I'm considering buying either a nook or a kindle. I'm leaning toward Kindle because some of my favorite authors are not available in ePub and Barnes and Noble, but only on Amazon.

I need it to be readable and have lots of books. I don't need it to do anything fancy.

I'm also leery of touchscreen, which makes the Kindle more attractive- I like a real keyboard.

What have you got and what do you like about it??

Scrapquilt 01-16-2011 08:47 AM

Our public library will download books to Nook but not Kindle. Might want to check that out if you want to use the library.

Scrapquilt 01-16-2011 08:47 AM

And by the way....I love my Kindle.

StitchinJoy 01-16-2011 08:51 AM

They all have different features. Just like sewing machines, we need to choose carefully to make sure we get the one that suits us best.

Santa got me a Kindle. I love it.

The reason I wanted it is that I love to read big books-- thick history books, gigantic biographies, and long complex novels; however, my hands are arthritic and heavy books cause me real pain. The Kindle weighs about a half pound, no matter whether it has one big thick book inside or 3500 books in it. Amazing.

Other reasons I like the Kindle:

I read outside often so the non-glare screen was a big deal for me.

I have insomnia and my doctor has cautioned that I should not be looking at any lit screens within one hour of bedtime-- no tv or computer, no IPAD with lights inside. I can read with a light coming from BEHIND me. So I turn on a bedside lamp and use my Kindle.

I like the ease of getting books from Amazon; some are even free like classic lit like Jack London novels. I wanted to read them in school but never got around to it. Now I am making time to read them. You can look on
ereader-freebies.blogspot.com to see the list of free books and how to get them.

Newspapers (LA Times, Wash Post, Wall St Journal, Boston Globe, Philly daily News and dozens more) and magazines (Newsweek, Time, Readers Digest, the Atlantic, etc.) are readily available too.

Kindle fits in my purse, no bulk, no weight. I bring it with me when I go shopping, and read while waiting in line. (I hate lines. This Kindle is good for my blood pressure too, I think. Makes waiting easier!)

I have a Kindle, but bought my daughter a Sony Touch Screen. It all depends on what books you want to buy/receive. I like independent authors, so the Kindle was a good choice for me. There are many free Kindle books, but most are not the "big name" authors. Purchasing books for an ereader by well known authors costs about the same as a hardback or paperback which can be expensive. My daughter likes a wide range of authors, including well known authors, so downloading from a library was a good choice for her. The Kindle will likely never be able to download library books. Non-copyrighted books, such as the classics, are available in a wide range of formats for free, so if you like classics, any ereader will support them. Even though I have a keyboard on the Kindle, I really liked the touchscreen of the Sony.

Good luck on your choice! An ereader is wonderful technology!

hobo2000 01-16-2011 09:10 AM

I tried both and bought the Nook as I can get more books For it with ePub. I have enjoyed it so much my family bought me an IPad for Christmas with Nook on board. I am delirious. It is the neatest thing. I am sending this via my IPad. I can lay in bed at night and watch the qUilting videos on youtube be on the board and read my favorite authors.. It is pricy but the Nook was so wonderful I gave it to my granddaughter and she loves it because she can read with the lights out and roll over and go to sleep. if you have problems with your hands , the touch screen is fantastic.

Carrie Jo 01-16-2011 09:21 AM

I have a Nook that my son bought me for christmas and I love it. I dont really know much about the kindle but I have never had any problems getting any book I have wanted to read on my nook. But which ever one you decide Iam sure you'll love it.

sjscribe 01-16-2011 09:22 AM

Hi
Both are good readers. I have a nook for the following reasons: the battery is replaceable, I can borrow books from the library, it has unlimited storage because it has a micro sD slot, and I can purchase books from many online stores - there us no restriction to just Barnes & Noble. You will enjoy whichever one you purchase.

LindaR 01-16-2011 09:22 AM

they really wouldn't be any use for me...I go thru about 4 books/week and get them on ebay, amazon, and from trading with friends. I have a friend that works at a resale shop and brings home loads of books...right now I ordered the 2011 Robyn Carr continuing Virgin River Series...just love them and they will be read by at least 3 friends when I am done.

Ditto! I love my new Kindle. Just downloaded several free books this am. My DH also gave me a cover w/a light attached so I could read into the wee hours without bothering him. It makes it a bit heavier, but I am making a quilted cover for daytime so it is easier on my hands. The more I use it, the better I like it. It takes a bit of adjustment. I still reach for the top to turn the page.

BKrenning 01-16-2011 10:15 AM

I use my smartphone for both Kindle & Nook books. Also MS Reader and Adobe formats. It is smaller than the readers so the screen size might not be the best but it's one less thing I have to carry around or find another outlet for the charger.

I understand the craze about the e-book readers but I was all ready reading e-books on my smart phone before the first Kindle hit the market so didn't really understand the fuss.

The good thing for me is that with everyone & their brother now owning a Kindle, Nook or Ipad--more & more books are available for download and I can read almost any book I want on my phone and can get the best price since it can handle so many different formats.

charwhit 01-16-2011 10:27 AM

I have a nook that I got for xmas. I did a lot of research on both and thought that the nook was the better one. Especially since I can get books from public library,it will save me lots of money on buying books

liminanc 01-16-2011 12:33 PM

I have an Ipod touch, that I have the kindle app for, have had it for 2 yrs and love it. B&N has an app but it wont download correctly for me.

Lady Shivesa 01-16-2011 01:04 PM

Well, as you an see from what most people are saying the Nook is cool if you want to be able to get library books on it.

Working at Best Buy, I get this question ALL the time.

But from what you're saying (don't like the touch screen, do like keyboard, etc), the Kindle might be a good option.

My favorite part about e-readers in general is that they are very friendly toward new authors/self-publishers. I have one writer friend (I'ma writer myself, though I haven't published any ebooks yet) who has one out on Kindle's website (check it out: Keary Taylor's 'Branded.').

Either way, I think you will definitely be satisfied. :) Both the Nook and the Kindle hold well over 1,000 books! O.o

canmitch1971 01-16-2011 01:14 PM

My husband got me a Kobo for Christmas. I took it to Jamaica with me and loved it. It is so compact and handy.

DogHouseMom 01-16-2011 01:28 PM

Have you considered listening to books as opposed to reading them? I download books to my IPOD then listen to them ... pretty much everywhere. Planes, while gardening, while sewing, cleaning house, and most important - my IPOD hooks up to a USB in my car so I listen to books while driving (and it keeps it charged at the same time). I find listening very enjoyable, I get the same experience sometimes more if the narrator is good (and they usually are), and I have the freedom of doing something else at the same time. Some libraries have a subscription to a service that you can use, mine however does not so I subscribe to Audible (which is Amazon's verbal sister).

With the Nook you can also listen to your fav music while you read., tho I haven't tried that yet. All of the features that have been mentioned that are available with the Kindle are also on the Nook. Plus Nook is now in color! I like the loan book feature. I can loan a book to my DD who also has a Nook. I don't know if Kindle has that ability.

Christine27 01-16-2011 05:49 PM

I have a Kindle and love it. I love the Text to Speech feature because I can continue my "reading" while doing other things. I've heard that Amazon is adding the ability to loan books, but I haven't learned how to do it yet.

I was going to ask the same question. What I haven't found out yet is how many audio books can you get on and iPOD. I don't really want to listen to them immediately, but maybe down the road a piece. I have a lot of books on CD's and tape. Our library sells the ones they want to get rid of for fifty cents and at the rate I am buying them I will have my own library. I love listening to books. I just cannot sit still long enough to read. I love to sew and listen to a book. I am very fortunate in that after being slammed by an 18 wheeler 1-1/2 years ago and totaling out our car, my husband and I got a 2002 Honda CR-V and it has AM/FM/Cassette/Disc for the entertainment system and I am as pleased as punch because I can pop a tape, listen to it in the house, take it out, put it in my purse, go drive somewhere and listen to it in the car, or same thing with a CD. Basically, that is all I had to say, except that it would be nice to sit out in the yard with the iPOD and listen to a book, without having to drag 50-eleven feet of extension cords, to get to my comfort zone in the yard. Have a nice day. Edie PS - we do have a USB port in the car too!!!!!!!

