Does anyone really think the oriental girl has only been sewing a couple of months? I think she will have the last laugh.

amma 08-22-2011 02:20 PM

I don't think that fact will matter, as they are judged by the finished garment(s) and not by how much experience they have. So those with little experience are judged the same as those with decades  :D:D:D

alikat110 08-22-2011 02:24 PM

Not possible. Her construction is toooooo advanced

JulieR 08-22-2011 02:30 PM

If I had a knack for knowing what looks good on the body, a goal I'm passionate about and no job, I could learn what she's done in four months.

I'm finding it hard to believe as well.

I think you missed the idea of my post as she is doing awesome. I just think she told a falsehood.

She is great and will probably win - such a natural

jrhboxers 08-22-2011 02:59 PM

My assumption on her '4 months of sewing' is that she has dedicated the 4 months prior to the try-outs for sewing only. And in doing so refined her skills. I can't believe that she is that could and had never sewed on a machine before she decided to try out for the show.

quiltsillysandi 08-22-2011 03:50 PM

I wondered about that as well.....Bottom line, it's all in what the finished garment looks like....

I'm a die-hard fan of Project Runway, but this season's contestants are really lacking in personality and quirkiness....I miss "Fearless" and Chris, and a few of the others....They made me laugh....Plus, they were really good designers....

Gosh has it been that long since I watched the show, I thought you had to have a portfolio of your work to qualify.

Monika 08-22-2011 03:52 PM

Maybe in dog months!! Oh wait is there sucha thing??

Ellen 08-22-2011 04:32 PM

If I remember right, she had no idea how to thread the machine when she sat down to use it. I have no doubt she knew how to design and construct but it could have been by hand.......a lot of those remote places are fiercly proud of their handwork.

spinnergs 08-22-2011 05:40 PM

I wondered about this one too, she really doesnt design like most of the "schooled" people. I liked the quirky girl they just dumped. Too bad.

kristen0112 08-22-2011 05:57 PM

I think she's not truthful...I also think that last week she should have been busted for getting help. I'm sure that if her look had won somebody would have cried foul.

mzmama 08-22-2011 05:58 PM

There is something about her that is amazing don't you think?

It isn't against the rules, and it isn't the first time one contestant has pitched in to help another. If she were busted you'd have to bust anyone who ever got a second opinion from another contestant, or got help dying fabric or threading a serger, or got someone's extra velcro or something. There are a lot of challenges where the models help with the last-minute details, too.

mzsooz 08-22-2011 06:38 PM

I believe her. I met a man once that broke his leg and lived in an upstairs apartment. He bought a sewing machine and taught himself to sew and made really incredible things. The leg healed and he quit sewing! When I was 11 I had only been sewing a little while and was sewing professionally for customers so it is possible to learn quickly. I think some people just have a knack for it.

auntpiggylpn 08-22-2011 08:16 PM

I think that she is playing everyone. . . She doesn't know what to do but is able to sew so perfectly. I just don't buy it! I think she is looking for glory . . . She is not one of my faves.

ChaiQuilter 08-22-2011 08:26 PM

I think she's a "ringer". Also, I would think that the judges take a constestant's ability to run a business into their final end-of-season decisions.

She got more help than just helping with opinions or sewing finishing touches... I think the other person who got help I forget who that was should also have gotten in trouble. It may not be the letter of the "law" but I think it's the spirit that if someone is getting that much help at this stage someone else is being sent home that may have had more potential (not this week because Julie's - was that her name?- clothes were just awful every time) At this stage it's supposed to weed out. If someone hadn't helped her (and the other person) her look wouldn't have been finished. Time will tell with her. I guess my problem with her is I don't think she is being truthful about the amount of skills she had prior to entering the show. And i dont think her story is straight. In the first episode she claims that just learned how to sew then in another part she stated that she had lots of people creating patterns and sewing from her designs. It's one thing to learn how to sew but it's a totally different skill to design.

