If I Didn't Have A Dog... Or Cat...

If I Didn't Have A Dog... Or Cat...

I could walk barefoot around the yard in safety.

My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.

All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would b
e hair-free.

When the doorbell rings, my home wouldn't sound l
ike a kennel.

When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through all the fuzzy bodies who beat me there.

I could sit on the couch and my bed any way I wanted, without having to take into consideration how much space several fur bodies need to get comfortable.

I would have enough money, and no guilt, to go on a real vacation.

I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grandkids through college.

The most used words in my vocabulary would not be:
"out," "sit,""down", "come," "no," "stay,"
And "leave it ALONE.

My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates and makeshift barriers.

I would not talk 'baby talk'. 'Eat your din din'. 'Yummy Yummy for thetummy'...

My house would not look like a day care center, with toys
everywhere.

My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extraleash.

I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, O-U-T, G-O, R-I-D-E, S-U-P-P-E-R, and C-O-O-K-I-E.

I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.

I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much.

I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading them as 'mud' season.

I would not have to answer the question: 'Why do you have so many animals?' from people who will never know the joy of being loved unconditionallyby the closest thing to an angel they will ever encounter.
How EMPTY my life would be!!!

I'm sorry this looks so funky. I keep trying to fix it but to no avail. Sorry!!!

Awww, between my mom and myself, we have 4 dogs and 3 cats. Meow....Woof.....

nygal 07-12-2012 01:43 PM

That is so true all of it!! We have a lab mix and she is 10 yrs. old and we love her but she sheds on a second by second basis. My husband says he has to "shave the bottom of his SOCKS" before he puts his shoes on. lol I swiffer a LOT.

javin22 07-12-2012 01:47 PM

Amen! Got to love the fur babies. :D

Ccorazone 07-12-2012 01:53 PM

You also have make sure you neighbor does not take the same vacation days as you so they can feed and water your animals.

barri1 07-12-2012 01:56 PM

I agree.. I'm blessed with a dog that doesn't shed.. but you will always find at least one poop bag in the wash, as I keep forgetting to take the unused ones out.. It's funny when people ask why I have a bag in my pocket..

Sunnye 07-12-2012 02:06 PM

How true. And YOU are an angel to all your "babies"!

erstan947 07-12-2012 02:47 PM

We have 4 dogs and a cat. My DH said one day, "we have too many". My response was "which one do you want to get rid of?". I'm still waiting for an answer:)

CraftyCricket 07-12-2012 03:03 PM

Life would be so boring with out our furbabies. I have two cats and a yellow lab, they are definalitly the sunshine in my life. Except during the MUD season.

chips88 07-12-2012 03:19 PM

oh dont forget when the telephone rings they run to the phone as if it was for them. so cute..

GrandmaPeggy 07-12-2012 08:15 PM

I didn't know there was a "mud" season. Since it is flooding in the Houston area, our fur-baby is delaying potty trips. She had to wade in elbow deep water this morning when she went to her usual spot, but thankfully, it finally stopped raining for now. I'll have to thoroughly clean our covered patio (a/k/a "alternate potty").....later..... not looking forward to that chore. She liked it better because it was dry.

luvTooQuilt 07-12-2012 09:36 PM

Dog and cat owner here !!!

sandy l 07-13-2012 03:24 AM

I'm thinking of putting a label on all my quilts that say.........."Quilted with cat hair and love":D

JoyjoyMarie 07-13-2012 03:40 AM

We lost both our cats this spring. One had been ill for an extended time; the other just lost her 9th life on the road in front of our house. We haven't replaced them with a new family- it has been such a relief not to be worrying all the time (and paying the vet) for the older one, but my oh my how empty the house seems with just me and DH. We'll see how long we last. :)

I am always pulling poop bags out of the washer. lol Thanks for reminding me I need to add poop bags to my list of things to take tomorrow when I leave for Atlanta.

I have 5 dogs and 1 cat!!! I love my fur kids.. They are better behaved then my kids were when they were growing up. My babies understand what the word "NO" means, I don't think my kids (ages 40 & 39) ever understood the word or maybe no meant "yes" in their teenage mind!!! LOL

Grandma Peg 07-13-2012 06:03 AM

Animals are so special. Keep telling our black lab that it is a good thing he loved because his shedding really does get to me. He's brushed often and I sweep every day (we have laminate floors lol) but there still is always hair. But he makes us so happy with his personality.

lillybeck 07-13-2012 06:48 AM

I have 2 dogs that are part chiuaua and 1 full blooded one. They shed so much that I think I could make a new dog every day. I used to have cocker spaniels and they never shed this bad. I wil keep them all even with the carpet that of course I put in before I had the dogs.

BuzzinBumble 07-13-2012 06:59 AM

Rebecca this is great and I'll be sending it to a few friends!
You described our homelife in a nutshell! We have 3 and often 4 doggies (I mean Angels) here!

