Dog is having a problem with the noise from the sewing machine.

I hope someone has an idea what is going on with my dog.. He used to be very nice, and calm when I sewed.. he would either nap in the dog house, or near me somewhere.. The last couple of days have been a problem.. When I start to sew, he starts barking at me to stop, or whines.. At first I thought he wanted to go out, but that wasn't the problem.. I made him go out of the room, and sit, and think.. but I could see that he was upset.. I really want to enjoy his company, and continue sewing.. I'm not home that much, and he is at my mom's during the day..

Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer to the rescue. He's not getting enough exercise? Watch as many shows and read his books. I learned A LOT and I always had dogs for most of my 63 years. Found out I didn't know enough!

winia 06-20-2012 03:36 AM

My guess? Ear problem of some kind. A trip to the vet is in order.

qwkslver 06-20-2012 03:48 AM

That is what I would think too. He might have an ear infection of some sort.

I agree. The sound of the motor may be hurting his ears for some reason

PaperPrincess 06-20-2012 03:56 AM

Or maybe there is something starting to go wrong with your machine motor producing a high pitched whine. Too high for our ears, but not for his?

barri1 06-20-2012 10:00 AM

I don't think it's a discipline problem, as he is a good guy, and never used to have a problem with me doing anything. He gets a lot of exercise, as he hangs out chasing balls with a golden doodle.. I think I'll look in his ears.. and figure it out.. He has bad allergies, and was just in the hospital with asthma..

I would take him to his vet.

Quilt Novice 06-20-2012 11:45 AM

Check your machine, maybe the wiring. Dogs can also smell a problem. I agree with him seeing the vet. I hope everything is okay.

Quilt Novice 06-20-2012 11:48 AM

Another thing, maybe its something else in the room making a noise or something. Is there anything new in your sewing space that he might not like?

nativetexan 06-20-2012 01:10 PM

Hmmm, are you sure there is nothing wrong with your sewing machine? or anything going wrong electrically? Dogs are very sensitive to things we aren't. I'd take a look around.

barri1 06-20-2012 04:26 PM

Love the idea of looking into the wiring in the machine, as it is a 1926 singer 66.. It's cheaper than taking him to the vet.. I was having a problem with two broken needles.. I also looked in his ears.. One looks like it has potential for an infection.. Will know in a few after I clean them out, and look inside.. I feel like screaming, as I am leaving early Fri for 1 1/2 weeks.. and am working late tomorrow..

I think the sound is hurting his ears. My granddog was here for the weekend and she has asthma and gets that like horking cough and then keeps shaking her head and her ears are flopping around and I assume it's due to allergies since she had been outside. She looks funny but I feel bad for her because you can't seem to do much for her. Maybe the Vet can help. Good luck and happy dog and sewing. Sue

Does he have problems in other "noisy" situations? What happens if you turn on a fan or the vacuum cleaner? If he does the same thing with the vacuum, I would suggest the vet. If it only happens with your sewing machine, maybe you should have the machine checked.

I was thinking the same thing as the princess. Dogs know when you have an illness, maybe he is hearing something going on in your machine. I'd have it checked out, if he has already been checked by the vet.

I'd at least give me vet a call & see what's what. Keep up posted...

barri1 06-21-2012 02:23 AM

His ears look fine, but I'm still inclined to think that the machine has a new noise that is bothering him.. Will have someone run him over to the vet's anyway..
As for the vacuum, steam mop, or anything else that makes noise.. He attacks them.. He thinks that they are going to get him.. He's a very timid dog unless he thinks they are going to hurt us.. He's very protective..

Has anyone watched the newest dog training show called Dogs in the City. It was on last night and my dog loves the program and will watch it through to the end. I'm just hoping he doesn't pick up bad habits from the dogs the man comes to train.

I like his method better then Cesar Milan because he's very gentle with them, no rough tugs, etc. and the dogs respond very quickly.

RugosaB 06-21-2012 06:25 AM

It's not his ears then? So it must be the noise.
Is there anything at your mom's that makes a noise and something bad happened to him while it was making noise? (Bad to him, not necessarily bad to us)
What about at the vet's?

When you mentioned him attacking the vacuum, I thought of my Captain, he does the same thing when he hears the noise. We have a central vac, so the noise is in the basement, so we tend to run it when he's outside. In the winter, I try to put him in another room. However, I never coddle him or say in a whiny voice, Poor thing, big bad sweeper won't get you. Dogs take that type of behavior as meaning there is something to be afraid of, even the person I love the most is scared. Some dogs will attack it to protect the person, some will run in fear.
Just treat your sewing like you're not afraid of it, and sort of ignore him
If he's acting scared in another room, he needs a confidence booster. Learning something, whether it's sit, down, whatever, something that you can demonstrate how proud you are. Eventually, he will too.

