so I have seen this that you can use in your iron that you can buy and they are pricey but I just found this recipe
2 cups distilled water
2 ounces vodka
20 drops lavender essential oil

and it makes me think can you use other essential oils? Does anyone know?

Dorothy of Kansas 03-16-2010 02:56 PM

Yes, you can, but you still need the vodka, as oil and water don't mix, but the vodka helps to suspend the oil in the water. Be sure to shake it up be for putting it in your iron. I use essential oils and a cheap vodka!! lol

mom-6 03-16-2010 02:57 PM

Not very knowledgable on essential oils, but I do know that different ones have different uses, so I would hesitate to substitute without further research.

jljack 03-16-2010 03:00 PM

Can you use this in a spray bottle, like the expensive spray?

farnsworth 03-16-2010 03:18 PM

I don't see why not if you can use it in your iron on your fabrics

chris_quilts 03-16-2010 03:32 PM

What do you use it for? Please tell me and thanks.

Deb watkins 03-16-2010 03:39 PM

Vodka for ironing you fabric?? Forget that, freeze the water, put the cubes in a glass and pour the vodka over that! Use the vinegar and water to clean the coffee pot!!

Maride 03-16-2010 03:40 PM

I use it for all my ironing. Not long ago DH used the bathroom in my sewing room and asked why do I keep vodka in the bathroom. I wonder what was he thinking.

HAHAHA!!!! Love it!!

LucyInTheSky 03-16-2010 07:11 PM

I'm confused, what is this used for?

jljack 03-16-2010 07:53 PM

Spray for ironing. There is a very expensive ($6-$8 per bottle) ironing spray that is lavender scented you can buy only at quilt shops, fabric stores, online, etc. I guess this is supposed to be the generic of that.

Oh, ok, the best press stuff? Is that all it is? I assumed there was starch or sumthin' in it

amandasgramma 03-16-2010 08:39 PM

I was just wondering today if there was a cheaper way to get that stuff!!! I've never bought essential oils before....where would I find it???

amma 03-16-2010 10:33 PM

I think Michaels carries it :D:D:D

Gramof6 03-16-2010 10:58 PM

Make sure it is essential oils and not just scented fragrance. One thing about the Lavender is that it will not stain where not all essential oils are the same color so some "might" discolor fabric. Just test first to be safe if you do use something other than Lavender.

Deecee 03-17-2010 12:01 AM

You only need a drop or two of a pure essential oil. Fragrance oils have already been diluted with a carrier oil - usually a sunflower oil or vegetable oil depending on how cheap the product is.

Not only does it fragrance your linen, lavender is a natural insect repellent - handy in the linen press.

The expensive lavender waters are made from hydrosol - a by-product of the distillation process. It isn't necessary to add alcohol to this type of lavender water.

Guess what - I work on a lavender farm!

He was probably thinking he should be using your bathroom more often. And if you think he believed you think again. Mine would roll his eyes big time and give me a.. yeah ok.. uh huh.. sure.. wink wink..
Too funny and I go with the ice cubes myself. Who needs good smelling linens anyways? And after a glass or two they all smell just fine when you flop over and pass out.

Been there....done that.....

Bobbinwinder 03-18-2010 09:01 AM

Ooooh..."cheap" Vodka? Around my house we buy the "cheapest"...and we don't mix it with lavendar oil! lol

nuttyhurricane 03-18-2010 09:10 AM

I do make lavendar water this way. It makes the fabric smell so nice. I purchased a small cheap spray bottle from walmart. I shake mine often to keep it well mixed.

AnnaK 03-18-2010 03:24 PM

I found some lavender spray at the dollar store. It's called l'essence de Provence but at that price it really comes from Hope Rose, Inc. in Spartanburg, SC. Check it out.

MollieSue 03-18-2010 04:10 PM

How cool!! The things you learn on here! :):)
I bought some lavendar linen spray from Party Lite - not cheap! But I love to spray it on my bed sheets...
Thanks for sharing this!! :) :)

Anyone who may be interested in essential oils like lavender lemon or such for this Boleks craft supply has several oils and are less expensive . They are in Dover ohio and columbus ohio also and have toll free numbers and and online ordering. I order from time to time . but do not confuse these with the bath and candle fragrances which they also sell. I use the lemon in winter and spring to releive congestion by wetting cotton balls and attatching to the air vents or a metal fan so it circulates and kills airborne germs and helps break up congestion in lungs just from breating in. Love my oils!!! Just search for Boleks crafts and it will come up.

Lostn51 03-19-2010 07:21 PM

Bad part about it is that the Vodka would never make it to the iron!!

And I cant do Cheap Vodka :(

All my Vodka goes into my wife and I usually mixed with Gin, Rum, Whiskey, Triple Sec, a splash of Sweet and Sour mix and a touch of Cola for color......Can we say "Long Island Tea"

annette 03-20-2010 02:04 PM

Hi i want to know what does this recipe do in the iron thank you in advance

redkimba 03-20-2010 02:19 PM

I would not put it into the iron due to the essential oil.

I've been using this for years and it has not damaged any of my irons. I use distilled water, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I only put about 20 drops of oil in about a 38 fl oz of water with about 1/8 cup of vodka. I use a cleaned out "Dawn" bottle, as it makes no mess when filling the iron and I write "IRON WATER" all over it, so they won't try to wash the dishes with it!!

Most health food stores carry essential oils.

Heyloz 11-16-2010 09:26 PM

I use it to press all my fabrics before I begin cutting out my quilt. It adds body to the fabric without the residue that spray starch leaves EVERYWHERE. :?

I just brought in dried lavendar from a plant in my yard. I wonder if I could make scented water using that. Any suggestions?

Thank you for the recipe. I thought it had vodka in it.

hazeljane 11-17-2010 06:28 AM

The simple answer is no. Processing lavender oil, or distilling lavender water is not a home process. However, you can make lavender eye pillows out of your buds, and they are heavenly. I sell both lavender pillow spray and lavender eye pillows that I make myself. My lavender spray also contains hydrosol (distilled lavender water, which is spendy- about $100. gallon.) But you don't need it, it just deepens the scent a bit.

Putting lavender buds in water just gets you soggy buds and dirty water- which I would not put anywhere near an iron. Lavender essential oil can be bought in any health food or natural food store. I get mine at Whole Foods. And make sure it is essential oil, not "fragrance oil" which is diluted with cheap oil. A small bottle of essential oil will last you for years, if all you are doing is making linen water with it. And as discussed earlier in the thread- a little cheap vodka or grain alcohol allows the oil to dissipate in the water.

Good luck!

check out my lavender eye pillows- really simple to make- I make them about 4X10 1/2 inches. Fill with 1 1/2 cups of flax seed, and a cup of lavender. Should only be about 1/2 full. (If they are overfilled, they do not contour to your eyes as well, more like balancing something on your nose.) They make great gifts, and I can't live without mine.

clem55 11-17-2010 08:05 AM

thanksfor that information! I'll probably use it for sachets , but the eye pillows sound good too. Again, thanks.
