I won the AQS Ford Focus at Grand Rapids, MI, quilt show
 

I attended the 2012 American Quilting Society Quilt Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan with friends on Thursday to view the amazing, beautiful quilts and I was not disappointed. Creative, inspiring and a fun filled day of shopping and fellowship with other quilters who understand my obsession as normal:) I filled out one slip for the car give-away and put it in the box. On Saturday at 2pm, President of AQS, Meredith Schroeder, drew my slip out of a trunk full of entries. She called me to tell me I had won the car and I was so surprised I asked her, " Is this for real, how do I know it's not a scam." Well what a thing to say but they e-mailed me a picture of her drawing my name. I picked up the AQS Ford Focus 30 minutes before the closing of the show. It was real and Meredith is a wonderfully sweet lady. Look for a picture on the AQS website of Meredith handing me the keys to the AQS Ford Focus. Or come up to me and say hello if you see the AQS Ford Focus at a quilt shop near you. It is the first time I have won anything big. I am here to tell you keep filling out those slips because next time it could be you!

Did they tell you when you have to pay the taxes or how much they are? or were they paid for you? Also, how is this listed with the IRS? There have years when I didn't think I had the money to pay IRS the additional taxes for declaring an additional $20,000 income so I never enter the drawings. Maybe I'm wrong and the car comes totally tax free. Please let us know. For your sake I hope it has no taxes whatsoever.

Yes, you do have to declare it on your taxes but if you need or wanted a new car then it is so worth it! I would have put my name in for it as well :)

not that the car alone isn't enoough, but check the trunk - maybe it's full of fabric (wouldn't that be a hoot?)

Congrats on winning. Dont let the tax issue bother you. If it is an issue, you could always sell the car to pay the taxes and still have money left over.

I was there and put in a ticket, but I never win anything I enter. LOL

I won a $30k vehicle once (I sold it back) and while the taxes were disappointing (about 20%) I was able to get on a payment plan with the IRS (I had to use all money immediately due to life getting in the way) ... free anything is great! Congrats, you will definitely be driving a unique and very cute vehicle!

Congratulations! I agree that they surely made it known that whoever won would be paying the taxes but that sure wouldn't stop me (or most people, I'm sure). I'd probably sell my present car to pay the taxes on the new one!! Good for you!

Congratulations!!! That is soooo amazing. I won a basket full of fabrics and quilting notions at the last Long Island Shop Hop and I was on top of the world. If I won the car I would be in the stratosphere. Enjoy it, drive it, have fun with it! If you start thinking about taxes remember Scarlet O'Hara from Gone With the Wind and her famous saying:"I'll think about it tomorrow".

WOW ... that is just great!!! I would have LOVED to go to this quilt show (about 130 mi. away from me) .... but, last week, I was car shopping!!! Ruined my car by going thru some water in the road and had to *find* a different car rather quickly.

How neat it is, you won a new car .... enjoy the ride :)

Congratulations - unfortunately my first thought was 'did she have to pay taxes when she picked it up too' but, taxes over a new car are minimal to the winning.

My name was in the box to along with my 3 friends......................now you have new wheels to go to the quilt shops................have fun. And wasn't it a great show? It reminded me of the old days at Novi, lots of vendors. Now I have to do wool items...................sheeh..............I am a distaster..................calla..............
