, powerful but you get what she means! :lol:

LOL. Terri I live in Amish/farm country and I have had to get used to the 4H life philosophy that you eat your pets. It has been very hard at times to see these kids marching around a ring so proud of their animals knowing they will be meat soon. And walk into the steak house and see that it has bought the prize winning animal at the youth fair. You look at your plate wondering if it is Cody's bull!!!

Oh, I know.
I grew up with farms around.
We would go up there and get eggs/milk.
Once in a while, there was the man there that used to slaughter the cows and chickens. YUCK!!!

Yes it was hard at first - especially with the pigs we had which I got quite attached too. BUT I'd much rather eat our own meat that I know has lived well, eaten well and died as painlessly and quickly as possible, on our land without the trauma of the trip to the abbatoir!

Hans kills our chickens and I pluck and butcher them. We had a neighbour who is a retired butcher to do the pigs though. Promise we won't do any killing while you're here though Terri! When I was veggie a few years ago, it was a protest against intensive farming methods. Now I'm happy that we eat meat that we've either reared ourselves or that Hans has shot; I know everyone doesn't have the opportunity to live like this, or the inclination but I'm happy that I can eat meat - which I love - but not sacrifice my principles. My kids are growing up thinking it's normal and it's great that they see where their food comes from. They didn't actually see the pigs being killed - they were at school - but were home in time to see the carcasses being split. They were just interested - not upset or grossed out at all!

We grew up raising our own meat, pig, cow, and chicken so glad that you can still live that way. people need to know meat doesn't just appear in the store all nicely cut and packed.


You're right , a rooster is good for only 2 things. and I think your neighbor needs a new "cockerl" :wink: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Cute chicks!! We have them popp'n over here too:)And, yes, 4H projects in the making!LOL The pediatrician told me years ago that whatever I was doing I was doing something right for the kids they see are huge along w/shoe sizes they have never seen before. And, they really don't know what is the cause of it. But, told me that my kids were growing at the healthy rate and slow and normal. And whatever I am doing, keep it up!That these kids are maxing out in size at 14! One may not know for many years, but, we do raise our own chickens, crops and cows. All I know are pesticide free and no steriods in my cow:)All things that I do think matters. The first time I cooked a real fresh chicken I thought something was wrong for the grease was yellow!!Who knew that was normal and what it should look like:)LOL That is why we eat our projects...like k, we know what is in them:0)Well, sorta...we do 'free roam' and I really don't want to know everything that is in them:)But, do know it is supp to be that way-SKeat
