well the 2 babies are too big for the mom and dad to sit on the nest so I was able to get this great picture

the story is we had a robbin make a nest in our weeping cherry tree in our front yard. After the babies left the nest a pair of morning doves took it over and layed some eggs and this is what we have so far

Nature's way of up-cycling:) Thanks for the photos.

That is interesting! All the mourning dove nests I have ever seen are almost flat and made with pretty big twigs. Their call is one of the things I miss most about the South.

thanks for sharing the pictures with all of us

nativetexan 08-12-2011 05:05 PM

they look a bit crowded in there but so cute.
the doves here make a horrid racket when landing in trees. then they do their lovely coo, coo. wonder why the noise on landings. to scare any other birds in their way out of their path?

blueangel 08-12-2011 05:24 PM

They are so cute

Too cute!! We had some by our door a couple of years ago. We really had fun watching them.

I have a pair that just built a nest in my spouting! I hope they decide to build some place else or their nest may get flooded.

Love the pics, and the descriptive words of how they sound. Can't even imagine hearing one......that would be cool to hear, but God has blessed me other ways instead of hearing............

We think of mourning doves as gentle, but I watched a pair of them bully a blue jay away from some bird seed on the ground once!! Don't mess with doves!!

Cute babies, aren't they? They look so soft and cuddly.

coachmatthewsvhs 08-13-2011 04:39 AM

thanks i love Doves. ;)

cbpirate 08-13-2011 05:23 AM

mourning doves may be from the south, but we have a good bunch of them on the south oregon coast... they will talk to you if you try.

K.P. 08-13-2011 05:25 AM

Doves are really lazy creatures and usually don't make a nest of their own, they almost always take over a deserted/pre-used one, sometime they just lay their eggs on the ground. I grew up in the South in the country and we often found dove eggs under a stalk of cotton just laying on the ground...

Dove make the most beautiful sound. I love laying in bed in the mornings listening to them,

This is our first year to have doves at our house. I don't know how many or where their nest are.

MargeD 08-13-2011 11:12 AM

Thanks for sharing. We always had one or two dove nest on the farm where I grew up. Mom loved bird watching and had this huge cement bird bath outside her kitchen window.

Isn't this wonder entertainment that nature provides us! Thanks for sharing.

pawebdoctor 08-13-2011 02:57 PM

Great pics... thanks so much for sharing! I love baby birds!!! I didn't know they would use a nest from another bird... glad they recycle!!!

A pair built a nest in my mom's hanging plant one year. Went to water plant and watered nest. Had to let plant die. They are so peaceful looking.

jojosnana 08-13-2011 04:07 PM

I had a nest in a large wreath I had hanging at the side of the front door. We got to watch the babies go up but it scared the UPS guy and FEDX and USPS more than once. I finally put up a sign. The birds in the wreath are real, walk slowly and you will be fine. No problem after that.

I miss the sound of mourning doves, too! Never see them up here in WA, at least not in western WA. And she must have laid another egg when you weren't looking. Can't have twins with an eggshell--no room for expansion! When I used to breed zebra finches, I broke open an unhatched egg and found two little embryos side by side. I mentioned this to my biology professor, who was disappointed that I hadn't preserved the specimen, and explained why they could never have developed. They grew as big as the shell would allow, and then, nowhere to go.

Thanks for posting. Lovely birds.

strawberrycatz 08-16-2011 07:50 PM

The noise doves make on landing is caused by their wings.

purplepamela 08-19-2011 08:50 AM

Awesome. Brings back lots of memories of my youth.
