I opened the door to get something out and it smelled funny, like a motor burning up. I noticed a lot of what looks like smoke but it's white just like the frost that normally comes out-only it's coming out continuously and normally it only comes out for a few seconds after I open the door. DH is going to have a conniption. It's 11 yrs old so I guess we did get a few good years out of it but now I'll be worrying about it all night. UGH UGH UGH.

If it smells smoky or hot, I think I would unplug it for the night.

If you keep the lid/door closed, the food should be okay overnight.

Or at least check it FREQUENTLY!

Oh gosh...I'm thinking we need to unplug the refrigerator! Could be very dangerous. Good luck!

I can't tell for sure. I'm sure that smoky looking stuff isn't supposed to keep flowing out right? I can barely smell it now but it's still running. The temp is well above zero so it may have just finished a defrost cycle (I wish I knew the darn timing for those-I always panic that something is wrong with it when it's actually defrosting). I just know when dh comes home he won't be able to smell it. They've been picking corn all afternoon so his nose will be full of dust or something...

I hope it is just on a defrost cycle. If not? Buy some dry ice to help keep it frozen until you can figure out what to do :wink:

Who sells dry ice? Nothing is open-we live almost 30 minutes from any town.

Keep the door closed and Please do not leave it plugged up when you go to sleep. Dry ice is and excellence ideal but I have no clue where to purchase it. :?

Well it's not doing it now. It's running but there's no excess frost/smoke and no smell whatsoever. DH is not concerned-he can't smell it (I can't either, anymore) and says because the house is so hot that's why it's running so long and why there was so much frost. This thing is old enough that it worries me that it's past its prime. DH is in a complete state of denial so I guess I will let it die, let all the food rot, and then we'll deal with it.

Go outside for a few minutes and then come back in.

I become insensitive to some smells after I've been around/in them for a while.

My DD had this same problem with a refrigerator she bought from Sears. Looked it up online and found the manufacturer/seller KNOWS there is a problem with this brand/model. Hundreds have complained, the web site is filled with horror stories. It was a fairly simple fix done by the repair department, BUT, it could have been a major fire hazard.....and they're NOT telling their customers or recalling yet. WHY??

PLEASE google your model number and "consumer complaints" and make sure yours is not among these!