Shayvian 07-13-2012 07:04 AM

I'm only allowed one furbaby (cat) where I live, and I give him credit for my sanity. He doesn't even charge by the hour!

moonwork42029 07-13-2012 07:07 AM

If I didn't have cats I'd be missing out on so many unexpected laughs through the evening hours.

Kitsie 07-13-2012 08:23 AM

Hear, hear!!

honeybea 07-13-2012 09:29 AM

How true ! I have 8 cats and know the feeling when you tell people the number. 7 are strays or adopted from a shelter.....LOVE THEM ALL.

Stitchit123 07-13-2012 11:19 AM

3 small dogs 2 big cats and they are worth there wgts 100 times over in gold.--3 of my fur babies are labeled 'rescues' but I believe that they rescued me

Latrinka 07-13-2012 07:35 PM

Awe, how sweet, I want a cat so bad, but no pets allowed where I'm living!

ctipton 07-13-2012 07:46 PM

hey Ccorazone you cat resembles my millie(who passed away) we had her for 17 years. Every time I acquire a new four legged child Hubby says they have won the lottery.:D

sew_Tracy 07-13-2012 07:49 PM

Every day I sweep enough hair to have a new pet :)

sew_Tracy 07-13-2012 07:49 PM

5 cats and 4 dogs ( 3 cats are house guests)

PumpkinSundae 07-14-2012 04:51 AM

Love it. I have two cats and I get a kick out of the fact that everything I do I am always being watched. Thanks for this.

Greenheron 07-14-2012 08:21 AM

Oh, the baby gates! I thought I was the only one. We've four dogs and four birds. Get the family home for Thanksgiving and there are nine pairs of eyes patiently watching every bite. Blessedly the sons' two GSDs, rottie, doberman and shep-mix have all been taught good manners.

BTW, you might add one more item to the list: Wearing/buying clothing in a color that matches your pet's hair.

Ours, too, Rebecca. We lost one dog (at age 17) at the beginning of November last year, and before the month was out, we couldn't stand how sad the remaining dog seemed without his buddy, and we were afraid to leave him alone in the house. Finally went to a shelter and brought home a young one just before Thanksgiving. She's a bit too rambunctious for our older guy, but at least he doesn't seem to mind at all when we leave them for a few hours now and then. The two of them snuggle together, especially during the cooler months. They are in complete agreement that going out in the rain is extremely dangerous, unless there is a person with a leash in attendance.

The cats are sweet and very little bother now, but as they get older, we have to brace ourselves for the fact that things will tend to get difficult and increasingly expensive.

Can't imagine life without pets. Actually, I can, as you did, but they are worth every inconvenience.

jeaninmaine 07-14-2012 09:58 AM

3 cats in their teens, a 3 yr old dog, 12 (3wk old) chicks; the chicks are a first for us. We moved out of town last year, now I have a sewing room, just planted my first flower gardens, dh has his first veggie garden and we just got the chicks two weeks ago, dh is building a coop for them. We're in Heaven!

leighway 07-14-2012 05:32 PM

5 dogs, 2 cats and ALL the points in the post. I wouldn't know what to do without my black shirts growing dog hair.

purplefiend 07-14-2012 05:52 PM

I have 4 dogs and 2 of them shed constantly. It would be nice to have a fur free house. If you can go barefoot in the yard,
you don't have fire ants or dogs. lol

I hear ya! My Leo is Lab/Basset Hound & you wouldn't think he'd shed but sometimes he looks like a dandelion! We brush him daily but he still sheds like CRAZY! But I wouldn't take a million dollars for him... I've just learned to like dog hair... LOL!

That reminds me of that sign "Missing: Husband & dog -- reward for dog"... LOL! Your DH should be glad you didn't say "Well, then maybe you'll enjoy staying in the garage since it's kinda crowded in here for you"... LOL! They're like your kids... like you said, try to pick one!

I had forgotten that! When the answering machine picks up (I'm not as speedy as I need to be when I have a 60 pound dog on my lap & the phone rings... LOL!), Leo listens intently, like he's expecting a message... LOL!

We went thru that last fall when our Yankee's seizure sjust became uncontrollable & he had to be put to sleep. It had been such worry (& expense) & we said we'd wait till summer to get another dog. Oh, the house was sooooo lonely! I was miserable! Then Leo came along in December & I dunno... I kind of felt like Yankee put him in my path. Does that sound crazy? I'm terribly, terribly for your loss. You'll know when the time is right.

I've had cockers, too & they NEVER shed. You'd think they would but nope...

Every time DH brushed Leo, he says "I think I'll just save a little bit more of this & then make a Franken-dog"... LOL! But, c'mon... you know we wouldn't trade them for all the money (or fabric!) in the world. They sure are cheaper than therapy! Besides, shrinks won't cuddle with you... LOL!
