My grandmother told me about one of my great-great grandfathers being from a place called Johnnybull England. She very specifically said that it wasn't in England.
I spelled it phonetically, but I can't find it via google search Does anyone recognize this place? |
Don't think it's a place - I've never heard of it as a placename, but John Bull is a well-known folklore character, see

Sorry, I also meant to say that there quite a few pubs called "The John Bull" or similar.

He is quite the character...much more earthy than our "Uncle Sam" :D
|
Over here, people who are honest, straightforward, and ready to stand up for their beliefs are known as "straight John Bull"
I suppose he's our version of your 'Uncle Sam'! Karen xx |
Okay. May have to pay attention when/if I do more research on that. Thank you for the info though.
