when I started kindergarten we went to a one room school house in the country. I live in Iowa. I remember putting our ears to the light pole in the yard and we thought we could hear voices (it was really the vibrations we were hearing) and we were convinced we could hear people in hell talking! LOL

I remember playing drop the hanky and freeze tag and blindman's bluff. We played alot of cat's cradle a game where you put a string on your hands and each person has to find the xs and pinch the string at those places and turn the string inside out. Then the next person does the same until someone messes up.

My parents had lots of home parties and we made alot of homemade icecream by hand crank. Everyone took a turn cranking. Tasted soooo good!!

When we would visit my granny out in Toledo, she would make us 4 kids 7-Up floats. We would sit around her little kitchen table, each had a different colored plastic cup. We thought the straws that "bent over" at the top were the most coolest things ever! And our granny let us have them. This was back in 1972. Fond fond memory....

One summer we were up visiting my grandparents in Bellingham, WA up on the Kelly Road. We (me and cousin) got to go to the store with gandpa when he went. The last thing grandma told him on the way out the door "Don't go buying those girls a bunch of candy!"
He didn't. My cousin and I came home with two of the largest rainbow hard candy suckers he could find. He brought one for my sister and my other cousin to.
Grandma was seeing red. Us girls thought it was quite funny that grandpa had put one over on grandma by pointing out he didn't buy us all a bunch of candy. :-D

I can remember when we would go and visit my grandma and grandpa in the summer...Grandpa would haul out 2 big galvanized garbage cans that he bought just for me and my sister. They always knew when we were coming and grandma would fill both of them up half way with hot water and then when we got there grandpa would finish filling them up with cold water. Then me and my sister would take all of our clothes off except for our underwear and we would play and splash and grandma and grandpa would sit and watch us play. Whenever I see a picture of the house they used to live in, that is the best memory I have of them. :) This was maybe 1968 or 69.

My family didn't have much money but we sure did have fun. On Friday or Saturday evenings my parents would get together with their friends (several couples) and the men would sit around and play bluegrass/country music. My dad played guitar, banjo, fiddle and harmonica all by ear. The women would sit around the table and gossip, drink coffee and smoke cigarettes while jumping up and down to check on us kids. Us kids? Well, we'd run in and out of the house and play hide and seek, freeze tag, etc and chase lightning bugs. I never even knew we were broke!

On school days, I walked a block to my grandmother's house (grandpa was deceased) and stayed for a couple of hours until my mother picked me up. Grandma was always sitting by the living room window with the lace curtains pulled back watching for me. She'd give me a little snack and talk about all sorts of things. One vivid memory was that we were having a thunderstorm along with hail. She held a coffee cup out the door to college some hail, showed it to me and explained how it was formed. She was very small, only 4'9" and she was just like a playmate. She passed away when I was nine, and it was a very sad day.

when i was small, my 2nd cousin taught me how to take a blade of grass and place it between my thumbs and blow to make it whistle.
and sodas were five cents!!

In the summertime, me and all the neighborhood kids would play Kick the Can out in the street. We rollerskated up and down the street on the sidewalk. One of the neighborhood women who did not have kids made a playhouse for us and used to serve snacks and sodas. No adult could do that now without being suspected of child abuse... sad...

We lived in the country and very seldom got to go to town. I can remember occasionaly when my Dad was with us, we would stop at the drugstore. We didn't get to go inside, but he would bring us a chocolate soldier. Boy, were they good. Anyone else remember them?

First cup of coffee, learning how to make root beer, learning how to make homemade wine from the grapes my grandfather grew.......There are sew many more.....thanks for the rewind....... I miss them so much......