I have the Nook and love it. I love the fact that I can lone books, download free books, buy them and go to the library for free books too. Besides, if you have a Barnes and Noble close by at least if you have a question you can take your nook to them and they will help you with it.

hikingquilter 01-17-2011 05:24 AM

Sorry, I'm from another generation, I guess. I love REAL books. The look of them, the feel of them in my hand, the smell. I love browsing bookstores, new and used. Especially love the musty, dusty smell of used book stores. I love sharing books I've read with others, and receiving theirs. I love pencil marking passages and phrases that impress me and noting any that others may have done. I love the look of books on shelves in my home and the comfort in knowing that I have read 99% of them. They are my friends. Nope, electronics just don't cut it.

azdesertrat 01-17-2011 05:29 AM

if i am going to read I want to curl up on the couch with a real book and turn the pages,to get lost in the pages, not a device.IMHO

steelecg 01-17-2011 05:31 AM

I love my Kindle - It is much lighter than the Nook my DIL got for Christmas. I think if your are really into using all of the features of the Nook you would be happier with it, but the Kindle does what I want it to do.

peabee 01-17-2011 05:31 AM

interesting topic. keep the comments coming

SueDor 01-17-2011 05:36 AM

I don't have either, but my sil and niece have the nook so they can exchange books if they want. Just an idea
.

ssgramma 01-17-2011 05:41 AM

I have had my Kindle for almost 2 years and absolutely LOVE it!

I find lots of good free books are available and rarely pay unless it is an author that I have to have. Besides saving $$$ I have a lot more room for quilting without hundreds of books around the house.

vickimc 01-17-2011 06:14 AM

I just bought the Nook, black and white version. didnt see the need for color at this time. I love it. getting athritus in fingers and it is so light and easy to hold, and turn pages. price was good also. Now I need to make a cute quilty cover for it. LOL

arimuse 01-17-2011 06:30 AM

Ah! I love the smell of books in the morning! I love books, paper, pens and pencils - I have so many books they are stacked in most rms of the house! (horders?!?) Most are reference type books, you name a catagory I have something. Im in the process of (wand ) scanning to get rid of a lot.
I want an ereader so bad, but cant figure out what to buy. I saw on a home shopping show this AM something called nextbook - very good price:@ 180$ and does what I want (I think) - The electronics show just happened in Las Vegas so Im waiting to see what the next gen in readers will be. (way back in the Dark Ages I worked for a co that did repair/maintenence on computers etc - in the 90s - and they sent reps to this trade show every yr. They came back w/ Dragon software the yr it came out - voice recognition to operate your word doc etc, very zoomy at the time and very expensive. Dragon is still around! but much cheaper now)
I also love audio books, theyre great on long trips, pop in a book and have it read to you makes the miles fly by. My SO has to travel @ 7 hrs each way when he comes and goes from work, once a month. His car only had a cd player and my books were cassettes, so I went to audible.com (I think thats the site) and you can plug in a voice headphone set and record what you read and download it on cds, so I made him a cd of poems and started reading a book for him about a person who sailed solo around the world in the 1800s. He really likes this idea. share t

sandpat 01-17-2011 06:49 AM

I downloaded the Kindle app on my iPod touch and I'm very happy with that. I need to download the Nook app to see how it works. The touch was the better option for me as I like that it does so many more things than just a reader. I take it everywhere...love, love, love it!

bobstassi 01-17-2011 07:07 AM

I've had my Kindle DX since they came out, I love it. Just using it to read (with the on-line option off) my battery last more than a week without recharging. Lots of books on line and it will read lots of formats.

websydhan 01-17-2011 07:17 AM

My daughter bought me one of the very first Kindle, she also has one. I just love it. I think it was one of the best Christmas presents I ever got. My daughter and I are both heavy readers. She bought the larger hard drive and I got the one that came with the kindle it was big enough for me.

I would not ever part with my Kindle. When my husband was in the hospital I took my kindle with me, I spent day and night in the hospital for a week, "my husband past away". Before I left three of the nurse who took care of my husband order a Kindle and they just loved it. It is worth every penny! I don't go anywhere with out my Kindle!

