Help! My oven lightbulb broke-off. Any Ideas?
Today I cleaned my oven and the light bulb went out. When I unscrewed the bulb the base stayed in the socket and the glass part came out. I have tried the potato fix, it didn't even loosen the bulb base. Now I have a chunk of potato stuck in the bulb base. Any ideas out there? I'm afraid to make the whole thing worse! Help if you know what to do!!!

My thought is unplug the stove ugg I know!! and use pliers to get the rest of the bulb out.

If it's electric unplug it. I was gonna suggest the potato thing but you're ahead of me. Tweezers? Nail file? Sorry.
|
Do not do it while it is plugged in I got a shock off the Christmas tree trying to replace a bulb I broke changing it I am afraid the stove may be a worse shock!!

Thanks! My oven is electric but it seems to be hard-wired, no plug. I will try tomorrow with the circuit breaker turned off. I do have little pliers that will fit.
|
I agree with Donna, but make sure the circuit is off.
|
Please be careful. I hope you can fix it. Good luck.

Electricity is not something I fool with myself, I'd call a repairman. If you are going to try, make sure the circuit is turned off. Sometimes because a stove draws a lot of power it has it's own switch. Double check before doing anything by trying to turn on an element. If you are going to try pliers, make sure they are the ones with the rubber coated handles. Yiles, this makes me nervous!

There is a tool, sorta like plyers that fits into the socket, you squese and it fits tight into the socket. (Instead of it squeezing in like a plyer, it spreads outward thus fitting tight inside the broken bulb.) while squeezing, unscrew the broken bulb end. Wala! And yes, make sure there is no electricity present.

I'd make sure the circuit breaker is off to the kitchen/stove area, unplug the stove completely and use a pair of pliers to get the rest out you can twist it out like you normally would I've had that happen to me a couple of months ago. You need to go easy on it or it will just collapse worse. If you don't feel comfortable about repairing an electric product please call a handy man I'd hate to hear you got hurt doing this.

Thanks all for the tips. I turned off all the circuit breakers and got it out with needle-nose pliers. That thing was tough! The new bulb works fine too.

You were more successful that I've been. I had l bulb do this in 2 ceiling fixtures. I tried the potato fix and just got potato stuck in the base. Then I tried the pliers and the base just crumbled on me. I guess I will have to call an electrician to fix them. I've had a lot of problems with bulbs blowing lately. I was buying Phillips brand at dollar store so they may be seconds. Very annoying. I'm going to start replacing all the bulbs in my house with the LED ones (not the curly ones...hate those.) but they are expensive so will have to do it slowly.

Hi
This has just happened to me and tried the pliers but it bent the end out of shape. I tried an old toothbrush head pushed in and it seemed to grip it and it came out. Thought I'd share if it can help someone else. Thanks for the tips :) |
We had a light bulb break-off in our kitchen chandelier, and hubby took a pair of needle-nose pliers, bent the metal base of the bulb inward, then unscrewed it using the same pliers.
|
some pliers have a rubber coating on the handles. always wondered why. [perhaps for this.
|
Replace with LED....wasn't there something posted here somewhere a while back about the danger to ones eyes from those?
