I know what you mean. I bought an envelope to send 2 books to someone. The envelope costs $1.49. First class postage cost me $6.20. Spent almost $8.00 and I only charged the person $5.00 shipping. Next person got mad, wants to know why I'm charging so much shipping? Wonder when the last time they shipped something thru the USPS?

I just used one of the "game board boxes" to send some books to my DIL... I got 15 quilting books and a crib size package of batting in it. I thought that was pretty dang good in one box. It was $14.95 but that was way cheaper than if it went by just weight. I got more in this box than I could the other flat rate boxes. IMHO

I just ordered some, I want to see how much fits in it and if it would be worth it.

Just curious, why not send books media? It's so much cheaper. It does take a bit longer, but usually not as long as they say.

This is a reply to clynns, My son sells college books sometimes. We shipped the last one for under $3. Tell them at the PO that you are shipping a book/books.They have a special media rate. Cannot have any correspondence inside.

I mailed a queen size quilt to my little sister and BIL this last April-a 1st anniv gift. The box was 10x11x4 [I used a vac bag] it cost me $28.48 I actually saved money shipping USPS -vs-FedX or UPS-- I have 4 more Qn quilts and 3 Baby quilts going to Missouri and it'll be cheaper to drive from Toledo,Ohio and deliver them myself by the time I add insurance it will be at least $165. My last round trip home only cost me $110 and gas was $1.40 higher on avg So as soon as all my stuff is at the new house I'm doing a ROAD TRIP

My biggest problem is I don't know how much stuff should cost to mail. I told the guy cheapest way and he said it was only 20 cents difference between First Class and Priority. He didn't mention media mail. I went to the USPS website and tried to find info there, but it only went up to 13 ounces. Yes, I'm lost. All new to me.

Once you open up the USPS rates, click on calculate domestic postage, enter your zip codes, from and to, the size package, and the weight in the boxes underneath. Click the little red "continue", and the next page will show you all available rates. Media is at the VERY bottom. Hope this helps! I'm pretty accurate on domestic now, but international can still throw me for a bit of a loop-different rules!

If one plans to sell more than a few items, I think it's worth the expense of buying a fairly accurate scale to weight items -

Then one can check the postage rates before leaving the house.

There seem to be several electronic ones available for between $20 and $30.

Mine goes up to 4 pounds and weighs in 0.1 ounce increments - but if there are a lot of items, one can weight them separately and add.

The only time I am "not confident" is when the items are "right on the line" for weight. When it's 6.1 ounces, I just round up to
7 - but when it's EXACTLY on 7 - and I haven't put the label and tape on it yet - then I will round it up to 8 ounces.

I'm now thinking I should have kept those boxes - but the box they came in was big and bulky - and I was in cleaning mode at the time. :roll: :cry:
