Planning first visit to NYC
 

I remember seeing a photo of a wall of vintage sewing machines used as decor in a New York shop. I do not believe it was a fabric or sewing related store. I think the machines looked like a huge wall of glass display cases, filled with beautiful old machines. Does anyone have any idea of the place I am looking for? I have printed information about touring the NY Garment district from Paula Nadelstern's website. Do you have any other suggestions for quilting related places to see during my brief visit? Thanks

The shop you are looking for is a fashion clothing shop called All Saints, they use this display in all their shops world wide. Sorry am not familiar with NYC so can't help with location but if you google it I'm sure you will find it.

The City Quilter - nice shop, steep prices but wonderful NYC related quilt fabric and other items - worth a visit. Say hello for me to Diane Rode Schneck, Judy Doenias or either of the the twins if any of them are there.

Wander around in the Garment District for a variety of shops selling trim, buttons etc.
Try Googling "fabric shops NYC" - there are several on the Lower East side and around 14th Street that have great, different fabrics that you don't find in LQSs.
Haven't lived in the City since '96 and can't remember the names or precise locations

I can't add anything to the above recommendations, I just wanted to say have fun! I went to Manhattan in 2006 with my SIL and we had a blast. New Yorkers were SOOOOOOOOOOO nice to us! Everywhere we went, they were thanking us for coming to NY, giving us directions, recommendations, and tips. We'd get off the subway, climb up to street level and look around to get our bearings, and invariably someone would stop and ask if we needed help or were lost.

We did go on a foodie tour, I can't remember the name of it, but the guide took us through the meat-packing district and into a large food market where we got to sample a lot of different foods. My favorite has to be the sea-salted chocolates - they were AMAZING.

My recommendations are already mentioned, so all I can add is have a wonderful time in the city where I was born. It's not like anyplace else. And walk, walk, walk. Most streets are numbered, avenues too, see Greenwich Village and Soho and Little Italy and Chinatown where streets have names. And you never know what you'll find in some tiny out of the way shop. Enjoy!

My daughter and I go to NY every summer to see shows on Broadway. I would definitely see a show, if you can. We also enjoy Central Park.

I'm going to bookmark it for the next time I go to NYC. I've only been to City Quilter.

I'm in NYC now, just arrived yesterday for the birth of my first grandson. I love coming here. The fashion District is were you want to go. there are 2 quilt shops. try to go to Mood. it is fashion fabric but just seeing that place is awesome.
have fun and make sure you have tons of money to eat with. very very expensive to have lunch.

You have gotten good advise. Enjoy NYC. I live out in the 'burbs now, but grew up in Brooklyn. What you are hearing is true, NYers are very friendly people. They might come across as direct and abrupt, but if I was ever in trouble, that's where I'd like to be.

Be sure to go to Chinatown to eat, and if you like flowers, go to the Bronx Botanical Gardens. When you are done - go a few blocks over to Arthur Avenue for the best Italian food this side of the Atlantic.

Thanks so much for all your information and suggestions. We will only have a few days but I want to try everything each of you has mentioned. Elise1 we have tickets for Jersey Boys and Anything Goes. Gollytwo we are going with some of our fellow travelers on a guided tour of the garment district. They will be more interested in ready to wear and I will be lingering near shops with notions and fabric. Cannyquilter, I appreciate your helping me out with the name of the store. They don't seem to be my kind of clothing store, but I will be looking for it just to see all the machines on display. Thanks to you all. Something tells me that this city will be very different from the small Texas towns I am most familiar with.

the store with the sewing machines is on Broadway in SoHo, on the east side of the street just south of Prince Street, I think. I go past it regularly but can't remember the precise cross streets. Go inside the store, too, as there are tons more machines on display there. Also, there are now far fewer fabric kinds of stores on the lower east side (LES) and 14th St. Stick to the garment district and the quilt stores.

where are you staying? Though I live in Manhattan, on the westside just south of Columbus Circle, I will be out of the city all summer.

When I lived in Boston, I used to love to travel to NYC on business. I'd take an early shuttle, then bus into Grand Central Station and then walk to wherever my meetings were and visit all kinds of wonderful places. Enjoy your visit!

Be sure to go "City Quilter's" Best Quilt store in the city and very friendly.
Guess I don't have to tell you to see Times Square, but also visit Chinatown, Soho, Little Italy as mentioned.
