I have brought kittens into a household where a grown cat already lives, but never brought a grown cat, much less 2 grown cats, into a household where another grown cat lives.

Could those of you who have please give me suggestions. My cat is not aggressive but I'm sure he will take exception to intruders on his turf since he's been the only cat for 4 years. We have a dog but she's nearly 19 and could care less.

It's a temporary situation, at the most they will be here 6 months. They are indoor/outdoor cats, which mine is too.

hmmmm, most definately, very carefully! My daughter always has cats come and go and she says she keeps the boys apart, they always flex their muscles. But I've seen some fiesty gals, too. Good luck and wear gloves! Blessings, Ruth

Same as if it were a kitten. A cat is a cat no matter what age, to the other cat.

I had a cat, Gabby had been the only one for 12 years(RIP, baby girl, I lost her last year at 17), and my now hubby has two cats (7 years old).

We brought them to the house, introduced them with us present and let the howling and hissing begin. We let Gabby stay in our room for the most part (did not force her, it was her choice) and let the other cats get a feel for the house. Of course, we brought in another litter box because I did not want Gabby to reject hers.

They will fight, hiss, and act out but over time they will learn to get along or LOL, learn to get over it.

Good luck!

my girlfriend's husband passed away and their cat was home with him all the time. she missed him terribly but calmed down. then my friend went and bought a kitten. brought it home (a girl too) and they both got along right away. go figure!

My daughter moved into a house where there were already 2 grown cats. At first she kept Oreo in her room and the cats got to meet each other by sniffing under the door. Finally one day they got together and it was a little harsh at first, but nothing to worry about. They are now best friends.

We put the one cat in the bedroom and shut the door. They played footsie under the door for the better part of a week. When I let them be together, the older cat hissed and swung and the little cat. She swung back and connected on the nose and they were best friends ever after! Funny to watch.

Let them be. They'll set their "pecking" order and then be buds. Never heard of any killing each other. If they get too out of order for you have a spray bottle near by and spray.

Look around online - Slowly is the smartest. I know I've read about keeping them isolated in a room for a while (days at least) and then moving them into another room - letting the original cat go in and sniff around. That way he gets used to their scent for a while first. Then somehow so they can see each other.... I forget all the details. It sounds like a pain, but in the long run it could pay off.

I have a 'herd' of 5. When introducing new ones, I did it when I was home to supervise that things didn't get out of control (it never did). They worked it out themselves, and were on good terms after two or three days.

this is the best way to introduce them slowly. try to keep them seperated allowing them to sniff thru the door. You will tell when it will be a good time to physically introduce them (I always picked mine up and took them into the room-just to see the newbies) there will be growling and stuff and feelings of upset for the hierarchy has been changed. they will work the hierarchy out -nothing we can do about that- other than just give out alot of love to each one individually.
