And not a day too soon... the costume was required tomorrow, with dress rehearsals on Wednesday and Thursday, and the performances are Friday and Saturday.

My daughter is playing the role of Ursula in her school musical, and this costume was a real trip to make! Her teacher picked up the black dress at a secondhand store, all I had to do was shorten it and add the sequins.

The tentacles are made of a 12" x 48" section of chicken wire (from the floral section of JoAnns), covered with thin batting to hide the lumps and bumps, then covered with fabric. There's about a foot of cardboard near her waist to make them stick out. They were sewn on to a belt that was made of a piece of heavy vinyl fabric, folded over on itself several times and covered with velveteen. She's got "suspenders" to help hold this all up, that is one running length of elasticized sequin trim, running up and across and over and under and... well, pretty much everywhere.

DD helped to sew the batting onto the forms, and to sew some sequins onto the tentacles. (Doesn't every teen spend Sunday evenings attaching suction cups to their tentacles?)

The thud you are about to hear is me falling into bed. This was a rather exhausting assignment!

I bet you are one happy Mom. You finished early. One year we SEWED kids into Nutcracker costumes on opening night. Nothing like those last minute rushes to make you glad you can live on caffeine.

Thanks! It's not a wall unit, though, it's built into the wall. On the other side of the wall is the cellar stairs, and the shelves you see notch out into the stairway, but above head-height, so it's making use of otherwise useless space. Our house was built in 1987, so the glass-door cabinetry is in keeping with what would actually have been in a house of that period... I think. We had a custom cabinet-maker construct these, when we re-did our kitchen about 15 years ago.

I must say that the white woodwork is harder to keep clean (duh!) especially by the sink.

Wait'll you see the makeup, too! And hair! (I don't do makeup or hair...)

One of the other Moms is going to take care of that. Her hair will be white, as will her foundation. On top of that goes a wash of green eyeshadow on her forehead and nose. Blue eyeshadow that extends over her natural eyebrows, and hugely arched eyebrows penciled onto her forehead. Plus a black mole on her cheek. Her hair will be sprayed white, and will be "spiked up" with pipe cleaners to make it stick out all over. Very, very creepy!

Now this part makes me sad. DD's school was one of four chosen to premier this show, the first "runs" of a Disney Broadway Junior production. Disney is sending a professional to videotape the show (presumably so that they can review the performance and "tweak it"). We are not allowed to take anything other than still shots ourselves... and I'm told that Disney will not be selling copies of the video to us parents.

I really would have a liked a "movie" memory of this! It's DD's last year (8th grade) in her middle school, she is my youngest, and these teachers she's been worked with have been wonderful, supportive, encouraging... and I've watched the kids grow up together these last three years. I understand Disney's copyright concerns, but I would *really* have liked to have had this memory captured in sound and motion.
