Guess what followed my dog home?
2 Attachment(s)
While my DH was walking our rescue dog, Charlie ( rhodesian ridgeback and pitbull mix) both came across a puppy ( any guess?) who followed them home.
Puppy has a collar but not tags. Once home, we leashed the puppy and walked around the neighborhood making inquiries to each person we met and rang the door bell of a home where he was found. No one answered despite 3 cars in the driveway- maybe the home owners thought we were selling something. Right now, the puppy is enjoying himself in our backyard. Quiet as a church mouse. I have no idea what mix he is , maybe someone on the board does. He is smart as a whip. We have to make a decision- call animal control and bring him to the pound or keep him for a few days and see if we can locate owner by posting info. I hate to think of him being in a cage but just don't know if he will fit in. Oh well, our rescue dog paid it forward. |
He is adorable....
|
He is really cute.

In our city, if you find a lost pet, animal care & control will give you the option of keeping the animal during the time that the animal is deemed a lost pet (3 business days). After 3 days if no one claims the animal, ACC will evaluate it to see if it is adoptable or gives you the option of keeping it if you choose. It would be helpful if you can see f the little guy has a microchip. This can be done free of charge at any vets office, and animal care & control. During the hours that those 2 are closed, an emergency vet hospital will check it free of charge.
He is cute!!!! |
If I lived closer I would take him.
|
How kind of you and Charlie(my golden retriever's name) to take care of this sweetie! Hope someone will step forward and claim him. Maybe they are hunting for him.
|
He is adorable. I hope you decide he fits in....I would keep him for sure!
|
The little guy hasn't been fixed nor can we find an indication of a chip. My DH thinks the puppy was abandoned, which is a common practice in the city I live in. My DH is retired and is home all day. He states he has never seen this puppy in the neigh hood on his x5 daily walks.
I think we'll keep him overnight and call animal control in the morning and see if anyone called in a lost dog. The animal service division is only open 4 days a week where we live. If there is an animal emergency then we have to call the police. He is not an emergency at this time. |
Oh a cute dog followed me on my walk home from high school. My Mother looked in the lost and found ads and it turned out he belonged to someone a few streets away. he was used to being on a leash and walked ahead of me all the way home. also he was only used for stud services. not a pet. I still wish we had kept him!
|
keep him for now, his days will be numbered t a shelter
|
Our Humane Society? keeps dogs for 1 week, sometimes. If not adopted out or claimed they are put down. Doesn't seem very humane to me. We sometimes get dropped off pets here. People love puppies, then discover they require food and care.

I think the lost pup is fitting in. He and Charlie are getting along quite well as if he and Charlie was best buds. After chasing each other, Charlie allowed the pup to drink water first. DH wen around neighborhood again, ringing doorbells, and asking people. So far no one is claiming him or has ever seen the pup before.

I think he has Border Collie in him. I do not think he is full blood but looks to me as a Border Collie mix. They are wonderful dogs and you will be hard press to find a smarter dog then a BC. Wishing you and the stray the very best he sure looks cute and smart

Have you posted Lost Dog signs? Often dogs wander (run) miles from their home, so he might not belong to anyone in your neighbors . If the people are looking for him, they will be calling shelters, vets, and animal control. He looks like a mix of Shepherd (face coloring) , boxer (head shape, body color) and terrier (small feet) but that's just a wild guess. I hope you find his family or that he finds a new family with you:0) We tried keeping a second dog who needed us (she was 14 years old and her owner had died, the retired daughter couldn't keep her). We had Brownie for 7 months until Valentine's Day of last year when I had no choice but to put her down because she was failing miserably and my hubby was in the hospital with life-threatening issues. Our golden (a rescue dog) didn't like playing second fiddle; his normally good behavior became a problem for 7 months and showed me that not all dogs who are great alone can give up their throne.
Here's praying that signs work wonders. LOL |
Oops! Totally forget what I said in the ID of the breed. I was looking at the first picture of Charile (the aerial view where his face doesn't look as much pit as boxer/shep to me). Hahaha. Little red dog looks like it could be an Aussie/border/setter mix. Aussie eyes, border body/face, setter or red golden retriever coloring. Definitely a herding breed, all high energy, so I'll bet dollars to donuts he has run from quite a distance. Those dogs seem to know no bounds. We had a border once run 3 miles away and was taken to animal control a half hour away. She was missing for an agonizing 3 days!
I'm glad to hear new boy is fitting in well so far, but I know that breed needs a LOT of attention, work to stay busy or else their intelligence drives them nuts. Our next door neighbor has 2 Aussies and a border. The border never shuts up. I hope your newcomer behaves more like a quiet collie or shepherd. |
We have posted signs for dog found. If someone calls we will ask for description. To or row will call around to various animal control offices they are the only ones that manage shelters. DH will bring him to a vet tomorrow and verify if there is a chip. He thinks the dog was abandoned. The county has a high rate of puppy mills and breeders for dog fights - it's quite common for people to abandon dogs on the highway or in a neighborhood away from the mill. Very sad. The new pup does not bark at all. Even when he and Charlie chase each other around the yard.

