If anyone has gone through this with your dogs and can suggest something I would apreciate it..my dog developed a skin problem. Over the months it has gotten worse..it gets red, and chaffed, and has an odour to it..sometimes it bleeds and she scratches like crazy...

we have done all things under the sun...vet, allergy shots, changed food, etc etc..recently we took her to a holistic vet...she gave her Duoxo shampoo, drops, spray, and other stuff like probiotics...hasn't really helped...

Last week I was at my GP and she asked about the dog and told me about a patient of hers who had used Penatan on a horse for a skin condition..so I bought some along with some Vitamin E ointment..I have used it about 3 times..the chaffing is definitely better...
If anyone has experienced this with your pet, I would appreciate hearing from you..

Have you taken Cola to a vet dermatologist? Our vet tried everything with our little dog and when nothing worked sent us to a specialist who found the source of the problem. It wasn't as expensive as we thought it would be and a dermatologist would be exactly what your poor baby needs. Since nothing else worked it couldn't hurt and it would save you $$$ in the long run. It could even be her food. Good luck.

The first question we ask on Dogster is, "What is the dog eating?" Second, "Are you sure it's not fleas even if you haven't seen one?" One of my dogs was miserable last year and we were headed for the dermatologist when I finally saw a flea. Thick coated dogs hide them well - even the vet missed it. Moira is allegic to flea bites.

I battle it with my bassett hound as well, I have to be diligent that she gets no fleas as they make her worse. She only gets lamb and rice dogfood. The thing that helps the most is at least twice a week baths with a dandruff shampoo like selsun blue. I did use special shampoo from the vet when she was in real bad shape then he told me to use dandruff shampoos and be sure to bathe her at least twice a week. She also gets a small dose of prednisone as needed but no more than every other day when itching is severe. I sure can tell if she skipa a bath and so can shee.Good luck finding the remidy that works for your friend.

My moms shitz tzu has it bad too... The vet/groomer has instructed her to give him 25 mg of bendryl/ per day when it is really bad. Also bathe with psoriasis shampoo such as denorex or head and shoulders intensive treatment ( it is in a navy blue bottle) weekly and to give him 1 Tablespoon of linburger cheese every day.... oddly enough... the linberger cheese seems to really help and keep most of it at bay.

If fleas, Garlic. Cloves of fresh garlic, stuck in a gob of hamburger.

An old hillbilly/farm remedy was to use this one when the dog had bald spots from mange, 1/4 cup yellow sulfur (like is used for drying fruit) and 3/4 cup lard. Rub in often.

One of my Dobermans was allergic to Bermuda grass, so DH dug up the dog yard and laid down 12 inch tiles. Solved the problem.

One of my DD's Chows started digging on her skin till she had a bald, bleeding spot. We washed it well and rubbed Avon's Skin So Soft on it often. New fur came in so glossy DD had the dog clipped and put SkinSoSoft all over her, used a spray bottle and water mixed with the Avon and the dog's new coat was lovely.

Are you sure your dog isn't allergic to corn or wheat? Sometimes dogs can be allergic to the same things people are.

My little mixed breed dog had dry skin, and she scratched. I was feeding her dry dog food from the vet. Lamb, rabbit, duck and what ever she was suppose to eat. My friend suggested trying Purina Little Bites. I changed her food and in a couple of days Ty's skin was so much better. I used dog shampoo with oatmeal, does not burn her eyes. Also used tea oil (people)shampoo.

A neighbors dog has a skin condition and has to take steroids on a daily basis to keep it under control.

a veterianarian told me to add one teapoon of cooking oil in to the dog's food daily and the dry skin problem will be solved.

Don't remember what we used but we treated the entire yard & house with an insecticide to get rid of the fleas. Dog was very allergic. Took him to the vet. He got steroids and a tranquilizer which kept him calm (almost knocked out) for a few days. When he was relaxed it didn't bother him as much and when he was calm he started to feel better.
Then we started using one of the monthly ointments on the back of his neck.
