Learner747 03-10-2012 11:25 AM

annies-best 03-10-2012 11:29 AM

lovequilts722 03-10-2012 11:34 AM

I don't make them but they are so cute! I'd love to learn how. :)

Stitchnripper 03-10-2012 11:58 AM

I just got some fabric to make some - there are patterns on line but the patterns were on sale for $1.99 so I got one because it had some extra pieces, like pants and crop top. If anyone has any hints I'd appreciate them.

Stitchnripper: Do you use bias tape for the arm holes and shoulder ties?

I don't plan on it so far. I think I'm just going to turn them under and meet at underarms. That's how they showed it online. I've made a doll dress this way. I want to be able to run the ribbon through the front and back casing and draw up and adjust and tie on the shoulders.

Floralfab 03-10-2012 02:20 PM

I printed a pattern for these dresses yesterday. Go to fabshophop.com and there is a great pattern there under Make a Pretty Pillowcase dress. I'm dying to try making one.

We (a church group here) made some to send to a mission group in Poland.

I found a Simplicity pattern that uses the vintage embroidered pillowcases.

Nancy's Notions has these directions for the dresses for Africa...you can also mail them there to be sent off to Africa

I have made a couple for a mission trip. They are very simple to do. There are numerous instructions on the net.

Jingle 03-10-2012 09:06 PM

I sure wish I knew about these when my two girls were growing up. They would have had a ton of them for summer.
I saw at WalMart last Friday they carry fabric with elastic on it for sundresses. Those would be alot nicer for good wear. I didn't look at the price, Great Granddaughters could wear something like that but, Mommy likes expensive clothes for them.

Monroe 03-10-2012 11:48 PM

I've made many with my sister's church group. Using the Nancy's Notions pattern I make a wider casing in the top front and back to use 1/2" elastic instead of 1/4", so I make the armholes 1/2" longer to allow for the wider casing fold down. Some pillowcases can be too sheer so I have been using stash to make the hot dog pillowcases, then turning them into dresses. A simple pocket is very useful. I also make dresses for girls/women with larger waists or hips by using 2 larger rectangles of fabric seamed together rather than the regular width of fabric pattern. Nice sheets and curtains can also be used to to make the dresses. The dresses are fun and very easy to make. We sent them to Little Dresses for Africa. There's a similar group- Dress a Girl Around the World. Both organizations send dresses here and abroad- wherever they are needed. Google "Pillowcase Dress" and you'll find many patterns, video tutes, and lots of inspiration. Have fun!

Monroe 03-10-2012 11:49 PM

VickiW- Those dresses are beautiful!

Monroe 03-10-2012 11:51 PM

Sorry- I meant aorlflood's dresses. I wasn't careful when I scrolled up to see the pictures!

zennia 03-11-2012 02:53 AM

I have made them. I use fabrics with boarder prints on them. Very easy to do. Little Dresses for Africa, good cause.

dd 03-11-2012 03:20 AM

Little dresses for Africa also wants boys shorts from any pattern. We are doing this at the next guild meeting. I didn't like the idea of elastic in the front and back of the dress. I thought the shoulder ties should go thru the front and back casing and they could shir it on as tight as they wanted it. I like the idea of a bottom ruffle. What if the elastic stretches out? Providing they last that long.

http://www.about.com/how to sew a pillow case dress.

Sorry i tried to link it but it did not go. I had saved this to my favorites just yesterday.
They had some goo d hints on there especially if you don't have the little one there to measure.

I make dozens a month for our group at church. We do them for dressagirlaroundtheworld.org and send them out to missionaries via people hand carrying them when they travel or whenever a church is sending out a group to do some missionary work. This past summer a priest who has 5 churches in Africa asked us to send him 300 dresses and at least 100 britches ( these are made from t-shirts). The instructions for both the dresses and britches can be found on their web site. I guess this is why I don't do as much quilting as I like. They are easy to make along with being fun too!

ranbro 03-11-2012 06:37 AM

I make these. I have sent 50 to Nigeria and 50 to South America and now working on 50 more for Puerto Rico. Easy to make.

ranbro 03-11-2012 06:39 AM

Yes, I use bias tape and it works really well. I try as best I can to coordinate the colors. I also put a pocket on the little dress and use part of the bias tape as the very top of the pocket.

