Does anyone have a suggestion on what is the best kitty litter to use to control oder. It is not necessarily his elimination that stinks so much as I keep it cleaned out, but the litter seems to have a horrible oder after a couple of days. I have used baking soda in it and that hasn't helped. My previous kitty wouldn't use an in door potty and always went outside. I just wonder if I notice it more. It does give me a headache. There is no other place to place his potty. Hope someone can help.

I like Tidy Cat clumping a lot!!!
Either the one with the red label or blue one- both are great and we have 5 cats!! :D
Good luck.

I love Scoop Away-multi-cat. But it sounds like I may try Tidy Cat. :) I shall leave no stone uncovered when it comes to kitty liter!

virtualbernie 11-02-2010 09:41 PM

I love Scoop Away too. Better than any kind I've used over the years.

sueisallaboutquilts 11-02-2010 09:53 PM

I should have stock in one of these companies hahaha

knlsmith 11-02-2010 10:23 PM

3 cats here. Tidy cat scoop or arm n hammer scoop. Arm n hammer seems a little better for the strong pee smell

Rainy Day 11-03-2010 12:29 AM

I always changed our cats litter every day,. and this kept the smell to a minimum. Check that the box doesn't have a leak in it, and put newspaper underneath.

carolaug 11-03-2010 01:22 AM

We have three Cats...and have tried so many types. We found we like Arm and Hammer, Super Scoop the best for multi cats. Of course we also clean out the boxes each morning. But there is no smell...easy to clean their boxes. I am not gagging...

ckcowl 11-03-2010 01:29 AM

we use tidy cat for multiple cats (even though we only have one, it seems to control odor better) we also have a covered littler box and the top has filters in it. i'm sure that helps too.

purrfectquilts 11-03-2010 02:48 AM

I use Arm and Hammer unscented scoopable and clean it several times a day. My cat is older and has had bladder surgery. I do notice the odor is stronger the longer she holds it .... but who can force a kitty to go? Our kitty potty is in the laundry room which one has to pass through coming in from the carport. With the Arm and Hammer we don't notice an odor. We keep the floor cleaned and wash out the litter pan every little while. Hope this helps.

littlehud 11-03-2010 03:39 AM

Tidy cat here. I buy so much of that. They must wonder at the grocery store.

CarrieAnne 11-03-2010 04:28 AM

I love Tidy Cat.........thats my first choice if I have coupon. I have 3 kittys, so sometimes it seems I am scooping twice a day!

amandasgramma 11-03-2010 04:30 AM

Two cats -- Arm and Hammer! Works great as long as one idiot cat we have would COVER his stuff!!!!

tdgiffin 11-03-2010 04:31 AM

I use Tidy Cat for Multiple Cats. Even if you just have one, it does a great job of masking odor. I also spray the linen scented Lysol in the litter box when I clean it out. I use liners so when I clean out the box, it gets EVERYTHING!

litacats 11-03-2010 04:58 AM

here in Australia we have a product called breeders choice, it is recycled news paper, and is very clean and doesn't smell, I don't like clumping litter as the cats sometimes eat it and it can kill them, quite a few of my friends have lost cats thru this type of litter

justwannaquilt 11-03-2010 05:11 AM

I have a Tidy Cat Breeze litter box system. I bought it and set it up the day we moved into this house. I love the thing and there is no smell.

renee765 11-03-2010 05:26 AM

I also use Tidy Cats for Multiple Cats. I have two Maine Coons with bladders the size of gallon jugs (only slightly exaggerating) and I've found that as long as I 'hunt for treasure' every day, it doesn't produce a noticeable odor.

nativetexan 11-03-2010 05:47 AM

i have 3 cats and use scoop away in the purple box. i get it at Target store, not Petco. it's much cheaper there.

I had also heard this about clumping litter and the dust from it is really bad for cats too. I use a product called Swheat scoop. It is made out of wheat husks so is completely natural and 100% biodegradable and safe for the cats even if they eat it, although I have never seen my cats eat the litter, every once in a while my dog goes for it. I have 5 cats and sift the boxes every other day. I do not have a problem with odor.

LOL, I have a MC too and you are right about the size of their bladder deposits. And the poops too! I keep accusing my guys of inviting their lion friends over. I too call it digging for buried treasure.

Did the newspapers first thing when I got the kitty. No leaks. I put water in the pan to test it first thing too. I have had lots of kitties in my life. BUT no kitty that has used a pan in about 6 years. I thought that they had changed the formula for litter.

Altho I he is only one cat I am using Tidy Cat for multiple cats but it is the NON-clumping type. Maybe the clumping kind would be better.

LOL I thought I was silly when I used Febreze on the kitty box.

NauDeeGal 11-03-2010 08:38 AM

We use Tidy Cats clumping for multiples. We have three cats. As long as they are sifted daily odors are kept to a minimum.

BARES 11-03-2010 08:47 AM

Thanks all. Looks like most use about the same kinds of litter. I will try some of the other ones, especially the clumping kind, and see if it helps. I scoop the poop almost as soon as he goes so if anything is smelling besides the litter, it is the pee. I notice the smell even after I have completely changed the box but not nearly as bad, which is why I think it is the litter. Then again, I have also noticed my sinuses being more stuffed up using litter. Maybe I am more sensitive now, and I am smelling it because of that.

