It was the last straw, and a total mutiny on the part of the dishwasher. It knew we were getting suspicious of the many times it failed to do what we considered an adequate job of cleaning our dirty dishes... so it got even. It started to let the water in... and never stopped. Luckily the water just ran across the kitchen floor and down the steps to the cellar, where there's a drain just a few feet away.

We had to turn off the water to the whole house, just to get it to stop gushing. The shut-off valve was underneath the dishwasher, so we had to pull it out to gain access to that.

But this was an unforgiveable act of treason.

So Dishwasher has been hauled out of the house.

And now I'm wondering...

Is it actually a GOOD thing that we are without a dishwasher? On the (very) plus side of things... now, as soon as dinner is over, the kids will have to get right on the dishwashing... instead of saying "I'll load the dishwasher later" (which usually meant SO late that they went to bed before the dishes were ready to unload). So we can work on reducing procrastination.

Those of you who have had a dishwasher break, did any good come out of it? Did you eventually decide to replace it? Or just do without?

DD has already said that now, if she only dirties a few dishes for lunch, she's going to just wash them out right away. Which is already better than just piling them all up in the sink for someone else to do!

oh gosh, when living in an upstairs apartment , mine started filling and kept on filling. i went to bed and the neighbor below me came up very upset at the water coming into his kitchen.
I could do without a dish washer myself. my hubby likes having one. so either way.

we have one.. but with just the two of us now.. we rarely use it.. ( I store tupperware , a can of crisco , etc in it...it simply scares the cats to bad (it's an older model))
We dont dirty the entire kitchen when we cook, so most of the dishes are done by the time we sit down to dinner.

Before my grandkids moved, I always told people I had 3 dishwashers!

I like to clean and wash as I cook. Then I wash the pans before I serve. So when we are finished eating, it is just easier to go ahead and wash them by hand and be done. I ALWAYS despised having to unload the dishwasher. I hate to have dishes on my cabinet or in the sink so as soon as something appears there, it gets washed. Now I see that I really would not need a dishwasher. I have used ours once in over a year.

Just me and my husband, no need for one.

If the dish washer broke down here It would be utterly horrid it would mean I'm in the hospital  I had one in a house we rented I never seen the sense in it and it became a place to hide dirty dishes if unexpected company appeared

I only use ours a few times a week. So I could live without one.

The one appliance I could live without! Of course, it is only my DH and I. Try to use it one day a week to keep it lubricated and not let it start to dry out. If I don't use it for several days, it will leak a little water across the kitchen floor. As far as saving on water, ours runs forever on a light wash load and it is very noisy. I'm happy to wash dishes by hand.

Had one and now by choice don't. Much better without....as time goes on you will reap all types of reasons as to why there is not a replacement for the one that broke. congrats.