Mickie612 03-11-2012 10:16 AM

Our circle at church is making these for an Orphanage we support in Haiti. So far I have made about thirty and have pillow cases for about 20 more. They are adorable especially with pillowcase with embroidery on it. I do use bias tape for the armholes not knowing what kind of washing will be done, I think it will last longer. Just be careful they are habit forming.

Caswews 03-11-2012 10:27 AM

Let us know how they turn out (picture please) I was thinking of these for the grands!~

Olivia's Grammy 03-11-2012 02:43 PM

I made one for my DGD when she was 2. I wasn't crazy about it. I think they would look better on a taller child. One of the ladies in my church asked me this morning if I would make some for her girls. I don't like to sew for the public anymore, so I suggested some one else.

ishearer 03-11-2012 03:49 PM

I use a 2 1/2 inch strip instead of the bias tape. I fold in half - stitch to the wrong side (armhold section) then turn and top stitch on the right side. I think they look better than the tape. I also use the fill width if the fabric -- this allows for the growth of the child -- it may become a top if the fabric lasts!! These have been sent to Honduras in Maji Boxes.

grammyBev 03-12-2012 04:23 AM

Hi ,I made these for our church ,to be sent to dress a girl around the world . They are so easy to make from pillowcases .I also made my own pillowcases and made them into dresses .
Their website is
dressagirlaroundtheworld.com

They have patterns on there .I made my own bias and made it longer so they can adjust the length that they needed hope this helps .

Tudey 03-12-2012 06:04 AM

One weekend, our quilting group made over a hundred of them to send to Africa. We set up an "assembly line": some cutting, some assembling, some doing the bias tape on the armholes, etc. It was so much fun and for such a worthy cause!

SewMamaw 03-12-2012 06:36 AM

Here's a link - pattern is a pdf file. Quite simple. http://www.fabshophop.com/downloads/...ress_chop1.pdf

I made one for my granddaughter last summer when she was about six months old. I also made little matching bloomers to cover her diaper.

What a great idea! I have some poly/cotton fabric that I could use up.

Blue Button 03-12-2012 01:02 PM

I make them. I have 5 granddaughters that I sew for and this is a favorite. I have also sold them. I have made my own pattern and bought patterns. I did one just the other day for my 2 1/2 yr. old granddaughter and did use bias on the arm holes. I think it made it a little nicer. I also have used grograin ribbon, made the tie from the dress fabric and have also put elastic in the front and back casing then attached the ribbon on the end of the elastic then stitched the elastic down. I have used two pieces of ribbon and tied it on the shoulders and also have used 1 piece of ribbion and just tied it on one side. Any question pm me.

Rowena101 03-12-2012 06:18 PM

This sounds like a wonderful idea. This is a precious style too. I guess one only needs time. I may make a few. I sew for Linus, the Veterans & other donations my guild might ask for. I love to do these sorts of things. Sometimes the day just isn't long enough. Rowena101

I have made several of the pillowcase dresses. I bought pillowcases at Goodwill for $1 or 2. I cut off the top seam and then cut 2 strips to use for the binding.

sewlisa 03-12-2012 06:55 PM

The girls sewing club made them in January. Gotta finish a couple and get them sent out. Sadly, my girls are too big for them or I would make a bunch for them, too. They are quick to make and so cute!

KayS 03-12-2012 11:14 PM

A friend and I made several for an orphanage. They are fun and fast. You can use a pillowcase or fabric. There are several patterns (free) on line and very easy to adjust to make different sizes. Have fun making them :)