Thanks you guys are awesome.

Maride 11-03-2010 09:13 AM

When I had my daughter's cat here I used Feline Pine. It smells just like pine shavings. I use a little bit of litter in the box and instead of scooping every day, just toss it with the liner and replace it. You couldn't even tell there was a cat in the house. She still uses it in her apartment and it smells great.

Thanks for the info. I'll go get some today. I have two inside cats and while I can't smell much, the female won't go in hers after 3 days (even if the mess removed) unless she is in dire need of it. I keep 3 large plastic dog food containers for their boxes, with big foil turkey or commercial food containers with the litter in them so I can take it out and put new ones in while sterilizing the older ones outdoors in the sun. These large 60 pound or so containers are good laid on their sides with the front elevated so the litter doesn't get kicked out. (They are rotated outside for sun sterilizing). The male always stands and sprays, which nearly ruined my floor before I found out what he was doing. And yes, he is fixed, as soon as I found him as a kitten.

wildyard 11-04-2010 10:18 AM

The clumping is the only one I find controls the odor. My cats have never shown any inclination to eat it, tho the dog has. I keep a kiddie gate across the door to keep the dog out.
Just a word about the covered litter boxes; I got one and soon discovered my cat peeing on my bed and pooping on the floor. Took me forever to make the connection, but once I did, I tried putting her in the covered box and saw that she was absolutely NOT going to go in there. Once I removed the lid, she immediately started using it again and hasn't gone on my bed one time since.

Thanks you guys are awesome.

Litter has a lot of dust to it, which could be affecting your sinuses. You might try wearing a paper mask when changing and cleaning the litter. Also, using a low dust or dust free litter might help. hugs and smiles and good luck.

kwhite 11-04-2010 10:52 AM

I am convinced that it has little to do with the litter. We had a cat that died a while back (he was 20) and he could run us out of the house in a min sometimes. He got sick and got diarreha. After months of medicines and changing vets we found out that he had irritable bowl. The vet had us change his food to Organix for sensitive stomachs. (no longer made) and he was out of quarentine in days AND his eliminations no longer smelled near as bad. (maybe 10% of what it had been for years) Now with our new cats we feed only higer quality foods like Organix and they too do not have near the smell of some cats. These two can eat anything where Boo couldn't eat anything. So try to change the diet to see if that make a diffrence.

Maggiemay 11-04-2010 11:00 AM

I use Arm & Hammer scoop

lab fairy 11-04-2010 07:27 PM

There's a new litter out that is made from corn. I haven't tried it but it is supposed to be really good for odors. I'll see if I can find the name of it.

You might want to talk to your vet. This may not be a litter problem but a kitty problem. I have two indoor cats and one needs an enzyme additive for the food (both cats eat the same food!). Otherwise, I could box her up, send her to the military to be the new secret bio-weapon. We call her a Sassy bomb. Very hush hush. :-)

Ginger2010 11-04-2010 07:42 PM

I never had a house cat, but I had a miniature rex bunny rabbit and he was potty trained with kitty litter. I always used "First Step", I think that was the name of it. It was a blue bag, but the one I used was not the crystallized kind. My bunny never liked that crystallized stuff. And I did try a cheaper clay like brand, never work for bunny. He kept sneezing! Now my bunny is in Bunny Heaven! Past away a year ago! Miss him! He thought he was a puppy dog!

tolepainter54 11-04-2010 07:52 PM

Arm and Hammer

Quiltaddict 11-04-2010 08:10 PM

I use Pro-Pet Fresh Results which I have only found at Wal-Mart. It is made with ground corn cobs and has a pine scent. It is much lighter than clay litters but clumps just as well. It's all natural, low dust, safe, and completely biodegradable. I won't use anything else. Give it a try and I think you will like it.

That's the stuff I was thinking about. I might give this stuff a try.

fryguymoore 11-05-2010 05:16 AM

I have to agree with kwhite. I had a foster kitty who had the foulest smelling poo. Even when she went poo in the third floor litter box we could smell it on the bottom floor. There was nothing wrong with her physically. But I gave her some supplement and that helped a lot. I don't remember the name, but I got it at PetSmart. You may want to google "Smelly cat poo" or something like that.

Her poo smelled so bad that I considered adding on a "poo room" where she would have to go through a kitty door to the outside and go in a covered caged area outside! Luckily she got adopted :)

World's Best Cat Litter is made from corn
It is low on dust
NO CHEMICALS to harm you or your cat
scoops and flushes
it is expensive at first glance but it absorbs well and you don't use as much
you may save some in vet bills in the long run - less chemical exposure - less ut problems
you don't have to change out the pan as often The clumps stay toward the top of the pan
Some of the chemical cat litters can be somewhat addictive to the cat - none of the natural litters are

You may need to check the cat's diet if the pee is smelling bad - a lot of the cat food is corn based - do a little research and pay a little more for the food and you will have a healthier cat

Pam Perry 10-18-2011 06:30 PM

Fresh Step works best for our home. Smells good !

nursie76 10-18-2011 06:37 PM

Just switched to "World's Best Cat Litter" after checking in on my DD's cat while she was away. When I was cleaning the litter box, I noted no odor, and no messy litter getting on the floor and turning into cement or tracked through the house. It is kinda expensive, but is made from corn, and even with 3 cats, there is no odor.
