My Dh says to me tonight..." I will make you a deal... if you hem my dress pants , I will let you use the leftovers for your quilting"... ha ha

Well sorry dear but black dress pant scraps don't make the best quilt scraps... I love that he tried but does anyone else think that mending is not like sewing... just doesn't seem as enjoyable somehow but I will do it because of all the things he does for me and because I am too frugal to pay someone to do something that I can do myself .

I hem my hubby's pants and am glad to do it! He is so darned good to me and hardly ever asks me to do anything. He can buy pants on sale at JCP. but they are always a couple of inches too long. I am so blessed to have this man. We have been married over sixty-one years and he just keeps getting better.

LOL- I do mending for my husband too. He's the fixer upper for just about everything else and I like that there is one area of technology where he bows to my superior ability :-))

I HATE hemming and will stall forever and ever. A year or more ago my DH and I went to WM and he bought a Singer so HE could hem his own pants LOL I still had to do them but the thought was there. He does hand sew as in darning. I can not darn to save my soul. He learned to sew by hand in the Army. He puts his own buttons on etc.

Mending is not like sewing to me either. I will do it.....eventually....but I put off hemming my own pants too! I would actually have some new clothes if I would just hem them:o.

I like the saying- asking a quilter to mend is like asking Picasso to paint your garage! That being said, I mend for my family. People ask me if I do alterations and I reply- if I can't think of a way to get out of it. And then I refer them to a lady that supports herself with sewing for others.

I used to make custom wedding gowns, formal wear and costumes. People would constantly ask me to mend stuff. Zippers in jeans was the most common asked for item. They would ask what to do, my reply was "throw them out, buy new ones and get the proper size so your belly doesn't bust your zipper". The other one was, people would bring me formal dresses that had already been worn and say they would wait to dry clean it AFTER I altered it. Really, you want me to work on your dirty clothes? Then they would be surprised when I said it must be cleaned before I touch anything. I hem and do alterations, BUT only if I want to. Which lately has been none.

My DH can sew but to me, using the machine for mending or sewing is really about the same. Just depends on the project as to what goes under the needle. My DH does so much for me, I don't mind doing a little in return. Once I helped him put a transmission into a "64" Chevy Nova. I said never again. He prefers to buy clothes he knows will fit.

No mending. It's just not fun. IMHO. I don't iron my DH's shirts, either. This is truly an equal opportunity household. And just so no one on here gets in a snit, I pay for my car's oil changes and detailing and so on. He does take it to put gas in it, but only because he likes to drive it. :thumbup:

That reminds me of when I was 13 and my dad said, "You're the artist in the family, YOU paint the porch."

I have a pile of mending to do. I'd rather quilt any day! Fortunately I can't remember the last time I had to hem pants, but long dresses rarely come in petite.