Roberta 01-17-2011 07:29 AM

I got both a Kindle and a Kobo for Christmas. I took the Kobo back, hated it but love the Kindle. There is also a website that offers free books for most readers, believe it's www.noob.com. If that isn't it PM me and I'll send the link along to anyone who wants it.

I've downloaded several books from that site and they were free. Some you have to pay for but most you don't. I'm loading up my Kindle for my hip surgery next month.

I also love the smell and feel of books, and have forever. It's taken me some time to come to terms with an e-reader, but I read every day. I have plenty of books that I would never ever give up, but I also want to have books I can't afford to buy. When an out of print book I have been mooning over (PBs going for $45.!) came out in Kindle for 4.99. Something in me just said- ENOUGH! We resisted the iPod, because we're old, and it is the most amazing thing. So now, I want an eReader.

Laura22 01-17-2011 07:56 AM

I tried both readers and decided on the Kindle. Here are the reasons behind my personal choice:

1. I liked the controls on the Kindle better, they felt more intuitive to me

2. I didn't like the backlighting as I feel it causes eye strain for me. I use a book light, just like I would with a real book when I read my Kindle at night

3. I have had some less than favorable experiences with the Customer Service 800# at Barnes and Noble but have had nothing but great experiences with Amazon Customer Service.

4. I had two different friends who broke their Kindles, not the product's fault, and both were replaced with new Kindles before they even sent their broken ones back because Amazon insisted they shouldn't have a lull in their ability to use the product.

5. With Calibre (free software for converting ebooks and putting them on your reader) and an iphone, (I have access to nook books on my iphone should I choose) I have found plenty of books. However, I have yet to use this feature much as I've never had trouble finding books.

catrancher 01-17-2011 08:11 AM

I'm reading this and posting with my iPad. I have the kindle reader and the nook reader and both are free apps for iPad. The keyboard, when turned sideways, is big enough for me to type as if it is a regular keyboard. I can check my email and play scrabble, sudoku, mahjong solitaire, and kenken. It's a fully integrated entertainment system, and i LOVE IT!! Wouldn't have anything else.

husband-of-a-quilter 01-17-2011 08:35 AM

You will get almost as many opinions for this as sewing machines. The Nook and the Kindle are the same but different. I have a Nook WiFi with 3g with an eink screen. I personally like the touch screen at the bottom of the Nook rather than the keypad of the Kindle. Since I have had the Nook I read more than I ever have. There are so many WEB sites for free books it is amazing. There are a lot of books written by start up authors that just did not get a publisher. Amazing stories at that and some not so amazing. Nooks can read PDFs, Epubs and DRMEpubs so there are no conversions. But as someone stated there is a free program that will convert to the azw format but it will not convert DRM encoded epubs. The cool thing about the Nook is you get all kinds of benefits if you bring your Nook into a Barns and Nobel store. Go to Best Buy, they have both there and try them, then make your decision. They are both very good devices. My wife has the Nook Color, now that is an amazing piece of technology.

nevrn 01-17-2011 08:43 AM

I got a Kindle last year for Christmas and I dearly love it. I have over 60 books loaded into it right now that were totally free....I spent a hundred dollars on books before I found a blog that I receive every day that lists the books available on the Amazon Kindle site for free. You have to get them right away though because they are only up for free for a short time. My Kindle goes everywhere with me, and the best part is that I save all that money so I can buy more quilting supplies! If anyone wants the URL for the blog, email me privately and I will send it to you.

memephyl 01-17-2011 09:09 AM

I have the kindle. Love it. I download the free books and have been happy with I have read. My daughter gave me a gift certificate to buy some, but only bought one or two, real bargain ones. Keeping the balance for a best seller that might be something I want to read.

Minding My Ps and Qs 01-17-2011 09:12 AM

I don't have either yet, but only the Nook allows me to down-load books from my local public library. I can also get the books on my computer, but it is too heavy to take along for travel.
Sally

jolo 01-17-2011 09:13 AM

i DONT know anything about either. I need to see some. with my limited budget I probable will stick to the paperbacks .the ones that I can afford that is. lol. I also use my library for books.
