someone down the street has a mulberry tree (tall) and I am wondering, how do you pick them, or do you just wait for them to fall off? The birds were certainly enjoying them.

Used to spread tarps or old sheets under the tree and shake the branches. Trees were way too big to pick. Make wonderful pies.

Ooooo, I LOVE mulberries!

Growing up we had a huge mulberry tree that overhung our house. The berries would collect in the cutters on the porch and ferment in the summer sun. Yes, the birds certainly did enjoy them! They literally got TIPSY from eating. We would gather and eat a few fresh, and mom made jelly once, but most went for the birds.

They make the most wonderful jellies. Think of them as blackberries, with a disposable core and seeds that should also be removed.
The tree we got ours from was a Persian Mulberry with a huge berry, marvelous for eating fresh or jellies. Putting down sheets of plastic and shaking the tree would do it nicely. With old sheets...well, everyone knows how permanent berry stains are, but an old one from a thrift store, washed first is the way to go.

We just picked them. Just started a batch of wine. I will let you know in a few years how it turns out.

i put a sheet under mine and give it a shake- can't let the birds and deer have them all :)

We used the sheet idea...or if you have a kid handy, send them up the tree (that was my job when I was small). Mulberry stains will come out if you squash up some unripe ones and spread it over the stain, rub it in well then either sponge off or wash as usual.

UGH....we paid to have a huge mulberry tree in my neighbors yard cut down...the birds made a mess of it and of course it always ended up in our yard..on our house, deck, sidewalks, gardens and garage..NASTY Purple bird droppings everywhere...it made it unbearable to be outside during the ripe mulberry season...When we built this house there was a Mulberry seedling on the property behind us I told the builder I wouldn't buy the property unless it was gone