BETTY62 08-22-2011 10:05 PM

I have not watched any of the the shows this season but I will in the future!

ywoodruff5 08-23-2011 03:59 AM

I, too, was shocked that she could be that good so quickly......then I had to remind myself about a local 16 year old girl.....in one year of learning to sew she made her first quilt - an original design - which not only won numerous awards, but was featured in the newspaper and a magazine! A creative genius!!!

There is something fishy going on there. Its important for these reality "stars" to have "something" that makes them stand out...this is what she chose. I wish that she was not getting help from fellow contestants.

Also...the Asian young man who said he grew up in the USA from age 4 to 16. How is it he has such a heavy british/asian accent?

fayeberry 08-23-2011 10:08 AM

Not sure about her experience, but will say the judges this season are more catty than ever!

Meme2six 08-23-2011 10:19 AM

I'm really glad to have found this thread. I love Project Runway and did not realize a new one had started. I'll spend the next couple of days watching online so I'll be caught up.

Me too. And remember last week one of the other gals helped her finish it.

lfw045 08-23-2011 11:58 AM

What's the big deal about them helping each other......nothing wrong with it at all and it's not against the rules.

On the other hand she appears to have a natural talent for it so, yes it is possible for her to be that good that quickly.

I thought the same thing. That accent is so "affected!"

adrianlee 08-23-2011 02:59 PM

I think it's a nice story, but I don't buy she has only been sewing in such a short time, but sells the show, viewers keep coming back to see how she is doing. I don't think the program is as good this year as last year's.

JulieR 08-23-2011 03:04 PM

You know, she says she is inexperienced, and the fact that she's getting help from others seems to support that. On the other hand, as we know plenty of contestants have gotten help from others over the years, and not all of them were inexperienced tailors. Sometimes they just ran out of time to do what they wanted.

Gee, I missed that episode. Not knowing how to thread an unfamiliar machine is not a fault. At the factory where I worked machines rarely had to be threaded. Operators were careful PLUS when changing thread, the old color was snipped at the cone, the new cone placed and the two ends tied in an overhand knot and pulled through the machine from the stitching end. Some of the industrial needles were large enough to let the knot through.

I think the judges are favoring Bert!

I seem to recall on the pre-show that showed their auditions, Anya said she had been *designing* clothing for a while, but only *sewing* for 4 months prior to the audition.

That I can believe. Designing, and subsequently having people create patterns from and sew from said designs, does not equate to being able to sew. Plus, the auditions were held months before the first episode, so she had more time to work on her skills.

I can see it being possible, that she has only been doing her own manufacturing for less than a year, based on my experiences with quilting.

And no, I don't like this year's cast much either. And I'm getting a bit tired of MK. I don't understand why they keep elevating crappy designs and trashing good ones.

pjnesler 08-23-2011 04:40 PM

You all have me interested in this now - set it up on TIVO to see how it all comes out! My Nice is a designer for TARGET kid clothes, never sewed a stitch untill her Senior year in highschool - she was very artistic in drawing and crafts, also did some modeling. You never know where life may take you....

Gosh has it been that long since I watched the show, I thought you had to have a portfolio of your work to qualify.

She's just brilliant and talented. And even if she were lying (which I don't believe she is) what does it matter? She isn't getting extra points for being a novice...

She is a beauty queen and has been designing and making her own clothes for competition, so she is familiar with how clothes are constructed. I think she is fabulous.

Yes, they did all have portfolios, and on their audition interview they all showed some of their pieces. Didn't you see the first episode?

dellareya 08-23-2011 05:53 PM

I'm a big fan of Project Runway and have been for years.
I'm not always a fan of the judges and by no means are the fashions designed for the "common" women. I think we have seen more "exciting" characters in past seasons. I love, love, love watching Tim Gunn.
Project Runway is the only show I actually remember to watch.
I love when A and E does a marathon of a season with episodes back to back. I never get tired of watching them.
