I just about had a heart attack......I'm sitting here reading the post and I look up and there is my baby (kitty) Sammie, who truly is the devil in kitten fur and she has a sewing needle sticking out of her month. She was chewing on the thread. Thank goodness I saw it before it really got into her month. But what a scare. I know many of us have our furry quilt inspectors close by us when we are sewing.....this was just a reminder to keep needles with thread safely away after use.

I had a HUGE scare! We had just gotten a new kitten about 12 weeks old. I had been sewing the binding on a quilt, I got it finished about 10:00 one night. When I was done I stuck the needle with the bit of thread that was left into the spool of thread and put it with my sewing stuff. About 3:00am I got up to feed the baby and noticed that I had not put the lid on my sewing box I went over and noticed that the thread and needle were missing. I freaked out. I checked ever inch of the floor near my sewing box, searched every inch of the house could not find it anywhere. As soon as the vets office opened the next morning I called and took the kitten in for an xray because I just KNEW he had swallowed that needle and thread, but he hadn't. I came home and SEARCHED the house some more. NEVER did find the stupid thing. about a week later after searching every day for the needle and thread I realized that I had stitched the thread on with a lighter color thread than I had quilted it in and I had been looking at the quilting thread the whole time, the needle and thread were still in the thread that I had actually stitched the binding on with! LOL

Don't beat yourself up about it, just make it a lesson learned!
Also everyone with cats be careful about stings that you clip off while sewing. If a cat plays with and swallows them they can cause an obstruction and the kitty runs the risk of needing surgery to remove it even though there is no needle attached.

Many, many years ago one of my Grandma's cats swallowed a needle. She saw some thread coming out the "end" and gently pulled and the needle was still attached!!! Amazing that nothing bad happened to him!

Yikes, thank goodness dachshunds don't eat needles. He only likes chicken and beef. You guys be careful with those fur babies.

Oh wow! Glad you caught her! We have a cat that's a troublemaker, too. Only Dasher likes to sit by my sewing machine, pull the thread out of the machine....and watch me! AND he likes to pick up the pins off the magnetic pincushion and drop them to the floor. He watches each one to make sure it hits the floor. I've had to ban him from the craft room. I've been trying to talking DH into putting a screen door on the doorway!! LOL :mrgreen:

Wowsers! That could have turned out badly -- I'm glad you caught it before something awful happened.

My kitty stays out of my quilting room, even though I leave the door open. He sits there wistfully staring in, but for some reason, will never come in (thankfully). I think he doesn't like the feel of tile under his feet, maybe.

My sister had a pug that would eat anything. They ended up taking him to the vet for emergency surgery on multiple occasions because of things that he had eaten -- he had a special fondness for coins. They had to super-pug-proof their house, but he still managed to find stuff to eat sometimes.

Glad you caught the needle before it was swallowed. My brother lost a kitten because it had swallowed a button. What is it with our furry friends. They will eat anything.

My schnauzer as a puppy ate everything... he DID chew on a thread and got a needle in his mouth and swallowed the freaking thing. I had no idea that it had happened until he got really sick.

X ray showed the needle stuck across his colon about two inches from finding its way out. $800.00 later he came home after major surgery. Most expensive baby quilt in the world!

I have a couple of funny "eating strange object stories." First off, my bichon has a strange desire to eat crayons. My daughter left her crayons sitting out adn the dog found them. i didn't realize this. I'm sure most of you have seen crayons that have been melted together into one large multicolored crayon, well that is what I thought I found in my yard this summer when I was mowing! :lol: Yep, came out looking a lot like it went in! :oops:

About a year ago, I put some barrettes in my almost four year olds hair. They were the little metal barrettes that click shut, this pair happened to be green and guitar shaped. Yep, again, she was playing with it at daycare and swallowed the stupid thing. Luckily we have a great pediatrician who informed me that her father was a doctor in the prison system and you would be amazed at what the body can pass safely through the digestive system! Including straight edge razor blades.

Still glad that Kitty didn't eat the needle, the stress of waiting is never fun!

Our little furry creatures are truly loved and I hate to see them harmed. Funny, they each have their own personalities....and she is just a curious, devilish little thing. I will just need to be more careful.
