pi
My calculator gives the value of pi as: 3.14159365359
My calculator give the value of 22/7 (3-1/7) as: 3.14285714286 22/7 has a repeating decimal as the value and, as far as I know, pi goes on forever. Anyway - for most purposes in my life - as in drafting a pattern - 22/7 - works well enough for most calculations. 0.00126 - a bit more than one-thousandth of an inch variation will probably work well enough with 'a scant quarter inch' seam |
Ohhhh, my head hurts!!
You're so funny! Jan in VA |
The calculator value is much more accurate. 22/7 is an approximation for use with fractions. As you say, however, either one is close enough to get you scant quarter seamline.

My Granddaughter is taking college math and not getting it. I'm no good, I think the basics are plenty for the average person. I learned fractions by using them in cooking and baking, doubling recipes made them second nature to me. I do love calculators.
Spelling use to be the easiest thing for me but as I age, not so much. |

I still think that 22/7 is a good APPROXIMATION of the ratio of a circle's circumference to it's diameter.
It seems very logical to me from a metaphysical/numerological viewpoint. |
I want to see the movie that just came out.

Who cares about one-thousandth of an inch!! Quilting is supposed to be fun, not requiring a math geek. If all the seams are the same, the quilt will look fine.

Pi I would like apple please alamode!
|
As that was flying over my head, I never even had a chance to look up. ;)

I'm making 3 for Thursday. Apple, pumpkin and banana cream pie.

Wo. Someone needs to call ER for bearisgray! LOL

Just trying to say that 22/7 (3-1/7) is a close enough approximation to whatever the 'actual' value of pi is for most of my purposes.

Math was not my strong suite. I know how to use the 60 degrees on my quilting ruler to get a diamond, but don't ask me to explain it mathimatically.
