My Kentucky Trip-Some great Barn Quilts!
10 Attachment(s)
We had planned a trip north and the weatherman said rainy and cool, so headed south instead. We went to the Appalacians in Eastern Kentucky. Went along the Ohio river to historical areas and also the Daniel Boone National Forest area. One thing that stood out to me was the kind and considerate people who were so courteous and helpful! Even the young boys we ask for some directions! A good experience and one to remember. We saw lots of barn quilts and I thought I'd share a few of them. We stayed in a Bed and Breakfast which had some old quilts on the walls and some of the beds. So, take a little tour with me....

Wow! Talk about making lemonade! Not the trip you planned, but it looks and sounds like you had a great time. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing the lovely tour. I feel so relaxed now.

How Pretty......I don' know anything about barn quilts.....they are made out of fabric right do they leave them out year round in all kinds of weather? Some almost look like paintings.
My mother was from Kentucky but I have never been. Love the Lady scarecrow. Wonder what kind of animal hides are hanging? |
Jazzmyn- The quilts on the barns are made of wood and painted. There are many, many of them across the state of Kentucky. What you see hanging in the barn is tobacco!-the farmers were harvesting the crops in the fields and it has to hang to dry out. You would love going to see your mother's homeland!

thanks for sharing.... i love barn quilts

Oh so wonderful, I loved to visit my cousins in Kentucky in the summers! And seeing the tobacco in the barn does it bring back memories. Such a great place to stay, looks cozy for sure !! Thanks for sharing.

There is no place like Kentucky! I have lived here all my life and have traveled different places, but there is no place like it. Glad you enjoyed your trip and I hope you come back and see other parts of KY.
|
Love the photos. I don't have a barn but I hope to hang one someday on our big wooden shed.
|
Gorgeous pictures, I have been through Kentucky several times - on the interstate, didn't get to see much. The Hills are a lot like here. I really like the Scarecrow Lady.

Lucky you!!
My husband and I took a day trip yesterday ... a drive through the country. We headed south west out to Peoria IL (from the Joliet area). We didn't take the interstate ... just country highways. On the way back I commented to my husband that I was disappointed that I didn't see a single barn quilt. Lots of barns ... no barn quilts. |
That tobacco hanging out of the barn sure takes me back, you were in my home area, it is very beautiful country! I sure wish I could go home more often.
|
I have lived in a lot of states and Germany, but Kentucky has always been my HOME, even when I wasn't living here. Every state has it's own beauty, but KY is special to those of us who were born and raised here. There is actually a Barn Quilt Trail. A lot of the county extension offices get the wooden "quilts" painted and the local electric companies go out and hang them. There are a lot of them all around and some are quite intricate. You got some beautiful pictures and I'm glad you had a good time.
As for the tobacco drying in the barn, it's a lot of work! I always like to smell the tobacco curing and never minded working with it. |
Love seeing fall in Kentucky. Whenever I visit my brother and sister in Kentucky it is such a blessing to see the beauty that abounds in Kentucky. Love the barns, the barn quilts, the Inn looked very relaxing. There is no place like home, there is no place like home......
|
Wow, thanks for sharing. Your photos are just beautiful. Made my day, very rainy and windy here.
|
I love looking for these barns when we travel.
|
Tthanks for visiting Ky. I wish you would have visited Bardstown "the best small town in America". have several barn quilt blocks here also, along with a quilting guild that I'm are so proud to be a member. We have a quilt show here during the county fair.
|
I'm heading to KY next week. Hope I see some nice things like this. Glad you shared all with us.
|
Lovely photos!! Thank you for sharing.
|
thanks for sharing your barn quilt photos. My hubby and I did a couple trails in Ohio and one in Michigan. It's lots of fun. Where is the place you stayed at. It looks like it was nice.
|
I live in Kentucky! Thank you for showcasing out state. We have really gone crazy with the barn quilts with barn quilt trails throughout our gorgeous state.
Another fact about Kentucky you may not know is that it's the only state where barns are painted black due to them being used to dry tobacco. (I read that somewhere) I would love to know where the B & B is located. My husband and I love to travel and stay in them when we can. |
KyKaren,
Are there any quilt shops near Columbia, KY? I would love to visit some while up that way. My stay will be a short one for my daughters wedding, but maybe a little shopping time... |

There are several in close proximity to Columbia. Go to Google and enter Quilt Shops Columbia, KY. It will give you names of shops and a map of where they are. Good Luck!
