Okay, so I went to the Yard Crawl and set up yesterday and did really good even with threat of rain( which started when we started to close up about 2pm. Throughout the day we would get some people in that would say loud enough for everyone in the vicinity to hear that , that fabric is too expensive ($10.00 per 2 yd piece from closing my quilt shop). Well I held it in long enough and I told these two ladies that were trying to put me in my place (they were the rudest) "Then go to WalMart and buy your fabric." Do not get me wrong, I have a nice quilt from 'Wally Word fabric from several years ago. I guess if I was not so tired I would have saaid something else or just let it go. The up side to this is those that quilt got some good buys that day and were calling their quilting/sewing people to let them know I was here. THANKS for letting me vent.

I think ten dollars for two yards is a great price. Some people are just never happy. Sorry they said that.

Chasing Hawk 08-15-2010 08:21 AM

My neighbor had a yard sale a couple of weeks ago. There was a Lady there, who kept commented really loud about her prices.
So I told this Lady there were a lot more yard sales going on and to get back on her broom and go to them.

Woodster 08-15-2010 08:30 AM

Some people just want to "steal" things and aren't happy unless they do. You get all kinds at yard sales - that's what makes them interesting. There are those that will pay whatever the sticker says and those that will try to get $100 items for $1.00. There is no reason for people to be rude, though. We had a lot of model staging items for sale in our last sale and had a couple of women scoffing at the pennies on the dollar prices I had them marked at. I wasn't sad to see them leave - empty handed.

We had a few rude people at our garage sale last month. That's why I can't stand having them. I would rather give items away to those who really like them or need them, then get "talked" down by these jerks. I figure, if they're nasty and get their way, they're only getting positive re-inforcement of their behaviors. Nope, I'll hold on to the item and donate it or give it away, before I sell it cheaper to them!!

maryb119 08-15-2010 09:01 AM

That is not unreasonable at all and I would have gladly paid $10 per 2 yards and thought I got a great deal. I'm so sorry they were so rude.

This!

Sounds like it went well overall, Congrats!! No worries on the outspoken, some want something for nothing, and go to YS for super cheap, only go to a few each year, nothing aginst, I could be missing all sorts of good things, but figure, have more than what I need.
Hope get all worked out w/the clearance. :)

These people are out of touch with the real world of fabric. They need to visit some fabric stores. Heck, my own mother thinks fabric over 89 cents a yard is expensive. Sometimes in her mind she still thinks 1955 prices in the 2010 year.

The other day I was in a fabric store where NOTHING was under $10.99 a yard. Beautiful fabric, but I'm having a hard time with that price myself.

So sorry about "the cheapsters". You need to get your costs covered by setting a price that's fair (and that means fair to YOU, too). Some people just don't see it that way, and you're never going to be able to please them, so best to just vent as you did, and then let it go.

It sounds like you were able to move some of your remaining inventory and that's a good thing; I'm happy for you!

wonderful!!
I do charity sales for dog rescue and I overheard the man selling at the stall next to me say to a particularly nasty customer-----I,ve ran out of freebies ,try elsewhere!!

CarrieAnne 08-15-2010 11:22 AM

Mayday, that was a great response!!!!

CoyoteQuilts 08-15-2010 01:38 PM

Boy, I will need to remember that one Mayday!

We were going to garage sales yesterday and on our last stop a gentleman picked up a coyote and moon stained glass decoration mounted on a piece of wood. Nothing spectacular, put pretty. I almost picked it up myself because of my business name is Coyote Quilts. The lady wanted 2 bucks for it and he countered with one and she agreed. Then the idiot handed her a 20 dollar bill!!!! That's when she said, 'Now you don't expect me to break that do you?' These idiots always amaze me!

I'm with you Candace !!! WOOOHOOO

Jingle 08-15-2010 04:37 PM

There are lots of people out there looking for something for nothing. So they can go around bragging about the low prices they paid for all this wonderful stuff.

HAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT !!! :D

craftybear 08-15-2010 09:14 PM

yes I agree some customers at yard sales can be very rude

lalaland 08-15-2010 10:13 PM

Always seems to be the "older" ladies that do this (and I'm fast becoming one of those gals as I type). I think they do that to try to embarrass you into lowering your prices enough so they think they are getting a bargain - prices in their day were considerably less. I remember agonizing over material at Franks Five and Dime that was 75 cents a yard vs. 50 cents.

I generally don't say something but if they keep yappin' and they get kind of loud, they deserve whatever rude comment you throw their way in return.

I would snap up fabric at $10.99 a yard, where I live, I can barely get anything under $22.00 a metre, and thats only 3" bigger than a yard!

thismomquilts 08-16-2010 01:51 AM

We were just talking about rudeness at yard sales... sad that people want something for nothing. $5.00 a yard is a good deal I think... maybe, MAYBE, they misread and thought it said $10.00 a yard? Here's hoping they aren't really miserable people - just misreaders :)

mountain deb 08-16-2010 04:25 AM

I needed to vent and thanks to all of you who listened. I do not feel so bad now that I know it is some disease (rudeness) that inflict some people. Afterward, I thought of saying "This is a BMW dealership, obviously you want the used merchandise dealership."

ckcowl 08-16-2010 10:20 AM

yup people can be very rude when shopping. i had an experience not long ago, at walmart...my cousin and i were standing in line; in front of us was a woman with about 5 or 6 items in her hand (we had 1 item) the lady being checked out had a cart and was about 1/2 way through when we walked up, right behind the lady in front of us...she was terribly rude, and caused it to take longer for the checker to do her job because she kept interupting the process...she actually told the young woman checking out that she was obviously a 'welfare rat' with nothing better to do than spend money on 'crap' and she was holding up the line...she should move aside and let (her) go ahead of her...the teller was told if she had a brain she would void that order and check (her) out...she did not have time to stand here all day...after all i am from _________. that was as far as it went, my cousin could not take anymore of this woman...he tapped her on the shoulder and said, so...you are from ____________ and arent' you special, shopping at walmart!
she became very red-faced threw her items down and stomped off...the lady being checked out and the checker both thanked him...
it always amazes me how some people think because of their address they should not have to stand in lines, should not have to pay the same price, should be bowed to...living in a tourist area we get to deal with them all.
