Needle under fingernail

Well quilting stopped this afternoon as I am finishing a petal play. Using the appi-needle through 7 layers of fabric pushing the needle and ouch under fingernail and past the bed of the nail. Just enough needle to pull it out. Tonight it is throbbing. Tomorrow I will figure a way to finish on sewing machine. Dumb me.

Ouch! That hurts!

MaryMo 06-19-2012 07:39 PM

Are you sure? I've got the shivers just thinking about your finger.

erstan947 06-19-2012 07:40 PM

I feel your pain! Well, not really but I do know that it sure does HURT! Hope for a speedy recovery.

deedum 06-19-2012 07:42 PM

oh I can just see it and feel it!!! Take care of yourself and your finger. Keep an good eye on it, don't need any infections.

earthwalker 06-19-2012 09:02 PM

Ouch! Be sure and get it looked at if it doesn't get better soon. Some months ago I was watering the garden, in a rush, no glasses on....Well, as I thrust the hose into the shrubbery a splinter went under my right thumbnail right down to the bottom. Didn't think there was anything in there so put a bandaid on and drove to visit my Mother. Hours later I ended up in the Drs. office getting my thumbnail cut out and the splintered wood removed from the nail bed. It has taken months to heal and the nail is only just growing up.

OMG! That had to hurt. Hope it gets better soon. Watch for infection.

nycquilter 06-20-2012 05:30 AM

been there, done that on the same thing--petal play. I kept right on sewing (dumb me)...but ouch! and luckily, there was no blood on the piece. Joan Shay offers a special needle to prevent this kind of injury but I've never bought one...just keep trucking along with the risk of this injury. Hope your finger feels better soon.

OUCH!!! I know that must have hurt like the devil! :( I've had paper cuts under a nail (just "talented" that way) and they were bad enough. Just can't even begin to imagine how much a needle would hurt! :(

Sewnoma 06-20-2012 05:50 AM

Eeeeeeshh!!! Just reading the title of this post made me curl my fingers up to protect them. Ow, ow, ow!! I will think healing thoughts your way - keep a watch out for infection!

mighty 06-20-2012 05:58 AM

So sorry!!!!!!

ptquilts 06-20-2012 06:02 AM

When I am hand quilting I regularly wind up with the needle under my thumb nail, but only about 1/4" at a time. Can't figure out how I am doing it.

Are you up to date on your tetanus shots? That sounds deep.

cmw0829 06-20-2012 06:06 AM

Sorry to hear you did that. Hopefully it will heal quickly. Keep an eye out for infection. Good luck finishing your project.

Tink's Mom 06-20-2012 06:52 AM

If you haven't had a tetanus shot in 2 years, you may want to get updated. You can get a really nasty infection from a needle. Hope you heal quickly...

nativetexan 06-20-2012 07:43 AM

you might want to call your Doctor about that. seriously. good luck.

jcrow 06-20-2012 08:10 AM

OMG! I am so sorry. I feel your pain!! It has to be bad!! Hope it feels better fast!

Tartan 06-20-2012 08:16 AM

Owieeee! That sounds painful! Hope you can get back to quilting soon.

mdall 06-20-2012 09:31 AM

Here was my first reaction, HOPY COW that had to hurt. Hope it heals well.

Earleen 06-20-2012 12:31 PM

I was using Joan's needle, a couple days before I broke one of those needles in half. This one also bent , like it is now curved. Those layers of material really get thick.

You better go get a tetnus shot!!!

jitkaau 06-21-2012 03:22 AM

Hope you've had your tetanus shots if you live in a rural area. It is puncture wounds like that which can be risky. Hope you recover well.

kydeb 06-21-2012 05:09 AM

Just the title of this thread made my stomach do flips! Ouch!!!

Sandra-P 06-21-2012 05:38 AM

I concur with the others. If you havent had a recent tetnaus shot you should get one. Also soaking it in hot water may help with the pain initially then you can try ice water. Sorry this happened to you. Hope it heals soon.

southernmema 06-21-2012 09:35 AM

Ditto....Watch out for infection!

Morag 06-21-2012 09:59 AM

OUCH! OUCH! Hope you don't get an infection or loose your nail:(

fayeberry 06-21-2012 11:19 AM

oh, so painful.....hurts to even read about it. Hope you feel better soon.

Earleen 06-21-2012 12:08 PM

Got the ok from Dr. today said my finger looks good, I have been using triple antibotic under my nail. It doesn't hurt much anymore. He said to keep my eye on it. Thanks everyone for your concerns.

anniesews 06-21-2012 01:59 PM

Zowie, that sounds awful. Hope it is better soon.

carolynjo 06-21-2012 03:15 PM

Ouch! Be sure to soak in epsom salts to take some of the soreness out. You may have to do this for awhile.
