Kids PillowBed

I made this for my grand daughter, and am making them for my grandsons for Christmas!
http://i50.tinypic.com/2wqshac.jpg

It's this simple... 2 1/5 yards of 60 inch fabric, and four standard pillows. I used Jersey Knit, fold your selvages under and sew them down.
http://i48.tinypic.com/23mueec.jpg

Lay down inside out, folded over as a pillow sham is folded. But, just so a standard pillow will lay end to end across the folded fabric. Sew the ends closed.
http://i48.tinypic.com/2ziynic.jpg

Turn the long giant sham right side out. Lay out flat and nice, mark across at 21 inch intervals down to make your pillow cases for each one. It's 3 seams for four pillows. Sew on these marks across the right side of the fabric.

That's it! Slip your Standard pillows in and it's done.

They fold easy and can be tied with a ribbon to store or gift.

cute idea thanks for sharing with us

Martha Stewart does something similar... but differently. It's picture 5 in this list of 19 outdoor ideas. You could do the same thing with the kid fabric and use it on the floor.

Thank you. It's sort of like I figured but it always nice to know how someone else does it. It's such a great idea for kids. Can't wait to make some.

kensington 07-26-2012 05:00 PM

I made another. It took me about an hour. I am making them for my grandkids, two girls, 6 boys. I am putting the pillows in the ones who live here, and shipping just the sham and a gift certificate for the pillows to the kids who live away. 3 in DC.

My husband came up with a great idea today when I showed him to blue one. He said I should make a way to attach them together (like ribbon ties or something) so they can become a BIG bed on the floor for when the 3 stay all night. I'm thinking about that! Smart man!

SewExtremeSeams 07-26-2012 09:40 PM

They might even be nice to use in a motorhome on the beds!

Love the blue one.

Thank you, it's Dalmations and Firetrucks. I was thinking about you tonight. LOL. I was posting a teaching on a Christian women's forum and I used "KWIM?" and my mind went right to you.

GREAT idea! .....but, DUH!, I'm confused (doesn't take much!) Saw how you did the envelope type back but when they are folded up I'm not seeing any pillows peeking out. What part did I miss (???????) before I start one and then find out I screwed up!

Happy Linda 07-27-2012 06:39 AM

Very cute and creative.

kensington 07-27-2012 09:55 AM

Wonnie, the pic where you see the pillow, that gap closes right up and when you accordian fold them, it's inside. I had pulled that gap open so you could see the pillow before I closed it. HTH.

Latrinka 07-27-2012 11:01 AM

Awe, what a neat idea!

Jingle 07-27-2012 01:01 PM

That is a wonderful idea. I will show my Daughter, she may want to make some for their camper.

kensington 07-27-2012 02:54 PM

My 20 year old came in this afternoon, and saw these. He ask for one for Christmas. That would take 5 pillows. LOL.

mooretll 07-28-2012 01:24 AM

Thank you - Thank you -Thank you for this tutorial. I have all the pillows bought. I had bookmarked a tutorial on a blog to follow and when I went back to get it she had changed it and was now charging for her pattern. I appreciate you sharing so much. I want to do these for my grandkids.

Cuddly Quilter 08-01-2012 04:09 AM

What a very clever idea - hoping i will remember this when my grandchildren come some day.

kensington 08-08-2012 09:51 AM

ppquilter 09-06-2012 01:36 PM

Love this idea! Thanks for the tute!

owlvamp 09-06-2012 05:53 PM

I love this idea as well. Where do you find 60 inch fabric? I don't understand this part. I bought 2 yards to this. I believe it's 44 to 45 inches wide x 72 inches long. Will this work?

6swolcott 11-16-2012 04:51 AM

my two year old granddaughter is always lining up pillows on my floor will have to make her one thanks for the great idea

DOTTYMO 11-17-2012 12:42 AM

I know I'm thick. Can you take each pillow out separately to wash etc.? I love the idea and must make one for me. Age over 60. Wish I had one this moment as after op problem sitting.

This is genius......gotta make several.

Patty55 12-23-2012 04:36 PM

That's great and fast to do! Thanks! I added ties to mine so it's easy to stack and store.

kensington 01-13-2013 05:15 PM

Owl.. yes you really need 60 inch fabric, I use Jersey knit or else you will have to double the fabric. Yes, you can slip the pillows out for easy washing because the back is as a pillow sham. SHADOWIRISH... you did very good on yours! I use a ribbon to tie mine, but you could add ties. Also, Dh suggested that I add ties to mine so I can tie them together so it can make one BIG pillow bed on the floor when the grandkids stay all night. Fun Idea, I may try that. I did get four of them made for Christmas, but made four I Spy quilts too. Everyone loved their gifts from Nana! Thinking about making a couple more pillow beds to have here on hand.

kensington 01-13-2013 05:17 PM

PS, I got a message this was moved from Tutorials to General Chat, not sure why since it is a Tut... but whatever.

kensington 01-13-2013 05:24 PM

OH MY GOODNESS... I just had a BRAINIAC ATTACK! Travel beds... you know when you travel, take the sham only with you and use the extra pillows on the beds or get more from the desk to fill your Pillow Bed for the kids to sleep on! When we were younger and traveled with the kids on leave, at least two always had to sleep on the floor. If I had these back then... NO ONE would every had to camp on the floor of a motel room. They give you 4 pillows per bed and sometimes extras too! Sheesh! Well, there you know!
