Grabbed an orange sharpie to write something and clumsy me dropped it on my purple blouse :-(. Luckily, it's cow appreciation day (ie, dress like cow, get free chicken from chick-fil-a) and I dressed like a cow for free breakfast. So I took my spots (black construction paper safety pinned to shirt) off my white blouse. Oh well, at least I don't have to walk around with a large orange spot on my shirt all day. Any suggestions on what I can try to save the blouse? It's a cotton/spandex mix, so cutting it up for quilt squares is not an option :-(. If I can't get it out, I may try making a doll dress or something out of it.

Sharpies are tough.

Maybe Goof-off or whatever that stuff is called. I used it on my husband's jeans after we used oil based stain on the fence. Took about 3 days of soaking, rinsing with a hose and repeating until I finally washed the jeans about 3 times in the washer. They came out looking almost new.

Can you put a small patch over it? Or wear the shirt with Overalls. :)

nativetexan 07-08-2011 06:56 AM

hmmm, oxy clean maybe. if all else fails, try the dry cleaners too. good luck.

Glassquilt 07-08-2011 07:01 AM

I've used rubbing alcohol to remove black sharpie.
Drop the orange marker on the rest of you blouse so it look intentional? ;)

Yikes! Found these websites for you:

Thanks for the suggestions. Goof-off is sold at Meijer, which is on my way home from work. I'll run in there and pick that and some oxy clean up and work on it over the weekend. It was my favorite purple blouse, but I only paid a few dollars for it at Good Will, so I'm not spending the $ at the dry cleaners :-(. I will try the stain remover products though.

ETA: found some rubbing alcohol at work and have been trying that. But the container's about empty. I know I've got some of that at home that I can try.

I have recently discovered liquid Oxiclean at Walmart. Like it *much* better than the powder. If using Oxiclean, I would definitely use the liquid or gel version.

Another thing, when you get home, don't put the blouse in the dryer until you think the stain is gone or at least lightened up. The heat of the dryer will set the stain.

Might be worth a try to use nail polish remover on it but not sure if it will damage the color of the fabric.

leaha 07-08-2011 09:05 AM

hair spray to get rid of ink

eastermarie 07-08-2011 09:19 AM

If the nail polish remover doesn't work (please test in an inside seam first), you might try lighter fluid. It removes a lot of stains. The dry cleaners use it a lot to remove stains and then clean the garments.

AgapeStitches 07-08-2011 09:56 AM

I use the Duggar Family's laundry detergent receipe and it removed black sharpie from my white blouse (cotton/spandex like yours).

I got red sharpie out of my off-white carpet with a product called Awesome. I got it at Dollar General.

Yes, Hair spray to get rid of any ink, anywhere, before it is in the dryer.

Hydrogen peroxide, full strength will take out alot of stains--blood, spaghetti sauce, ketsup, mustard-- out of any fabric. No, it does not bleach out the color. Can be used on jeans without worry. Do this before you wash.

Also, try Dawn hand dish washing soap. apply full strength to area rub gently into the stain. allow to dry some, then wash.?good luck.:)

patski 07-08-2011 11:28 AM

try a Mr Clean sponge, its' like a magic eraser, just wet it and rub

craftybear 07-08-2011 12:33 PM

Awesome cleaner from the dollar tree store

sandyo 07-08-2011 12:41 PM

try dry erase board cleaner it works for sharpies at times.

Kimkankwilt 07-08-2011 01:58 PM

zout...it works pretty well on most stains.

joyce888 07-09-2011 04:25 AM

Hair spray has always worked for me.

suesembroidery 07-09-2011 04:26 AM

Hair spray. It will spread when you spray it, but don't worry, put it in the wash. Check it after it is washed, if some remain, do it again until gone. Don't dry until the stain is out. An ink pen broke in a new shirt of my DH once and it took several washing, but came out. I put pens in my pocket all the time and the marks come out and my uniform tops are still good for work. Many of them have been washed and dryed several times before I get to them. Good luck, it really works.

Hen3rietta 07-09-2011 04:34 AM

WD-40 works for me at getting Sharpie writing off of other things. If all else fails....

vickimc 07-09-2011 05:51 AM

call the company. there are ways to get it off. a friend had some get on a white quilt and they helped her get it off. thank goodness.

grannypat7925 07-09-2011 05:59 AM

Goo Gone or Oxyclean. One or the other ought to do it.

Hair spray absolutely. I.m surrounded by a family of artists and I've used it many many times.

I like the ''more marks' idea I now use water-based markers from the Crayon brand

:-)

Rann 07-09-2011 06:55 AM

I use Zout on everything but have never had a Sharpie accident'

writerwomen 07-09-2011 07:05 AM

MR Clean erasers taike it off of other surfaces- sharpie is not the permanent marker it used to be

uffda 07-09-2011 08:54 AM

I used "Simple Green" to get magic marker out of a shirt. Worked like a charm

kathidahl 07-09-2011 09:14 AM

Hairspray...

PMY in QCA-IL 07-09-2011 09:57 AM

I'd try rubbing alcohol - it removes Sharpie marks from any plastics, may work on your shirt, but be sure to use the 91% solution of rubbing alcohol, not the weaker solution that is also on the market.

Search for clip art, and finish the picture. Just remember that sharpies can bleed, and allow for it. Think 'embroidery look'? Fabric tattoo? Sharpies come in about 24 colors. I once used a fat red one to change the color of a print to get it to mach something else. It is in a quilt, and the color hasn't faded. If life gives you lemons, get creative.

Try rubbing alcohol. It works on a lot of strange stains!

fishnlady 07-09-2011 06:28 PM

I don't know if this has been suggested yet or not but anytime I want to get sharpie out of anything I use WD40 and rub it in really good. Then wash it.

zzzGP 07-09-2011 09:58 PM

I have had better results using denatured alcohol which doesn't have water in it. Works on most things but I'm not sure about fabric.

I think I'll do a test on some fabric and see how it does.
