I found out quite a few years ago that I am allergic to penicillin. Ok, no big deal, there are plenty of other antibiotics that I can take, right? Well, now I get to add another allergy to my list.... cephalosporin (another antibiotic) .... yep yep...good times, good times....
Ok, thanks for letting me vent! It's just frustrating!

I'm allergic to all the Quinalone antibiotics. I don't even remember all the names now. Thankfully, I don't have not had to take any antibiotics in a few years. Hopefully, drugist will catch & prevent future problems.

I am allergic to penicillan, erythramiacin, tetnus shots, the chicken pox vaccine....and that is really just the beginning. I just try not to take any kind of drug if I don't really have to.

Leota 08-18-2010 02:29 PM

I am allergic to penicillan and all drugs in that class, vistril, zethromicin and all drugs in that class, and all artificial sweetners

Windwalker 08-18-2010 02:32 PM

My husband has the penicillin allergy. And I have to fight with the medical profession all the time. They always want to try a third generation of it. One time he nearly stopped breathing and I actually said "I told you so".

DON"T EVER TAKE KEFLEX, the entire family is allergic to pennicillin so the doc gave my son Keflex, they said they worst that could happen to him was MAYBE a rash. When he went into shock laid in the fetal position and his gums swelled that you couln't see the teeth in his mouth they knew never to give him anything in that family. This happened when he was 3 he is now 27 and NEVER has been on a antibiotic again.

So sorry to hear about your allergies. My DH has a lot of them he has to deal with every day.

I'm allergic to helium! Try having a wonderful party, grand opening, baby shower etc and NOT being able to have balloons!

donnajean 08-18-2010 02:40 PM

I'm also allergic to artificial sweeteners as well as the antibiotics.

Sorry to hear about your drug allergies. My DH can only take septra and that don't work half the time. I have a long list of allergies for the kids too.

maryb119 08-18-2010 03:38 PM

I am alergic to Penicillin and cephalosporins both. My doctor said the reason is that penicillin is a natural drug and cephalosporins are a synthetic version of penicillin. When you are alergic to penicillin, there is a 25% cross over rate for people to be alergic to both of them. I am also alergic to sulfa and tetracycline........there goes the cheap antibiotics. I wear a bracelet at all times. Penicillin is life threatening for me.

So sorry to read about your allergies! I am thankful that I'm not allergic to meds. Well Ceclor makes me get a rash but that is it. I have enough allergy problems without being allergic to meds also! LOL You take care!

Aw, Hugs!!!!!!!!!!

I too am allergic to Penicillin. I take immune suppressants, and whilst I don't seem to get colds or flu, I am inclined to get sinus/throat infections and cuts take forever and a day to heal. So it is a bit of a pain...I have taken Bactrim and Rulide without too many problems, if you Google it you may find it's alternate name for your country.

I'm allergic to a whole bunch of stuff. I try real hard to not ever take anti-biotics. I'm allergic to just to many of them. I'm also allergic to opiates so no pain relivers either.

I never had any allergy to meds until about 6 years ago when the Dr. thought I'd developed cellulitis at the site of a very nasty bruise sustained in a fall in the woods when my shin hit a rock or a limb on the ground. It evolved into a huge hemotoma and my leg was black from knee to toes. She gave me a shot of Rocephin because it stays in your system for 48 hours or more and is so well tolerated by geriatric patients. Within less than two minutes I staggered out of the treatment room in full anaphylactic shock and when I tried to call for help I couldn't breath in enough air with which to use my voice. Fortunately the Dr. came out of the adjoining treatment room, took one look at me, grabbed me and started shouting orders to whoever was within hearing. After three days in the ICU an orthopedic surgeon removed the monster hemotoma and after four days of culture it was negative for a single microbe. However they all said that bacteria like nothing better than dried blood as a culture so the surgery wasn't all for nothing. The leg took about six weeks to heal. A nurse friend tells me that in her 40 year career, mostly in geriatric nursing she has injected "gallons of the stuff" and never saw a negative reaction. I now wear the bracelet, have one on my key chain and a sticker in the window of my car. That drug is in the cephlasporin class so I can't take any of them.

After using Celebrex from the day it hit the market for osteo arthritis, three years ago I developed hives all over my body and scratched myself bloody and couldn't sleep for the itching. It took the dermatologist quite a while to figure it out since so many meds in my list had been introduced after that. It was, unfortunately, the one drug that meant the most for my quality of life. Can't take any of the over the counter anti-inflammatories as they all make me itch. I just take excedrin once or twice a day and make sure I get my exercise. What a bother.

Taking meds is like wearing a girdle, the problem simply appears as another problem which may be worse than the first one. An old Alka Seltzer ad used to say "Why trade a headache for an upset stomach?"

My mom and grandmother (mom's side) are/were both allergic to penicillin, as well as sulfa. I have never had any sulfa drugs, but something tells me I'm probably allergic to that as well. I was a bit surprised that the doctor gave me the cephalosporin, because of the penicillin allergy, and because I'm pregnant. Yep.... I don't get to use the cheap antibiotics either! I'm glad I have good insurance.....