It's funny, we keep the vacuum attachment in a closet, with other things, and whenever the door is opened, Captain gets worried.

Nina Baker 06-21-2012 07:21 AM

Maybe he is missing you, since you say you are not home much. Extra attention needed, maybe. The other ideas should be looked into also.'

Peckish 06-21-2012 07:28 AM

Lol the vacuum stories make me chuckle. My 100 pound black lab, Zeus, LOVES the vacuum. When I turn it on he comes over and insists that I vacuum him.

judykay 06-21-2012 07:32 AM

Keep us posted, animals are smart & can sense things.

carolynjo 06-21-2012 03:13 PM

Good luck, Sherlock! Sounds like maybe an ear problem.

barri1 06-21-2012 05:42 PM

Yup.. I'm a good mom.. Took the guy to the vet.. He has a bilateral otitis media.. and I had to leave him there so they can clean them out, and have his teeth cleaned... My brother will pick him up tomorrow.. At first the vet thought he didn't want me to sew.. but when I explained that he might be hearing something that I wasn't, he thought twice.. He needed his vaccines anyway.. Now I feel guilty as crap.. I'm heading to LA for ten days.. Just think.. He could've been suffering for nothing.. If he still has a fit while I'm sewing, he's going to get drop kicked... big time

I like this new guy, too, tho I also like Cesar. This guy has a more laid-back attitude. I hope the show lasts! I was so mad when Nat Geo cancelled Dog Town! And Rescue Ink! And Last Chance Highway! Yes, I like dog shows.

No, you're not a bad dog mommy. You took him to the vet AND you're doing what the vet says. My cousin is a vet & he said getting people to bring their pets isn't the problem. Getting them to agree to the treatment is the hang up. I hope your little guy is feeling 100% in no time flat & you & he can sew to your heart's content!

I did watch it. I did like it too.. Never been a CM fan.. Know too much about the behind the scenes ...
I would also say have a vet check his ears he may have something going on that is not noticeable to us. Their ear canals are very long. If he didn't do it before and is doing it now something is going on.. Of course checking the machine isn't a bad idea either.

damaquilts 06-22-2012 04:01 AM

Opps should have read all the way through. Glad you found out. Don't be surprised if he still reacts for a bit . But it will go away eventually

Amythyst02 06-22-2012 04:51 AM

I am so glad you took him to the vet, and hopefully when you return he will be back to his old self, laying next to you while you sew.

Yes I agree t in order. My dog Tippy became allergic to grain at 2 years old. That caused her ears to infect .

Good for you!! So glad to hear you took him to the vet, I too had immediately suspected an ear problem. Bear in mind though that it could take a while for it to clear up ... so don't be in a rush to practice drop kicking :)

barri1 06-23-2012 08:31 PM

Socrates has had multiple ear infections throughout his seven years.. He has allergies, and asthma.. Now that I think of it.. He's a pain in the behind.. but a really good guy.. and I love him to pieces.. I got to talk to him while I'm away, and he is in the best of hands.. My mom is cuddling him.. He might get drop kicked when I get back if he continues fighting my sewing..
As for Cesar Milan..I disagree 100% with his methods..
Barri..

Me too.....our Malamute/Staffy Luca sits beside the Dyson everytime it's out. He pushes against me as soon as I turn it on....have to vacuum the dog before the floors get done:).

Dakota Rose 06-23-2012 09:45 PM

If he still reacts when his ears get cleared up you might try one of those new vest like things that make dogs feel secured when they are scared. They use it when dogs don't like loud noises like thunder or household noises. Haven't tried it but have heard good things about it. Wish it had been invented years ago. Our baby loved to be vacuumed but tore the screed door off if she was outside when it thundered.

Thunder shirts!! I have read about them and have a friend who is a trainer , who swears by them for some dogs. Nothing works for every body...
And Barri 1...

barri1 06-24-2012 06:08 AM

We have the Thunder shirt. I bought it when it first came out, as my guy is a chicken, and afraid of thunder.. and terryfied about being left alone (spoiled).. It didn't work.. He shakes like a leaf.. I do okay with knocking him out with Benadryl.. I'm not concerned about him fighting the vacuum, as I use a canister that doesn't have brushes.. I also can send him out of the room.. He listens.. but creeps back in with a sad look on him face.. He behaves after..
