Another thread about cherries reminded me that this year has been the best in a long time for peaches. Most of the past few years they've been dry and mealy. But this year they're juicy and sweet. What kind of weather would cause that? Was it all the icy cold temps the mid-Atlantic states had last winter?
Any peach farmers in the crowd who would know? |

------------------------------------ Quoting from my late nurseryman DH..."Some stone fruits and lots of others need a certain amount of "cold time hours" to fully go into hibernation so they will fully develop fruit, leaves and new top growth." Whatever the heck that meant. Stone fruits are the ones with hard pits surrounded by some tasty food. |
I spent the week in Atlanta and the Georgia peaches were just wonderful. Sweet and juicy. I kept going back for more.

I believe I heard a headline here just a few weeks ago that the peach crop in Oregon was about 90% ruined. I see high produce prices this year. Danged rain sometimes.
One good thing, it does cut down on the wildfires. |
We had our Porter Peach festival this weekend . Porter is a town w/ about 480 people but we have about 3-4 thousand people here this weekend we have a parade carnival lots booths set up w/ crafts/lots food vendors. They have free peach ice cream on Sat . Porter is know all over for its Peaches . Its call the Peach Capital . They are very very good can't eat just one. Make the best pies or just can them in jars for winter 2 use many ways. They auction off peaches in ton weight 2 large business on Sat Am .

That must be it then. Prolonged cold temps in the winter make for lots of sweet, juicy stone fruit. High heating bills in the winter though, so I guess it's a trade off.

I've been told that our fruit crops over here are late. I have a friend that lives in Eastern WA, and bless her heart she meets me once or twice a year and loads my van up with fresh fruit and veggies! There is nothing available yet,so she is bringing me cull apples from the cold storage plants.
My cousins in Texas lost their garden last month due to the heat, and I can't get a darn thing to grow here because there's no sun! |
I don't like fruit I have to shave, lol Never did like the taste or texture of peaches. No jam, no pie, no cobbler.