Well, I would have a hard time NOT keeping such a dog. He's smart, quiet, gets along with your dog, apparently healthy, and homeless. Keep us posted!

Just today I went to the Worcester Petrockfest. It is a annual function to raise money for shelters, foster care for dogs and hopefully provide adoptions for loving dogs needing homes. There are so many! It is heartbreaking. I hope if the pup doesn't get claimed that you might be able to provide a forever home . He looks like a beautiful pup

I have a pit/lab mix. Extremely affectionate. I am a single woman but I have thought about getting a companion dog for him. He is a love but he is very high energy and loves other dogs. When I see your Charlie with the "stray" I can't help but think it is a great match. Please let us know how it all turns out.

I agree, he looks at least partially part border collie. I have a red and white BC, looks a lot like this guy.
My BC is a great dog. Quite smart. |
First morning - came downstairs for my first cup of coffee.before getting ready for work.and found slider open. Heard snoring, saw dog toys strewn across the floor of the den. There was my DH sleeping on the sofa and the pup playing on the floor. DH woke up and said , oh he's been out several times and he's been having fun with the toys.
DH never made it to bed last night. Today will call around different animal services. I do hope we can reunite the pup to the owner and bring some happiness. DH still insists the pup was abandoned. I'll let you all know how this unfolds when I return from work today. Thanks |
I thought border collies were black and white, only color I have seen. I didn't know which dog was the found one. Maybe some Irish Setter, they are red. He is darling. Hiking his leg could be a sign he needs to be neutered. If it isn't done soon it will become a habit. You both have a wonderful heart to keep him if you can't find his home.

The little guy looks just like my Sophie, she is from a yellow Lab Mom and a Corgie daddy. She does not have the docked tail but her face looks exactly like your puppy. Her color is about the same as well, she is now 14 months old and a great friend and wrestling buddy for 6 year old full chocolate Lab Ben. Ben was a neighborhood rescue in 2009 and he now is like a puppy with Sophie but still has lots of issues from his life before.
The last photo you posted of them looks like they had been having a fun time, lots of tongue and in need of a break. I am thinking Charlie votes for him to stay so he can have someone to play with. |
So cute, I would keep him.
|
Please either take him to a vet or the SPCA to see if he has been "chipped". He may be carrying the information you need to get him back to his owner. Even if you don't want to turn him over to the SPCA, at least call them to tell them you have found this puppy in case someone has called them to report him missing. I volunteer at our local SPCA and I know they do everything they can to return a dog to its owner.

No, Border Collie's are not only black and white. They can also be red. They can have lope ears, prick ears also smooth coat or rough coat. The more that I look at her I really think she has Border Collie and the body and legs speak corgi, but the tail throws me and this is just my thoughts. She is sure sweet looking.

Aussie tail?

handsome fellas. lil one looks like a shepard in the face and ears or collie. both are smart breeds. but looks like a setter or retriever in his coat
|
All he wants is to be loved.
|
Awww how precious.. Maybe call a no kill shelter ? Or just adopt him seems like he likes you already !
|
My feelings are .......he followed youhomefor a reason....he is meant to be yours.....a kitten did the same to me a few yrs ago....I, like you, did all I could to find her "owner" to no avail......had two cats already, but decided to keep her and she has been a joy to me since.....she knew before I did that I was her " owner" or maybe it was the other way around!
|
charlie is saying keep keep. i am the one that brought him home. they look like they get along. i would keep.charlie thinks so too...

One last post. You can try Pet Harbor. It is online and is for lost and found pets also. http://www.petharbor.com/ But do have him checked for a chip, just in case.
|
He looks sweet and smart. And what a beautiful coat. I would love it if my hair were that color! He deserves a good home with someone who loves him. Thanks for taking him in.
|
I believe there is a rescue resource for lost pets called www.findtoto.com. I hope that's the right url but they have dogs who are lost all over the country and also those finding dogs to try and get the pet to their home.
I too would not take him to a shelter. I think 7 days is all they keep them in most states unless you can find a no-kill shelter. |
If you have to take him to a shelter, please try to find a no-kill one.
|
A few years ago a man took his Daughter's black lab to the humane society, because she wouldn't take care of it. He changed his mind and went back to get him. Only 20 minutes later and they had already put him down. They said they get lots of them and can't adopt them. It was on our news for several days. Maybe some keep them longer, but not here.
